Social Assessment Project Title: Western Province Ridges to Reef: Planning to Enhance the Conservation of Biodiversity Conservation Plan Applicant: World Wide Fund for Nature, Solomon Islands Because the project will implement activities in areas with Indigenous Peoples, a Social Assessment has been prepared, to demonstrate how the project will comply with CEPF’s Safeguard Policy on Indigenous Peoples. Indigenous Peoples in the project area A total of 18 indigenous tribes are known within the proposed project area of Kolombangara Island. However, the below list will be confirmed during consultation meetings with KIBCA (Kolombangara Island Biodiversity and Conservation Association), communities, other local partners, and stakeholders within the project site. Therefore, the list below may increase or decrease after the consultation meetings. KIBCA reports that approximately 6,000 people currently reside on Kolombangara Island 1. Koloma 2. Ngava 3. Vumba 4. Qoza 5. Kona 6. Sarelata 7. Paleka 8. Kumbongava 9. Bantongo 10. Jito 11. Siporae 12. Sikipozo 13. Padezaka 14. Matakale 15. Vasiluku 16. Sirebe 17. Vuri 18. Leanabako If funds permit, some awareness activities may also be carried out on Ghizo Island. Over the years, people from other islands/countries have either settled on or have been relocated to Ghizo Island for a host of reasons. Identifying indigenous peoples within the project area is thus a rather complicated task. Eleven major rural/semi-rural communities exist on Ghizo Island, excluding the town of Gizo itself. Saeraghi, Vorivori and Bibolo are descendants of the original settlers and owners of Ghizo Island. Paeloge and Suvania/Simboro settlers are immigrants from Simbo Island. -

Tropical Medicine and Health Vol. 36 No. 2, 2008, pp. 65-74 Copyright! 2008 by The Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine 65 Original article Bacterial contamination of drinking water and nutritional quality of diet in the areas of the western Solomon Islands devastated by the April 2, 2007 earthquake/tsunami Takuro Furusawa1*, Norio Maki2 and Shingo Suzuki2 Received 14 December, 2007 Accepted 6 March, 2008 Published online 2 July, 2008 Abstract: On 2nd April 2007, at 7:40 local time (20:40 GMT 1 April), a massive earthquake, the epicenter of which was 10 km deep and 45 km south-southeast of Gizo, the provincial capital of the Western Province, struck the Solomon Islands, killing 52 people and displacing approximately 5,000. This study, based on field research in May 2007, reports on the result of the cross-sectional assessment of the bacterial contamination (E. coli, Vibrio spp. and total bacteria) of drinking water and water sources and the longitudinal comparison of dietary intake and epide- miology in six earthquake- and tsunami-affected villages in the Western Province, Solomon Islands. The test-paper method revealed that 92.0% of drinking-water was unsafe in four camps of evacuated people. Only 3 out of 11 drink-water samples collected from safe water sources were free from contamination throughout the study villages. The reported occurrence of diarrhea, while only 7.6 per mil in 2001 and 4.8 per mil in 2003 in one of the study vil- lages, was 12.7 person-days per mil after the disaster in 2007. Deterioration of dietary intakes was not observed. -

Introduction The Ethnographic Experiment in Island Melanesia ♦l♦ Edvard Hviding and Cato Berg Anthropology in the Making: To the Solomon Islands, 1908 In 1908, three British scholars travelled, each in his own way, to the south-western Pacific in order to embark on pioneering anthropological fieldwork in the Solomon Islands. They were William Halse Rivers Rivers, Arthur Maurice Hocart and Gerald Camden Wheeler. Rivers (1864–1922), a physician, psychologist and self-taught anthropologist, was already a veteran fieldworker, having been a member of the Cambridge Torres Strait Expedition for seven months in 1898 (Herle and Rouse 1998), after which he had also carried out five months of fieldwork among the tribal Toda people of South India in 1901–2 (see Rivers 1906). The Torres Strait Expedition was a large-scale, multi-disciplinary effort with major funding, and had helped change a largely embryonic, descrip- tive anthropology into a modern discipline – reflective of the non-anthro- pological training of expedition leader Alfred Cort Haddon and his team, among whom Rivers and C.G. Seligman were to develop anthropological careers. During the expedition, Rivers not only engaged in a wide range of observations based on his existing training in psychology and physiology, but also increasingly collected materials on the social organisation of the Torres Strait peoples, work that ultimately resulted in him devising the ‘genealogical method’ for use by the growing discipline of anthropology, with which he increasingly identified. 2 Edvard Hviding and Cato Berg ♦ The 1908 fieldwork in Island Melanesia which is the focus of this book was on a much smaller scale than the Torres Strait Expedition, but it had 1 a more sharply defined anthropological agenda. -

No. 1 April 28, 1977 Human Biogeography in the Solomon Islands John Terrell Associate Curator, Oceanic ArchaeoijOGY and Ethnology Field Museum of Natural History As Ernst Mayr (1969) has observed, the "richness of tropical faunas and floras is proverbial." Although the degree of species diversity in the tropics has at times been exaggerated, tropical bird faunas, for example, "contain at least three times if not four or more times as many species, as comparable temperate zone bird faunas." It is not surprising then that a tropical island as large as New Guinea in the southwestern Pacific has played a special role in the refinement of evolutionary theory ( Diamond, 1971, 1973). In similar fashion, anthropologists have long recognized that the Melanesian islands of the Pacific, including New Guinea, are re- markable for the extreme degree of ethnic diversity encountered on them (fig. 1). While the magnitude of the dissimilarities among these tropical human populations has been occasionally overstated or misconstrued (Vayda, 1966), even casual survey of the findings made by social anthropologists, archaeologists, physical anthro- pologists, and linguists in Melanesia would confirm Oliver's (1962, p. 63) assessment that no other region of the world "contains such cultural variety as these islands." It is not an accident that zoologists, botanists, and anthropolo- gists have observed that one word, diversity, so aptly sums up the character of tropical populations in general, and the island popula- tions of Melanesia in particular. This common judgment, however, has not led to the development of a shared set of concepts and models, applicable at least in part both to lower organisms and to man, to account for that diversity. -

7 Gendered Ambition and Disappointment: Women and Men in a Vernacular Language Education Movement in Melanesia Debra McDougall Introduction ‘They ruin us when they teach English first’ –18-year-old man of Ranongga Island, Solomon Islands Young people of Solomon Islands are expected to learn to read and write in English, a language that many do not speak or understand well. Most rural children grow up speaking one (sometimes several) of the country’s more than 70 indigenous languages as well as the neo-Melanesian English-based creole Pijin; some urban children learn the indigenous language of their rural-born parents or grandparents, but most grow up speaking Pijin, which is the language of urban life (Jourdan, 2013). Multilingualism, rather than monolingualism, is the norm rather than the exception in Solomon Islands; people move fluidly between different indigenous languages, Pijin and English. Yet few feel entirely confident in English—the country’s official language, the language of status and the language of schooling. Even tertiary-trained teachers often lack confidence 183 UNEQUAL LIVES in their mastery of English and use Pijin as the language of instruction (Tanangada, 2013). English-only education is particularly devastating for rural children, who are already disadvantaged in the Solomon Islands educational system. For decades, scholars of multilingual education and language policy have argued that children learn best when taught in their first language (Ball, 2011; Lo Bianco, 2015; United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, 1953). Resistance to first-language education policies is often based on the false assumption that the sooner children learn a standardised national or global language, the more likely they are to master it. -

CEPF Safeguard Policy: Indigenous Peoples (OP4.10) Project Title: Ghizo and Kolombangara Ridges to Reef: Integrated planning for natural resources, communities, and biodiversity (Phase 2) Organization: World Wide Fund for Nature - Solomon Islands Application Code: 65964 Social Assessment –Kolombangara and Ghizo Islands As with Phase1, this project will continue to implement activities within areas where Indigenous Peoples reside; therefore, similar to the Phase 1 assessment, this Social Assessment has been compiled for communities reside on Ghizo and Kolombangara Islands, and was prepared to demonstrate how the project will comply with CEPF’s Safeguard Policy on Indigenous Peoples. Indigenous Peoples of Kolombangara The island of Kolombangara is divided into 2 provincial constituency wards, the Northern and Southern, and within these wards there are roughly 41 community villages within the Northern ward, and some 53 community villages occupying the Southern ward. Of these community villages there are 9 main settlements. According to the Kolombangara Island Biodiversity and Conservation Association (KIBCA) as of today, there are thought to be a total of 18 indigenous tribes known to reside within the two constituency wards of Kolombangara Island. KIBCA reports that approximately 6,000 people currently reside on Kolombangara Island, and current reports state that the population has been steadily growing since the last 2009 census. During the community consultation activities facilitated by KIBCA, WWF aims to generate up-to-date and accurate records of the total population, number of tribes and total number of people within each tribe, and to use this information to assist in recording indirect and direct beneficiaries of this R2R project. -

Predominantly Cretaceous basaltic basement sequences are divided into: (1) a plume-related Ontong Java Plateau terrain (OJPT) which includes Malaita, Ulawa, and northern Santa Isabel; (2) a `normal' ocean ridge related South Solomon MORB terrain (SSMT) which includes Choiseul and Guadalcanal; and (3) a hybrid `Makira terrain' which has both MORB and plume=plateau af®nities. The OJPT formed as an integral part of the massive Ontong Java Plateau (OJP), at c. 122 Ma and 90 Ma, respectively, was subsequently affected by Eocene±Oligocene alkaline and alnoitic magmatism, and was unaffected by subsequent arc development.
