Esperanza III, La Paz, Baja California Sur 23090, Mexico 3Asociación de Pesca Deportiva y Ecoturismo de Bahía de los Ángeles, Domicilio conocido Bahía de los Ángeles, Baja California 22980, Mexico ABSTRACT: We used photo-identification data collected from 2003 through 2009 to estimate pop- ulation structure, site fidelity, abundance, and movements of this species along the west coast of the Gulf of California to make recommendations for effective conservation and management. Of 251 whale sharks identified from 1784 photographs, 129 sharks were identified in Bahía de Los Ángeles and 125 in Bahía de La Paz. Only juveniles (mostly small) were found in these 2 bays. At Isla Espíritu Santo, we identified adult females; at Gorda Banks we identified 15 pregnant females. High re-sighting rates within and across years provided evidence of site fidelity among juvenile sharks in the 2 bays. Though the juveniles were not permanent residents, they used the areas regularly from year to year. A proportion of the juveniles spent days to a month or more in the coastal waters of the 2 bays before leaving, and periods of over a month outside the study areas before entering the bays again. -

Body Markings of the Whale Shark: Vestigial Or Functional?

Box 48561, 595 Burrard Street, Vancouver, BC V7X 1A3, Canada ABSTRACT The whale shark’s distinctive body markings are similar to those of other orectolobiform sharks. These markings likely conceal their sluggish, bottom-dwelling relatives through disruptive colouration. It is argued here that the whale shark’s body markings similarly function to camouflage them in their pelagic environment. The whale shark’s countershaded colouration eliminates the optical appearance of relief against its visual background. Disruptive patterns resembling elements common in its environmental background break up the whale shark’s outline. Other possible functions for the whale shark’s markings are considered, including: radiation shielding, intraspecific communication (species recognition, sex recognition, postural displays, schooling coordination), and interspecific communication (aggressive mimicry). However, they are either discounted or evidence substantiating these functions is found to be lacking. This litter established that whale sharks develop by aplacental yolk-sac viviparity, with embryos hatching from eggs within the female. The range of developmental stages in this litter suggested ongoing fertilization over an extended period of time, with embryos of different ages possibly sired by different males. -

Shark Species Profiles Background: Sharks have existed for about 400 million years, before dinosaurs roamed the earth! They belong to a class of fish called Chondrichthyes. Chrondrichthyes means "cartilaginous fishes". The skeletons of sharks and other Chondrichthyans are made of cartilage unlike human skeletons that are made of bone. Although all sharks have some similarities such as having gills and fins, they come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and personalities. They also live in many different habitats and in different parts of the world. Materials: There are 8 shark species profiles included in this activity with information on size, color, diet, and habitat of each shark. Focus is on sharks that live in waters off the Florida coast although sharks from other parts of the world are also included: 1. Bull shark 2. White shark 3. Tiger shark 4. Great hammerhead shark 5. Shortfin mako shark 6. Thresher shark 7. Whale shark 8. Leopard shark In addition, there are also species profiles on closely related rays, skates, and sawfish that may also be included in classroom learning activities: 1. Atlantic stingray 2. Clearnose skate 3. Smalltooth sawfish Information on size, color, diet, habitat, and geographical location is included in each species profile as well as a photo and a distribution map. Classroom Activities: • Graph the maximum length of each species to determine which species is the largest and which is the smallest and how they compare to the size of humans • Make a shark mobile with cut outs using the provided patterns and instructions, using shark species profiles for guidelines on the coloration of each shark. -

Amazing Shark Facts Answer Sheet 1. Sharks live in every ocean. Sharks swim in every ocean of the world, from warm tropic waters to icy polar seas. Some live in the deep, dark waters of the ocean, while others bask in sunlit waters close to the surface. Some prefer the high seas, others live in water closer to shore. A few sharks even swim up rivers, and at least one species, the bull shark, is sometimes found in fresh water lakes. 2. All sharks look alike. No, many kinds of sharks which live in the open ocean have torpedo-shaped bodies. Sharks that live near the shore are not as streamlined and some sharks that live on the sea bottom have long, eel-like or flattened bodies. The shape of a shark’s body can be a clue to its habitat and way of life. 3. Sharks were around before dinosaurs. An ancient sharklike fish, called Cladoselache, swam in Devonian seas about 400 million years ago. Most sharks, as we know them today, developed during the Cretaceous Period, about 64 million years ago when dinosaurs ruled the earth. 4. All sharks are dangerous. Definitely not! Of the 370 different kinds of sharks found in the oceans, three are most often involved in attacks on humans: the great white shark, the tiger shark and the bull shark. This was the first record for continental Europe and represents an increase of the species’ known range. The whale shark Rhincodon typus Smith 1828, was first described from a 4·6 m (total length, LT) specimen harpooned in Table Bay, South Africa (Stevens, 2007). It is the largest living fish on earth reaching c. 18 m LT and a mass of c. 21 t. Externally, R. typus is characterized by a broad, flattened head, a very large and nearly terminal mouth, very large gill slits, three prominent longitudinal ridges on its upper flanks, a large first dorsal fin, a semi-lunate caudal fin and a unique checkerboard pattern of light spots and stripes on a dark background (Compagno, 2001).
