We provide an overview of the reserve along with sighting locales, a list of 185 birds with their resident status and abundance, and a list of the available bird habitats. Photographs of habitats and some of the bird species are included. -

Brenner NIGHTJAR DISTRIBUTION AND ABUNDANCE IN EASTERN NEBRASKA NONGAME BIRD PROGRAM 3 An important step in effectively conserving species of concern is defining their distributions and habitat associations. Eastern Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferous; EWPW) and Chuck-will’s-widow (Antrostomus carolinensis; CWWI) are insectivorous birds whose breeding ranges cover much of eastern North America. Similar to other nightjars, both species are primarily active at night. EWPW and CWWI sing loudly between dusk and dark and consequently, are more often heard than seen. During the day, both species roost on or near the ground and each is cryptically-colored and are rarely detected by observers. Because of their behavior and life history, both species are infrequently and inconsistently detected by observers and by traditional avian monitoring programs such as the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS). -

ABSTRACT: Breeding biology of the White-winged Nightjar (Eleothreptus candicans) in eastern Paraguay. I present the first detailed description of the breeding biology of the White-winged Nightjar (Eleothreptus candicans), based on data collected over three breeding seasons during 1998-2001 at Aguará Ñu, Canindeyú, eastern Paraguay. Male nightjars defended small territories situated on the upper slopes of ridgelines. Each territory contained one or more “display arenas” at which the male performed nuptial display flights. Aggregation indices confirmed that the primary display arenas of males were significantly clustered within the survey area. Within their territories, males apparently selected display arenas on the basis of their structural characteristics: mounds used as arenas were significantly lower and broader than random mounds. Males engaged in display activity from late August to early January. On average, males performed 0.54 ± 0.04 display flights per minute during nocturnal focal watches, but there was considerable intra-male variation in display rate. Following a burst of activity immediately after their arrival at display arenas at dusk, male display rate was best explained by ambient levels of moonlight. Males produced a previously undescribed insect-like “tik tik” call when inactive on their territories. -

Nest Habitat Use of the Puerto Rican Nightjar Caprimulgus Noctitherus in Gua´Nica Biosphere Reserve

VILELLA Summary The Puerto Rican Nightjar Caprimulgus noctitherus is a ‘Critically Endangered’ caprimulgid endemic to coastal dry and lower montane forests of southwest Puerto Rico. I studied nest habitat use of this nightjar at the Gua´nica Biosphere Reserve in southwestern Puerto Rico. Nightjar nests (n 5 23) were located in evergreen and deciduous forest and were more common at elevations above 100 m. Nests were located from 2 mto125 m into the forest from the nearest road or trail and were characterised by a deep layer of leaf litter, and an open midstorey beneath a closed canopy. Six of the 10 nests found in evergreen forest were located within abandoned mahogany (Sweetenia mahogany) plantations. Habitat structure and vegetation composition were quantified at each nightjar nest and an equivalent number of randomly selected sites. Four of 13 habitat variables differed significantly (P , 0.05) between nest and random sites and included: elevation, leaf litter biomass, midstorey stem density, and canopy closure. Stepwise logistic regression generated a best model describing nightjar nest habitat. Leaf litter biomass, midstorey stem density, and canopy closure correctly classified 77.3% of nightjar nests. Management of forest stands at higher elevations to promote nightjar nest habitat structure, protection of private lands in the periphery of the Gua´nica Biosphere Reserve, and acquisition of privately owned forest tracts in other portions of the nightjar’s range will ensure the long-term persistence of the species. -

Field Guides Tour Report Arizona Nightbirds & More II 2015 May 7, 2014 to May 11, 2014 Dave Stejskal & Tom Johnson For our tour description, itinerary, past triplists, dates, fees, and more, please VISIT OUR TOUR PAGE. This adult Painted Redstart was busy feeding young in a hidden nest just off the South Fork Road in the Chiricahua Mountains. This beautiful species delighted us numerous times on this short tour. (Photo by guide Dave Stejskal) We enjoyed great weather on this year's trip, with little to no wind and pleasant temperatures (about 10-15 degrees F lower than normal for early May) for the entire trip. The lack of serious wind sure made looking for our primary targets -- the many nightbirds of this rich region -- much easier and so much more enjoyable! We started the trip off right with an easy Burrowing Owl staring back at us while we sat in the comfort of our van minutes from our airport hotel. We then put the birding and nightbirding into high gear by heading down to remote California Gulch west of Nogales. After a stop along the entrance road for a very cooperative male Montezuma Quail (WOW!!), we found a cooperative Five-striped Sparrow above California Gulch itself, offering great views to all before we walked away. Then, after a delicious picnic dinner in a lovely setting near the Mexican border, we got our lights onto a rare singing male Buff-collared Nightjar -- with a brief look of a curious female as well -- before we turned our attention to the Western Screech-Owl and Elf Owls in the area.
