    Campitello – 5 Day Ski Itinerary Easy Medium Hard Day 1: The Local Fields - Grade: From either Campitello or Canazei ski lifts explore the local ski areas of Col Rodella (Campitello) and Belvedere (Canazei). Both fields offer intermediate terrain with a few steep sections that are easy to see. There are some wonderful long runs with the best being the run to the valley from the cable car at Col Rodella. You can ski to the village of Canazei from both fields. If you want to follow the sun, it is best to ski Col Rodella in the morning and Belvedere in the afternoon. Both ski areas are connected by a telecabine (lift numbers 155 and 105) and so access is easy. Highlights The skiing: From Belvedere make sure you ski down to the Pordoi pass and take the lift to Sass Pordoi for a spectacular view of the dolomites. Sass Pordoi featured in the film Cliff Hanger. You should not ski down from here – all of the runs from the top are off piste, unpatrolled and extremely dangerous. Take the cable car back down and ski. Eating: There are a number of great places to eat on the mountain. Our favourites are Tita Piaz and Ciampolin at Belvedere and Rifugio Des Alpes and Salei on Col Rodella. Stop before 1pm to beat the crowds – Italians religiously stop for lunch at this time. Apres Ski: The round bar at Des Alpes in the afternoon. If you're skiing back to Canazei, make sure you leave before the slopes close. Day 2: Ski Val Gardena - Grade: Val Gardena – the home of the world cup downhill piste is also an easy first tour from the Fassa Valley.

Hopkins (1844 - 1889) Nomination of the Dolomites for inscription on the World Natural Heritage List UNESCO THE TENTATIVE LIST AND THE NOMINATION OF THE DOLOMITES This Nomination Document is the answer to the Decision to defer the previous nomination of the Dolomites (2005) expressed by the World Heritage Commit- tee during the Thirty-first Session Christchurch, New Zealand (23 June – 2 July 2007). In detail, the World Heritage Committee having examined Documents WHC-07/31. COM/8B and WHC-07/31.COM/INF.8B.2, defers the examination of the nomina- tion of The Dolomites, Italy, to the World Heritage List on the basis of criteria (vii) and (viii). As outlined in the document licensed by the Word Heritage Committee at the end of the 29th session held in Durban, South Africa, in July 2005, Italy has proposed the Dolomites as one of the sites deserving consideration for a possible future nomination as a site of outstanding universal value.     ARABBA: TO A STEP FROM CLOUDS Arabba is a jewel in the Dolomites, a small an peaceful village in the heart of the Dolomites. Arabba or “Reba” in ladin, as it was called in the local Ladin language, is located in the heart of the Dolomites (1.600 m above sea level), and is surrounded by the magnificent Group of the Sella mountains (World Nature Heritage – UNESCO) at the foot of the Passo Pordoi and the Passo Campolongo. Arabba is part of the municipality of Livinallongo del Col di Lana, Fodom in Ladin (the traditional language) and Buchenstein in German, one of the municipalities which belongs to the 5 Ladin valleys. On the other side you can admire the queen of the Dolomites, the Marmolada Glacier, which with its 3.342 meters represents the highest point of the Dolomites. Moreover on the Marmolada Glacier we find the famous ski slope, long more than 12 km. Arabba is right at the centre of the famous Dolomiti Superski Ski Area, encircled by a breathtaking landscape. With 63 km of perfectly groomed slopes, Arabba boasts brand new lifts and is well linked to the other Ladin valleys around the Sella Group. In addition to this, Arabba is able to meet all your desires thanks to its first class skiing and tourist facilities. The juxtaposition of Middle and Upper Triassic reefs and basins are preserved due to the lack of strong tectonic deformation and is strengthened by erosion to form the extraordinary landscape as seen today. Since the outstanding studies of Richthofen (1860) and Mojsisovics (1879), who correctly recognized the primary geometries of the build-ups (“Überguss-Schichtung”) in transition to the basins, the Dolomites are the type area for heteropic facies developments. Bosellini (1984) presented the first modern synthesis of depositional geometries of the build-ups. Regional sequence stratigraphy was firmly established with the revision of the chronostratigraphic framework by Brack & Rieber (1993), De Zanche et al. (1993) and Mietto & Manfrin (1995). In addition, a better understanding was developed of progradation and retrogradation geometries of carbonate platform development in context with sea level changes (Gianolla et al., 1998, with further references).

In the course of an excursion into the Dolomites some soil and litter samples were taken in the alpine meadow on the Sella Pass. The Sella Pass (2220 m a.s.l.) is an important transition between the Val Gardena / Gröden (South Tyrol) and the Fassa Valley (Trentino). The pass is situated between the mountains of the Sella group in the East and the Langkofel group in the West near the upper limit of the timber line to the alpine grassland.
