A study of how Swedish football clubs work with their media channels and how it affects the professional role of sport´s journalists By: Emil Annetorp Supervisor: Gunnar Nygren Södertörn University | School of Social Sciences Master thesis 15 credits, spring term 2018 Subject | Journalism spring term 2018 1 Abstract Previous studies have shown that football is getting more commercial and together with increased digital possibilities football clubs can bypass traditional media and attract audience via their own media channels. With strategic communication and agenda setting as a theoretic background I wanted to investigate how Swedish top football clubs used their own media channels, what affected the media strategy of the big clubs in Sweden and how sports journalists perceived the football club’s communicative development. I choose AIK as a case and I observed them and sports journalists before, during and after the local derby against Djurgården. Furthermore, I analyzed AIK´s content in their own media channels and media’s coverage of AIK-Djurgården. Finally, I conducted qualitative interviews with representatives from AIK and three sport journalists at three Swedish newspapers. My study revealed that the AIK significantly planned and applied strategic content and messaging across their media channels, consistent with the techniques used by more mature and traditional media organizations. When it comes to access to the club and players there are tendencies and signs of less accessibility, but in general Swedish sport journalists see the Swedish Allsvenskan as open and not as commercial and controlled as the major European football leagues.

Høyskolen er ikke ansvarlig for oppgavens metoder, resultater, konklusjoner eller anbefalinger. Sammendrag I denne oppgaven har det blitt gjennomført en historisk ekspansjonsteorietisk analyse av Sarpsborg 08 Fotballforening. Vi har analysert den sportslige og økonomiske utviklingen til klubben siden fusjonen i 2008 frem til i dag. Dette har blitt gjennomført ved å knytte et teoretisk rammeverk opp mot den empiriske konteksten, for deretter å drøfte hvordan klubben sin strategiske inngangsstrategi har hjulpet dem å oppnå den suksessen vi har sett de seneste årene. Etter dette har det blitt diskutert hvordan klubben kan utvikle seg videre ved hjelp av innovasjon. I 2008 fusjonerte 16 klubber i Sarpsborg kommune til én satsningsklubb, som ble kalt Sarpsborg 08 Fotballforening. På dette tidspunktet lå klubben i bunnen av norsk 1. divisjon (divisjonen under Eliteserien). Tolv år senere har klubben tatt bronsemedalje i Eliteserien, kommet til to cupfinaler og kvalifisert seg for Europaligaen. Formålet med denne oppgaven har vært å se nærmere på hvorfor S08 har lyktes så bra med sin beslutning om å fusjonere.. Det gjorde at vi kom frem til følgende problemstilling: Resultater fra strategiske ekspansjonsbeslutninger: En historisk ekspansjonsteoretisk analyse av Sarpsborg 08. For å svare best mulig på problemstillingen har det blitt utarbeidet tre forskningsspørsmål (Fx): F1: Hvordan har ekspansjonsstrategiske beslutninger påvirket sportslig utvikling? F2: Hvordan har fusjonen påvirket klubbens økonomiske resultater? F3: Hvordan kan strategiske innovasjons-beslutninger utvikle Sarpsborg 08 ytterligere? Vi har valgt ut Lien og Jakobsen (2015) sin analytiske seks-stegmodell for ekspansjon som teoretisk rammeverk.
