For instance, the common redstart is a bird species breeding in the lowlands, whereas the black redstart is native to higher altitudes. Some species such as common swift and kestrel, which are originally adapted to enduring in rocky areas, even found a secondary habitat in the house facades and street canyons of towns and big cities. Classic rock dwellers include peregrine, eagle owl, rockthrush, snowfinch and alpine swift. The presentation focuses on the biology, causes of threat as well as conservation measures taken by the national park concerning the species golden eagle, wallcreeper, crag martin and ptarmigan. Birds breeding in the rocks might not be that high in number, but their survival is all the more fascinating and worth protecting as such! All previously known Bulgarian slugs from the Arionidae, Milacidae, Limacidae and Agriolimacidae families have been discussed in this paper. It is based on many years of individual field research, examination of all accessible private and museum collections as well as on critical analysis of the published data. The taxa from families to species are sup plied with synonymy, descriptions of external morphology, anatomy, bionomics, distribution and all records from Bulgaria. It also includes the original key to all species. The illustrative material comprises 118 drawings, including 116 made by the author, and maps of localities on UTM grid. The occurrence of 37 slug species was ascertained, including 1 species (Tandonia pirinia- na) which is quite new for scientists. The occurrence of other 4 species known from publications could not bo established. Basing on the variety of slug fauna two zoogeographical limits were indicated. One separating the Stara Pianina Mountains from south-western massifs (Pirin, Rila, Rodopi, Vitosha. Mountains), the other running across the range of Stara Pianina in the^area of Shipka pass. INTRODUCTION Like other Balkan countries, Bulgaria is an area of Palearctic especially interesting in respect to malacofauna. So far little investigation has been carried out on molluscs of that country and very few papers on slugs (mostly contributions) were published. The papers by B a b o r (1898) and J u r in ić (1906) are the oldest ones.

Novaj; Hungary) A. Dávid Abstract: Among the Egerian Age exposures of North-east Hungary the Molluscan Clay of Wind Brickyard (Eger) and Nyárjas Hill (Novaj) contain fossils in exceptional richness. Distribution of molluscs of the Molluscan Clay of these two outcrops according to habitats and feeding habits is examined and compared. There are definite differences between the two localities. Introduction Among the several Upper-Oligocene outrops of North-Hungary the Molluscan Clay layers «f _Wind Brickyard, Eger and Nyárjas Hill, Novaj is compared (Fig.l.). These layers contain well-preserved „micro-mollusc" fossils abudantly. The bivalves, gastropods and schaphopods which were living here during the Egerian stage have belonged into the Hinia — Cadulus fossil community. It refers to similar paleoenvironments in case of both localities. The sea was deeper than 120 metres and the bottom was covered by fine-gra ined, clayey sediments. The aim of the investigation was to examine the distribution of the molluscs according to habitats and feeding habits in the collected materials. Methods Fifteen kilograms of clay was taken from both localities. After drying the samples were treated with hot water and peroxide of hydrogen. This material was washed out through a 0,5 nun sieve. At the end the molluscan remains were assorted from among the other fossils (e.gJ^oraminifera, Decapoda, Echinoidea, Osteichthyes).

  • Aplexa Hypnorum (Gastropoda: Physidae) Exerts Competition on Two Lymnaeid Species in Periodically Dried Ditches
Ann. Limnol. - Int. J. The introduction of A. hypnorum into each ditch was followed by the progressive coloni- zation of the entire habitat by the physid and progressive reduction of the portion occupied by the lymnaeid towards the upstream extremity of the ditch. Moreover, the size of the lymnaeid population decreased significantly over the 7-year period, with values noted in 2008 that were significantly lower than those recorded in 2002. In contrast, the mean densities were relatively stable in the sites only occupied by G. truncatula or O. glabra. Laboratory investigations were also carried out by placing juvenile, intermediate or adult physids in aquaria in the presence of juvenile, intermediate or adult G. truncatula (or O. glabra) for 30 days. The life stage of A. hypnorum had a significant influence on the survival of each lymnaeid. In snail combinations, this survival was significantly lower for adult G. truncatula (or O.

D.W. Taylor. New data on biogeography, classification and phylogeny of Рhysidae (Gastropoda: Hygrophila) УДК : 594.38:574.9:575.86 D.W. Taylor, Prof. (Retired) Ph.D. (Eugene, Oregon, U.S.A.) NEW DATA ON BIOGEOGRAPHY, CLASSIFICATION AND PHYLOGENY OF Physidae, a world-wide family of freshwater snails with about 90-100 species, have been difficult to classify for some 200 years. Reasons are the lack of shell characters and lack of morphological study. Thus identifications based on shells ar е often at variance with those founded on morphology, and published information from most of the world is unreliable as to the species named. Studies going beyond shell features began with the work by M ьller [I], one of the first monographs of a mollusc species, illustrating the mantle projections in Physa fontinalis, Modem study began with description by Slugocka of the reproductive systems of the three species of Switzerland, including histological sections as well as gross morphology. Her conclusion [2:104] that the penis is a well-defined organ with characteristic shape in each species has not been val- ued sufficiently.

In 1942 this species was found in the Czech Republic for the first time and a total of 155 species records were obtained by the end of 2005. Based on distribution data, we observed the gradual expansion of this gastropod not only in the Elbe Lowland, where its occurrence is concentrated, but also in other regions of the Czech Republic particularly between 2001 and 2005. Information on habitat, altitude and co-occurrence with other molluscs are presented. Key words: alien species, Czech Republic, distribution, Ferrissia fragilis, habitats Introduction used for all specimens of the genus Ferrissia found in the Czech Republic. Probably only one species of the genus Ferrissia Records of the genus Ferrissia exist from all (Walker, 1903) occurs in Europe. Different Czech neighbouring countries (Frank et al. 1990, theories exist, about whether it is an indigenous Lisický 1991, Frank 1995, Strzelec and Lewin and overlooked taxon or rather a recently 1996, Glöer and Meier-Brook 2003) and also introduced species in Europe (Falkner and from other European countries, e.g.
