Supervisor JOSEPH SALADINO presents 2018 - 2019 Distinguished Artists Concert Series Co-Sponsoring Libraries Bethpage • Farmingdale • Hicksville • Jericho • Locust Valley Massapequa • Plainview-Old Bethpage • Syosset A Message from Joseph Saladino Town Supervisor Dear Neighbor, The Town of Oyster Bay2018-2019 Distinguished Artists Concert series will, once again, offer a diverse season of musical programs, which will kick off in October. Whatever your musical taste, Opera, Pop, Jazz, Classical or anything in between, there is something for everyone. The concert season begins on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at the Locust Valley Library with Mambo Loco performing Old-School Latin & Latin Jazz and continues through Sunday, May 19, 2019 culminating with a performance by Just Sixties - a multi-media retrospective of the 1960’s. This season’s lineup also includes The Hambones - Country/Rockabilly, River of Dreams - a tribute to the music of Billy Joel, The Tribunes - authentic Street Corner Harmony, New Vintage Orchestra performing Swing & Jazz Hits of a Lifetime, and Sasha Papernik & Her Band - an homage to Burt Bacharach & Hal David, just to name a few. My fellow Town Board members and I are proud to provide residents with some of the very finest cultural and performing arts entertainment available. All concerts are free of charge and are held at conveniently-located local libraries throughout the Town. Melissa Errico
Melissa Errico is one of Broadway's most cherished leading ladies, as well as a blossoming recording artist who has been called "the voice of enchantment" by the NY TIMES. She released her second studio CD Lullabies and Wildflowers on Mothers Day 2008. This follows her debut CD Blue Like That (Capitol Records, EMI) produced by Arif Mardin, praised as "gorgeous" (NY TIMES), and "earthy and soulful" (USA TODAY). Melissa was nominated for the Best Leading Actress Tony Award for her work in Michel Legrand's Amour, and has been recognized with the Lucille Lortel Award, six Drama Desk nominations, two Helen Hayes Awards, four Outer Critics Award nominations and three Drama League Honors. In December of 2010, she received the "Artist of Distinction" Award from the Great Neck Arts Center, recognizing her as a Long Island native who has made her home town proud. Melissa starred on Broadway as Betty Haynes (the Rosemary Clooney role) in Irving Berlin's White Christmas, and then starred off-Broadway in the Shaw play CANDIDA, for which she was nominated for a Best Actress 2010 Drama Desk Award. When only a teenager, Melissa burst upon the Broadway scene as Cosette in Les Miserables, quickly followed by a star-turn as Kitty in Anna Karenina, and then, at age 22, to raves as Eliza Doolittle in the Broadway revival of My Fair Lady. Since then, she has starred in High Society, Amour and Dracula on Broadway, and acclaimed off-Broadway plays like Major Barbara and The Importance of Being Earnest, as well as in television and film, including CBS's Central Park West and the movies Frequency and Life Or Something Like It, opposite Angelina Jolie. -

The selection reflects National Curriculum recommendations for KS1 and KS2. This list can be accessed on the Library catalogue by entering the phrase ‘History through stories’ in the keyword search screen, where additional titles can also be found. The list is available online from the EHSC Library News & Information page on the Learning Network. You can also search the catalogue directly for individual historical stories set in particular periods by combining “history through stories” and the topic. E.g. Film scores demand an extraordinary degree of both musicianship and dramatic understanding on the part of their composers. Whilst creating potent, original music to synchronise exactly with the images, composers are also making that music as discreet, accessible and communicative as possible, so that it can speak to each and every one of us. Film music demands the highest standards of its composers, the insight to 'see' what is needed and come up with something new and original. With my series and the other content across the BBC’s Sound of Cinema season I hope that people will hear more in their movies than they ever thought possible.” Part 1: The Big Score In the first episode of a new series celebrating film music for BBC Four as part of a wider Sound of Cinema Season on the BBC, Neil Brand explores how the classic orchestral film score emerged and why it’s still going strong today. Neil begins by analysing John Barry's title music for the 1965 thriller The Ipcress File. Demonstrating how Barry incorporated the sounds of east European instruments and even a coffee grinder to capture a down at heel Cold War feel, Neil highlights how a great composer can add a whole new dimension to film. Music has been inextricably linked with cinema even since the days of the "silent era", when movie houses employed accompanists ranging from pianists to small orchestras. -
