The Belhaven College Department of Music Presents THE BELHAVEN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC Dr. Stephen W. Sachs, Chair presents The Belhaven College & Jackson Community Symphony Orchestra A Musical Evening at the Movies Saturday, February 6, 2010 7:30 p.m. Belhaven University Center for the Arts Concert Hall BELHAVEN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC MISSION STATEMENT The Music Department seeks to produce transformational leaders in the musical arts who will have profound influence in homes, churches, private studios, educational institutions, and on the concert stage. While developing the God-bestowed musical talents of music majors, minors, and elective students, we seek to provide an integrative understanding of the musical arts from a Christian world and life view in order to equip students to influence the world of ideas. The music major degree program is designed to prepare students for graduate study while equipping them for vocational roles in performance, church music, and education. The Belhaven University Music Department exists to multiply Christian leaders who demonstrate unquestionable excellence in the musical arts and apply timeless truths in every aspect of their artistic discipline. The Music Department of Belhaven University directs you to “Arts Ablaze 2009-2010.” Read about many of the excellent performances and presentations scheduled throughout this academic year at Belhaven University by the Arts Division.     Melissa Errico is one of Broadway's most cherished leading ladies, as well as a blossoming recording artist who has been called "the voice of enchantment" by the NY TIMES. She released her second studio CD Lullabies and Wildflowers on Mothers Day 2008. This follows her debut CD Blue Like That (Capitol Records, EMI) produced by Arif Mardin, praised as "gorgeous" (NY TIMES), and "earthy and soulful" (USA TODAY). Melissa was nominated for the Best Leading Actress Tony Award for her work in Michel Legrand's Amour, and has been recognized with the Lucille Lortel Award, six Drama Desk nominations, two Helen Hayes Awards, four Outer Critics Award nominations and three Drama League Honors. In December of 2010, she received the "Artist of Distinction" Award from the Great Neck Arts Center, recognizing her as a Long Island native who has made her home town proud. Melissa starred on Broadway as Betty Haynes (the Rosemary Clooney role) in Irving Berlin's White Christmas, and then starred off-Broadway in the Shaw play CANDIDA, for which she was nominated for a Best Actress 2010 Drama Desk Award. When only a teenager, Melissa burst upon the Broadway scene as Cosette in Les Miserables, quickly followed by a star-turn as Kitty in Anna Karenina, and then, at age 22, to raves as Eliza Doolittle in the Broadway revival of My Fair Lady. Since then, she has starred in High Society, Amour and Dracula on Broadway, and acclaimed off-Broadway plays like Major Barbara and The Importance of Being Earnest, as well as in television and film, including CBS's Central Park West and the movies Frequency and Life Or Something Like It, opposite Angelina Jolie.

Yet her equally wide influence on the world of music was largely unrecognized until 1992, when the late Carlton Lowenberg published his groundbreaking study Musicians Wrestle Everywhere: Emily Dickinson and Music (Fallen Leaf Press), an examination of Dickinson's involvement in the music of her time, and a "detailed inventory" of 1,615 musical settings of her poems. The result is a survey of an important segment of twentieth-century music. In the years since Lowenberg's inventory appeared, the number of Dickinson settings is estimated to have more than doubled, and a large number of them have been performed and recorded. One critic has described Dickinson as "the darling of modern composers."1 The intriguing question of why this should be so has been answered in many ways by composers and others.

    The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection A Handlist A wide-ranging collection of c. 4000 individual popular songs, dating from the 1920s to the 1970s and including songs from films and musicals. Originally the personal collection of the singer Rita Williams, with later additions, it includes songs in various European languages and some in Afrikaans. Rita Williams sang with the Billy Cotton Club, among other groups, and made numerous recordings in the 1940s and 1950s. The songs are arranged alphabetically by title. Written and directed by Josh Ravetch (Carrie Fisher’s Wishful Drinking), Chasing Mem’ries stars Daly as Victoria, a woman not quite ready to let go of the life she has loved and the love of her life, Academy Award-nominee Robert Forster (Jackie Brown) as her husband Franklin, and Scott Kradolfer as their son Mason. “A violinist once said she only got to play a Stradivarius a few times in her life and she knew she would never be quite as good without it. Rahman, in full Allah Rakha Rahman, original name A.S. Dileep Kumar, (born January 6, 1966, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian composer whose extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” Rahman continued his work for the screen, scoring films for Bollywood and, increasingly, Hollywood. He contributed a song to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s Inside Man (2006) and co- wrote the score for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). However, his true breakthrough to Western audiences came with Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rahman’s score, which captured the frenzied pace of life in Mumbai’s underclass, dominated the awards circuit in 2009. He collected a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for best music as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best score. He also won the Academy Award for best song for “Jai Ho,” a Latin-infused dance track that accompanied the film’s closing Bollywood-style dance number. Rahman’s streak continued at the Grammy Awards in 2010, where he collected the prize for best soundtrack and “Jai Ho” was again honoured as best song appearing on a soundtrack. Rahman’s later notable scores included those for the films 127 Hours (2010)—for which he received another Academy Award nomination—and the Hindi-language movies Rockstar (2011), Raanjhanaa (2013), Highway (2014), and Beyond the Clouds (2017).

    Martin Denny and the Sounds of Exotica This in an updated version of an article originally published in Film Score Monthly (Vol. 2, No. 4, June 1997). A look at the unique circumstances of Forbidden Island. The mysteries of the tropics await! by Kerry J. Byrnes, Okemos High Class of 1963 Some twenty years ago John Bender=s article (“First Dive...Into the Dark Pool of ‘Soundtrack Related’”) published in Film Score Monthly (FSM#69) prompted me to pick up the I, Swinger CD by the musical group Combustible Edison, especially as Bender had referred to the CD as a “knock off” of a number of musicians, including Martin Denny, one of my all-time favorites. But I was most intrigued by Bender’s statement that Denny had “even managed to get one film score under his belt.” Bender=s next sentence added the needed clarification: “Let’s hope Denny=s music for Forbidden Island isn’t as hopelessly lost as the film itself seems to be.” But Forbidden Island, as later clarified, is not lost (though not yet commercially available on DVD). Produced by C.B. Griffith in 1959, Forbidden Island was shown on cable’s TNT in August of 1992 as part of a package of films TNT licensed from Columbia, now owned by Sony (film not included in the current package of newer films Sony has licensed to TNT). Fortunately, a video of TNT’s screening of Forbidden Island was preserved by none other than the Maestro of Exotica – Martin Denny – who kindly loaned his copy so I could make a dub.
