"If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough." Meister Eckhart Dear Friends, With a heart full of gratitude I say, “Thank you!” These last six years have been quite the journey here at St. Anthony. We have weathered many a storm and the Lord has been at work through it all. I have been surprised time and again as I hear your stories about how God has worked in these years to draw you closer to Him. Many of these stories I am hearing for the first time now and it is so amazing to be able to reflect on how present and faithful God has been through everything. As we remember, the memory stirs up the encounter and it becomes present to us again. We are able to relive the moment. The more we tell the story, the more that it is cemented into our mind and heart. It is precisely in the midst of struggle and desolation that we need to remember God’s faithfulness so that we might be given hope to hold on and persevere, although the journey is hard. This is what we do every time we celebrate the liturgy. Every time we gather in church to pray and to celebrate Mass, we are remembering how God has worked in the lives of our ancestors through the stories that are made present to us in the reading of the Scriptures. This then gives us the reference for our own story, and we are able to see how God has worked in our lives, and this then impels us forward, to go out and tell the story. The Word of God is living and true. It is at work in us who believe if we let it in. How many times do we listen to the readings without really hearing them? How often do you prepare yourself for the Mass by reading the Scriptures and preparing the soil of your heart to receive the seeds the Divine Gardner wants to sow? How often do you sit and prayerfully read the Bible? St. Benedict begins his Holy Rule with this invitation, “Listen my son to the words of the Master and attend to them with the ear of your heart.” I am headed to the monastery to attend to the Lord’s invi- tation to spend more time prayerfully reading the Scriptures and chanting His praises in the Psalms throughout the day. I have heard Him call me and I am responding to the summons. The memories that I bring with me are filled with grace and blessings which will help me to see more and more how God is always at work, drawing us on in His wonderful love. I pray that you will remember vividly the blessings that you have experienced throughout your life from day to day, and that these will open your heart to see how the story of God in the Scriptures is your story as well, so that your heart might be primed to listen for His still small voice speaking to you as you seek His face. In gratitude and love, Fr. Jack D.
