Crop 1203 — Introduction JoyalStack Price Guide TO USED MAGIC BOOKS — Crop 1203 — Introduction Putting a price on a magic book is far from being an exact science. Apart from the the book's content and its author, many factors must be considered: the edition, the condition of the book, the publication date, how many copies were printed, if it's still available or out of print, if an upcoming reprint was recently announced, the presence or lack of a dust jacket, if it's a signed copy, etc. You might also have some subjective criteria: perhaps you received the book as a gift, it was your first magic book, it reminds of a favorite lecture you attended, etc. It goes without saying that evaluating a magic library is a time consuming process. Although we are dealing with magic books, there is no magic way to arrive easily at an exact value. However, hopefully, this guide will make the task easier for you. In the current edition, named Crop 1203, nearly 10,000 prices were compiled for 7 time periods. PERIOD COMPILATION OF... 1992+ July 1992 to December 2001 1,353 prices 2002+ January 2002 to December 2007 3,178 prices 2008 January to December 2008 516 prices 2009 January to December 2009 2,683 prices 2010 January to December 2010 672 prices 2011 January to December 2011 437 prices 2012 January to March 2012 826 prices Note that lowest or highest prices have been dropped from the compilation. The same is true for books coming from prominent collections or offered by prestigious auctioneers. Most values of this guide are presented as a range from low to high; for example, $6 ... $31. The figures on left generally apply to softcover editions, recent editions or reprints. The figures on the right are for hardcover editions with dust jackets, first or deluxe editions and signed copies. If you are looking to buy a certain work but are not in a hurry, aim for the figures on the left side. Otherwise, go for the figures on the right side. If you are a seller eager to sell, aim for the figures on the left side. Otherwise, go for the figures on the right side. You will also notice that values are given for different years (from 1992 to 2012). If you see an abrupt rise, it might mean that it's a worthwhile book that has recently gone out of print. On the other hand, if you see a sharp decline, it might mean that a reprint just came out. The changes through time will also tell you if the value is now stable or still volatile. Keep in mind that, whatever values the guide suggests, you should by no means put aside your own evaluation. ©2012 Martin Joyal — All rights reserved. • Psychic Perspectives
Psychic Perspectives By Craig Browning Involved with the world of Magic & Puppetry since 1963 (just barely out of diapers when he got his first top hat) Craig Browning's early-year inspirations came from television - Mark Wilson's Magic Land of Alakazam and the popular Sherri Lewis & Lambchop shows. Though he was already doing backyard performances by the time he was six, featuring his own "Vanishing Beagle" illusion (the first of many "original" illusions he'd go on to create) Craig's role as a performing pros would have to wait a couple of years… just a couple though; by the time he was ten he was working a fairly regular schedule playing Christopher Robbin, the lad of the Thousand Acre Woods, as part of a promotion for a new kid's clothing line. It was a role he'd fill well into his early teens. By the mid-1970s the idea of being an "Illusionist" was firmly set in his mind via the success of Doug Henning and other revivalists of the day. The one that captured his attention most and the one, who would lend to Craig Browning the greatest sense of impetus however, was South American legend Richiardi. The famed manner by which this late master presented the Buzz Saw and Decapitation effects as well as his mastery over the classic Broom Suspension revealed to this then aspiring teen, insight as to how magic was to be performed. Though a brief tour with the U.S. Navy would prove a minor interruption Craig Browning would pursue his role as a stage Illusionist well into the late 1980s and early 90s.

We had 29 in the seats and three guests, Dr. Ken Schreibman, Jim Duel and Bill Jensen. Bev Bergeron’s “Teach-in” was on his home-made sight gag, the tape measure watch. He showed how to make it and gave us some great lines, “It’s a foot and a half after 3 o- clock”. President Matson did another of his “Theory and Thaumaturgy lectures on rethinking the Hot Rod force. He explained some verbal lines to eliminate the weaknesses of the technique. He also applied the principle to forcing envelopes. Phil Schwartz, resident magic historian explained that the day of the meeting, July 18th, was Floyd Thayer’s 144th birthday and showed his book, The Ultimate Thayer. He then presented Magic History Moment # 94 on Jose Frakson, The Man of 100 Cigarettes. Frakson was born Jose Jimenez Savilla in Madrid in 1891. He achieved worldwide success on vaudeville and night club stages. Frakson is best known for his cigarette act. • Close-Up Magic Materials/Michael J. Amico Papers Inventory
Brian Sutton-Smith Library and Archives of Play Close-Up Magic/Amico Papers Inventory Close-Up Magic Materials/Michael J. Amico Papers Processed by: Cheri Crist (2007); inventory revised by Doris C. Sturzenberger Custodial History: The Library of The Strong acquired this group of papers related to the practice of close-up magic from Lars Sandel in July 1992. Sandel provided a comprehensive list of items included in the collection; however, there was no indication or record of the manner by which he came to acquire the items, nor is there any specific mention of the papers of Michael Amico. The original lot included books, booklets, and serials, which were added to the Brian Sutton-Smith Library and Archives of Play. The lot also included three-dimensional items, which were transferred to the Museum of Play collections. The papers had been divided into two boxes: one that contained personal papers of Michael J. Amico, a local, semi-professional, close-up magician; the other, a large number of magic trick instructions, along with a few items that seemed to relate directly or indirectly to Michael Amico. Some of the Amico-related items in the second box were from the Society of American Magicians (both the local and national groups), of which Amico was a member, while others had the word Amico written on them. One item mentions Bob Follmer, who was a friend of Amico. It is unknown how the two boxes are related. Because the same Object ID (93.7077) had been assigned to both sets of papers, the processor made the decision to integrate the two collections into one combined collection.

  • With Jay Scott Berry
Anthony Darkstone Brook In Conversation With Jay Scott Berry I met Jay several years ago in Europe at a Convention. I had heard of him and his FISM ranking but had never seen him perform. I stood at the back of a large crowd that was gathered at his Dealer’s table and watched intently. He intrigued me so much that I decided not to go to a lecture I had planned on attending but stayed there for another 50 minutes to watch him perform what I thought was the closest thing to real Magic I had ever seen. I later found out that Mark Wilson had actually said those words in public about Jay. Incidentally, back in 2000 in Dallas, Texas, I was having lunch with Scott Wells, Simon Lovell, Mark Wilson and Nani Darnell, and we got to discussing those who exhibited great skill. Guess whose name cropped up as the one Magician whose consummate skill was consistently flawless? Later that night at The Convention, where I had first met Jay, I watched in total amazement his flawless performance on stage. I became a huge fan and in my review I wrote, "A true visionary. A man who has gone beyond the boundaries. There are only a handful of magicians who are masters of the Art. This man is one of them. Do whatever you have to do to get to one of his lectures or one of his shows." “Phipps” AKA Heinz Philipp, long time friend and Mentor to Siegfried & Roy shared a similar opinion. He said, "Over the past 70 years, I have seen almost every great magician in the world.
