Bacterial Contamination of Drinking Water and Nutritional Tropical Medicine and Health Vol. 36 No. 2, 2008, pp. 65-74 Copyright! 2008 by The Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine 65 Original article Bacterial contamination of drinking water and nutritional quality of diet in the areas of the western Solomon Islands devastated by the April 2, 2007 earthquake/tsunami Takuro Furusawa1*, Norio Maki2 and Shingo Suzuki2 Received 14 December, 2007 Accepted 6 March, 2008 Published online 2 July, 2008 Abstract: On 2nd April 2007, at 7:40 local time (20:40 GMT 1 April), a massive earthquake, the epicenter of which was 10 km deep and 45 km south-southeast of Gizo, the provincial capital of the Western Province, struck the Solomon Islands, killing 52 people and displacing approximately 5,000. This study, based on field research in May 2007, reports on the result of the cross-sectional assessment of the bacterial contamination (E. coli, Vibrio spp. and total bacteria) of drinking water and water sources and the longitudinal comparison of dietary intake and epide- miology in six earthquake- and tsunami-affected villages in the Western Province, Solomon Islands. The test-paper method revealed that 92.0% of drinking-water was unsafe in four camps of evacuated people. Only 3 out of 11 drink-water samples collected from safe water sources were free from contamination throughout the study villages. The reported occurrence of diarrhea, while only 7.6 per mil in 2001 and 4.8 per mil in 2003 in one of the study vil- lages, was 12.7 person-days per mil after the disaster in 2007. Deterioration of dietary intakes was not observed. Although further studies are expected to follow up on the changes in water, diet, and health in mid- and long-term recovery operations, the rapid assessment suggested the need to provide safe water or purifiers and education re- garding water and hygiene-related management in order to minimize health risks in devastated villages.     7 Gendered Ambition and Disappointment: Women and Men in a Vernacular Language Education Movement in Melanesia Debra McDougall Introduction ‘They ruin us when they teach English first’ –18-year-old man of Ranongga Island, Solomon Islands Young people of Solomon Islands are expected to learn to read and write in English, a language that many do not speak or understand well. Most rural children grow up speaking one (sometimes several) of the country’s more than 70 indigenous languages as well as the neo-Melanesian English-based creole Pijin; some urban children learn the indigenous language of their rural-born parents or grandparents, but most grow up speaking Pijin, which is the language of urban life (Jourdan, 2013). Multilingualism, rather than monolingualism, is the norm rather than the exception in Solomon Islands; people move fluidly between different indigenous languages, Pijin and English. Yet few feel entirely confident in English—the country’s official language, the language of status and the language of schooling. Even tertiary-trained teachers often lack confidence 183 UNEQUAL LIVES in their mastery of English and use Pijin as the language of instruction (Tanangada, 2013). English-only education is particularly devastating for rural children, who are already disadvantaged in the Solomon Islands educational system. For decades, scholars of multilingual education and language policy have argued that children learn best when taught in their first language (Ball, 2011; Lo Bianco, 2015; United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, 1953). Resistance to first-language education policies is often based on the false assumption that the sooner children learn a standardised national or global language, the more likely they are to master it.

    Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands First compiled by Nancy Sack and Gwen Sinclair Updated by Nancy Sack Current to January 2020 Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands Background An inquiry from a librarian in Micronesia about how to identify subject headings for the Pacific islands highlighted the need for a list of authorized Library of Congress subject headings that are uniquely relevant to the Pacific islands or that are important to the social, economic, or cultural life of the islands. We reasoned that compiling all of the existing subject headings would reveal the extent to which additional subjects may need to be established or updated and we wish to encourage librarians in the Pacific area to contribute new and changed subject headings through the Hawai‘i/Pacific subject headings funnel, coordinated at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.. We captured headings developed for the Pacific, including those for ethnic groups, World War II battles, languages, literatures, place names, traditional religions, etc. Headings for subjects important to the politics, economy, social life, and culture of the Pacific region, such as agricultural products and cultural sites, were also included. LARSON (2) Abstract. – The species of Schismatogobius from Papua New Guinea to Samoa are reviewed and compared to the three known species described from the area. Eleven species are recognized including seven new species. These are described using genetic and morphomeristic approaches. The species differ by a high percentage of divergence in partial COI gene (636 bp) and by several characters including the number of pectoral fin rays, the pattern of the ventral surface of the head in males and/or females, the pectoral fin colour pattern, the jaw length/ head length ratio or the jaw length of male and/or female, and the fin lengths. Onze espèces ont été répertoriées dont sept Editor: J.Y. Sire nouvelles. Celles-ci sont décrites en utilisant des approches génétique et morphoméristique. Eight species are recognized including four new species. These are described using genetic and morphomeristic approaches. The species differ by a high percentage of genetic divergence in partial COI gene (652 bp) and by several characters including the number of pectoral fn rays, the pattern of the ventral surface of the head in males and/or females, the pectoral fn colour pattern, the jaw length/head length ratio or the jaw length of male and/or female.

    The Unintended Consequences of Clarification: Development, Disputing, and the Dynamics of Community in Ranongga, Solomon Islands Debra McDougall, University of Chicago Abstract. Outside agencies working in the Solomon Islands—whether a postwar land commission or a late-twentieth-century global environmental organization— have consistently called for the clarification of property rights as the necessary start- ing point for any form of economic development. Many residents of Ranongga, a small mountainous island in the Western Solomons, are eager to have their terri- torial rights recognized by national and international organizations and by other islanders. Yet transforming complex, crosscutting, localized relationships into ab- stract rights that are commensurable, predictable, and knowable to outsiders raises major political and ethical dilemmas for Ranonggan leaders. As in other Oceanic polities, the true people of the land are supposed to generously welcome foreigners. Aggressively claiming exclusive rights for oneself or one’s group would effectively alienate those others who are necessary for a properly functioning polity. Clarifica- tion—however necessary for the workings of a capitalist economy—thus threatens to undermine the tenuous achievement of unity that Ranonggans see as the pre- requisite to peace, prosperity, and (as they understand it) development. The difficulty of articulating indigenous regimes of land tenure with the legal apparatus of a colonial and postcolonial state has long been consid- ered a major impediment to economic development in the Solomon Islands. The legal articulation of property rights in the Solomons might be consid- ered a ‘‘rationalization of means’’ in Max Weber’s sense, a rationalization that may not be the inevitable counterpart to a capitalist political econ- omy but is, as John Kelly puts it in this volume, ‘‘highly favored by capi- tal’’ insofar as it makes it possible to enforce contracts and predict the out- comes of enterprise.
