  • A Summary of the Spanish State's Democratic Regression And
A SUMMARY OF THE SPANISH STATE’S DEMOCRATIC REGRESSION AND GRIEVANCES AGAINST CATALONIA 8-11-2017 Brussels — 1— HISTORICAL ANTECEDENTS Catalonia has long had a self-governing spirit, manifested for the most part through the governing body called the Generalitat, created in 1359. It is safe to say that Catalonia’s will to exist has persevered over centu- ries, despite the lack of understanding and contempt received in the form of attempts to hinder its recognition as a nation. In this regard, the heroic efforts of municipalism in the defense of Catalans’ rights and in- terests are worth highlighting. It is impossible to understand the social and political reality of today’s Catalonia without considering the work done and still ongoing by local councils around the country. Throughout recent history, since the end of Franco’s dictatorship, Cata- lonia has sought its place within the Spanish state by means of loyal cooperation. At that time, Catalan representatives worked strategically to develop the possibilities offered by the new constitutional framework to implement the self-government and national recognition of Catalonia, without ever renouncing the right to self-determination. From the end of the 1970’s. political Catalanism offered stability to Spanish govern- ments in exchange for a progressive consolidation of its self- government. This was formalized with the approval of the 1979 Statute of Autonomy. Nonetheless, the Catalan charter was born with signifi- cant shortcomings, which soon came to light. It is only necessary to remember the attempted coup d’état of February 23, 1981 and the con- sequent Organic Law on the Harmonization of Autonomy Process (LOAPA), that same year, as examples of Spanish institutions’ clearly restrictive intent toward Catalonia.

Enjoying the expertise of all the professionals that I came across, I have been immersed in a constant intellectual challenge. However, I have not only gained knowledge in the area of human rights, which, to be honest, has been much. Instead, this experience has also been an enriching stage of self-knowledge and personal development. Throughout this period, I have been confronted with some first-time experiences and obstacles to overcome: adaptation to two countries, instruction in a foreign language and nostalgia for family and friends.

  • The Referendum for Catalan Independence and Its Aftermath: a Personal Account
IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 4 – Issue 1 – Spring 2019 The Referendum for Catalan Independence and its Aftermath: A Personal Account Bill Phillips, University of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain Abstract This account does not claim to be academic in nature – though all of the events described and statements reported can be found online on media websites – but is, rather, a personal description of the extraordinary events which occurred in Catalonia from September 2017 to January 2018. It includes digressions describing the significance of football, road networks and other regions in Spain, but above all it provides eyewitness testimony of a people’s wish to express themselves freely and democratically at the ballot box. The Spanish government’s brutal response has led to the country’s gravest crisis for decades, with the monarchy seriously questioned, the constitution beset and Europe glowering disapprovingly from the north. The situation is by no means resolved with ten members of the Catalan government and two independence lobbyists now on trial for rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds, and six members of the Catalan government in exile in Belgium, Scotland and Switzerland. Key words: Catalonia, referendum, political prisoners, exile 53 IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 4 – Issue 1 – Spring 2019 Protest Deeply fearful that the Catalan referendum on independence would go ahead, on September 20, 2017, Madrid ordered the Guardia Civil to raid a number of Catalan government offices and arrest senior civil servants. One of these government offices was the Catalan Finance Ministry. As a consequence, 40,000 people gathered outside the building.

From the power Vivian Gu struggles within Macedonia after Alexander the Great’s death to the formation of the Director-General USSR, the ACC has never feared delving into history’s most contentious times and challenging delegates of all kinds. This iteration of the committee will certainly follow Derek Wu that tradition. Chief of Staff Tyler Rosenzweig For this iteration, the ACC will be tackling a pressing situation that has been Director of Logistics developing in recent years: the Catalonian independence movement.
