Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Priest Let us pray. lmighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened Ato us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The people are seated. The Lesson 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 Reader A reading from St. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in Iturn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you--unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them--though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. The people stand.

Gospel Acclamation Wo rd s : Charles Wesley (1707-1788) “Love’s redeeming work is done” Music: Thomas Foster

Love’s redeeming work is done, fought the fight, the battle won. Death in vain forbids him rise; Christ has opened paradise. Lives again our glorious King;where, O death, is now thy ? Once he died our souls to save, where thy victory, O grave? Soar we now where Christ has led, following our exalted Head; made like him, like him we rise, ours the cross, the grave, the skies.

4 The Gospel John 20:1-18

Priest jThe Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her. Priest The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The people are seated. Sermon The Reverend Janet Broderick

The Holy Communion Offertory Anthem words: Song of Solomon “Rise up, my love, my fair one” music: Healy Willan (1880-1968) Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away; for lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear upon the earth; the time of singing of birds is come. The people stand. Sursum Corda Priest The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Priest Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Priest Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. The Preface t is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, ICreator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: People Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The people stand. The priest continues: oly and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin Hand become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. 7 He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer Priest And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, ur Father, who art in heaven, O hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

8 The Breaking of the Bread The bread is broken. A period of silence is kept. Priest Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Voluntary Gabriel Fauré Tantum Ergo

Communion Hymn Will L. Thompson “Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling" Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, Calling for you and for me; See, on the portals He’s waiting and watching, Watching for you and for me. Come home, Ye who are weary, come home! Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling, Calling, O sinner, come home! Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading, Pleading for you and for me? Why should we linger and heed not His mercies, Mercies for you and for me? Refrain Time is now fleeting, the moments are passing, Passing for you and for me; Shadows are gathering, death beds are coming, Coming for you and for me. Refrain Oh! For the wonderful love He has promised, Promised for you and for me; Though we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon, Pardon for you and for me. Refrain. The people stand. Postcommunion Prayer

Priest Let us pray. People Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 9 The Blessing

The priest blesses the people. is mercy is enough, and His grace is sufficient. HHis reign is righteous, His yoke is easy, and His burden is light. He is indestructible. He is indescribable. He is incomprehensible. He is inescapable. He is invincible. He is irresistible. He is irrefutable. I can’t get Him out of my mind… And I can’t get Him out of my heart. I can’t outlive Him… And I can’t live without Him. The Pharisees couldn’t stand Him, but found they couldn’t stop Him. Satan tried to tempt Him, but found he couldn’t trip Him. Pilot examined Him on trial, but found he couldn’t find fault in Him. The Romans crucified him, but they couldn’t take His life. Death couldn’t handle Him, and the grave couldn’t hold Him. That’s My King! Just give me Jesus! He had no predecessor, and He will have no successor. He is the Lion, and He is the Lamb. He is God, and He is Man. He is the seven-way King: He is the King of the Jews…that’s a racial King. He is the King of Israel… that’s a national King. He is the King of righteousness… that’s a moral King. He is the King of the ages… that’s an everlasting King. He is the King of heaven… that’s an eternal King. He is the King of glory… that’s a celestial King. HE IS THE KING OF KINGS AND THE LORD OF LORDS! The blessing of God Almighty, the Father and the Song be upon you and remain with you always.

Betty Pulkingham (b. 1928) I am the bread of life; they who come to me shall not hunger; they who believe in me shall not thirst. No one can come to me unless the Father draw them. And I will raise them up, and I will raise them up on the last day.

The Bread that I will give is my Flesh for the life of the world, and they who eat of this bread, they shall live for ever. Refrain

Unless you eat of the Flesh of the Son of Man and drink of his Blood, you shall not have life within you. Refrain

I am the resurrection, I am the life. They who believe in me, even if they die, they shall live for ever. Refrain

Easter: the moment when God reaches into our most desolate place and says, “I am here. Fear not. I am greater than your heart.” Deeepen your faith: attend our six-week Wednesday night course on Zoom. For six Wednesdays, April 14 through May 19 at 7 pm, the Very Reverend Jim Munroe and our rector, the Reverend Janet Broderick, will discuss ways in which we may carry the Easter hope into every moment. Does it seem, as you listen to the news, to your body, to your heart, that you’re faced with issues beyond your control? “I want to go to Washington and yell ‘Stop’, but what good would that do?” “I want to run another marathon, but my aging body says no.” “I want to get some peace over that thing I did twenty years ago but forgiving myself does nothing.” The God of hope is very real—it is possible to handle issues beyond your control with the risen Christ… right by your side.

Jim Munroe attended Phillips Academy, Williams College, Wycliffe Hall (Oxford) and Virginia Theological Seminary, with brief stints along the way for hockey, the Marine Crops and quitting smoking. Early on, he served for 4 years as Curate at Grace Church in NYC. There followed 14 years as Rector of St. John’s Church, in Northampton, MA, and 17 years as Dean of Christ Church Cathedral in Springfield, MA. Now five years into retirement, Jim travels to Manhattan every weekend to lend a hand at Calvaryt/St. George’s Church. Best of all, he finally proved that unadul- terated grace is real when an amazing woman named Gilda agreed to be his wife two years ago.

church offices CLOSED next week To give our clergy and staff a much-needed break, the church offices will be closed next week, except for emergencies.
