However, in historical literature on consumption, a discourse on consumption patterns in the South is conspicuous by its absence. The same bias predominates in the narratives of commodities that went global during the colonial period. When studied in the context of the North, these commodities are considered inseparable from the rise of “modernity”. Consumption of commodities like coffee and tea was part of the multifaceted process that encompassed the notions of nation/empire, transformed the nature of labour and exchange, introduced industrial time and modern education, transforming at the same time work discipline, practices of gender, class, personal relations and leisure. In societies experiencing the “industrious revolution”, coffee and tea formed part of a regular diet following an increase in the family income. Consumption of coffee in public spaces led, we are told, to the development of a new social space between the private and the governmental. By providing space for discussions on new socio-political issues of “common concern” outside the realm 2 of the government authority, coffee houses led to the emergence of the “bourgeois public sphere” in the North. In sum, hot beverages like coffee in the North are associated with modern identity and modern society. The historiography of commodities like coffee and tea has a different connotation in the context of the South. While the history of coffee in India has escaped serious scholarly attention almost altogether, research on tea has been focused on the large scale production of this export commodity involving the appropriation of land, resources, ecological disorder, displacement of indigenous communities, large scale migration of social groups and the emergence of coolie- labour. The modernity of the North is thus usually linked only with the processes of colonial exploitation of land, resources and labour in the South. By focusing on the public consumption of coffee in India in the twentieth century, the project questions the validity of the notion of a spatial North-South division in the consumption of global commodities. As in many other countries growing agricultural commodities for markets in the North, a considerable part of the coffee grown in India is consumed locally. Literature suggests that the consumption of coffee emerged as a marker of a distinct life style by the beginning of the twentieth century in parts of south India – not altogether dissimilar from developments in eighteenth-century Europe. The outlets of the Indian Coffee House in different cities countrywide in the 1960s and 1970s formed a distinct part of urban space where individuals gathered, relaxed or debated over a cup of coffee outside home and away from work. Currently, various MNCs from the North compete with indigenous operators for a share of the coffee retail sector, and all prognoses predict a growth of this market. When did coffee houses emerge in India? How did they affect the culture of coffee consumption? Who were, and are, the people who visit coffee houses and cafes? What were the social functions of coffee-drinking in these public spaces? How is this public site of consumption organized? The project seeks to answer these questions by collecting quantitative and qualitative data on the public consumption of coffee through archival research and oral history. The findings of this research will be analyzed with reference to the sociological theory of consumption, particularly as exemplified in the work of Thorstein Veblen and Pierre Bourdieu. Plan of procedure and time schedule The project will be realized over a period of two years. Both qualitative and quantitative data are required for a reconstruction of the social history of coffee. • Year 1, months 1-3 will be devoted to the further development of conceptual and methodological research tools in the context of the CeMIS research group on distribution networks and consumption. These months will also be dedicated to the preparation of fieldwork. 3 • Year 1, Months 4-10 will focus on field research on the Indian Coffee House, a retail chain with nearly 400 outlets all over India. Special attention will be paid to West Bengal, Delhi and Kerala. As noted above, the Coffee House in Calcutta and Delhi has been at the forefront of socio-economic and political movements in the country. Kerala has the largest number of outlets (51) of ICH in the country, all managed by the Coffee House Workers’ Co-operative. Further, a number of Coffee Houses in different states (Calcutta, Chandigarh, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and a few in Kerala e.g.) will be studied. Visit will be paid to sites where recently a Coffee House outlet has made place for a different, new type of café (e.g. Jabalpur). Literati and professionals who frequented Coffee House in their youth, together with Coffee House regulars, and ex- and present workers will be interviewed. At the same time written and visual documents pertaining to the history of coffee and Coffee House will be collected from works of regional literature and newspapers, if necessary with translator’s help. • Year 1-2, months 11-13 will be spent in studying the archives of the ABCTCL (Bangalore), HLL (Mumbai), and the Tata Group (Bangalore and Calcutta) in order to find the strategy these companies have adopted for marketing filtered and instant coffee, both packaged and at retail outlets. In addition, newspaper advertisements, bill boards and television commercials will be studied. This will help us to compare the distribution network and marketing strategy of the new cafés vis-à-vis those of the Indian Coffee House. • Months 14-24 will be spent in preparing a manuscript when findings of the archival and oral research will be analyzed on the basis of the theoretical framework set out above. • Month 24 will also be dedicated to the organization of the International Workshop on “The Social History of Consumption in Modern South Asia”. .

Harikrishnan Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland, [email protected] Abstract: Communism arrived in the south Indian state of Kerala in the early twentieth century at a time when the matrilineal systems that governed caste-Hindu relations were crumbling quickly. For a large part of the twentieth century, the Communist Party – specifically the Communist Party of India (Marxist) – played a major role in navigating Kerala society through a developmental path based on equality, justice and solidarity. Following Lefebvre’s conceptualisation of (social) space, this paper explores how informal social spaces played an important role in communicating ideas of communism and socialism to the masses. Early communists used rural libraries and reading rooms, tea-shops, public grounds and wall-art to engage with and communicate communism to the masses. What can the efforts of the early communists in Kerala tell us about the potential for communicative socialism? How can we adapt these experiences in the twenty-first century? How did indigenous capital respond to the plantation sector? Taking a petition submitted by some European coffee planters of the Mysore Planters’ Association in December 1864 as a point of departure this article attempts at answering these questions by analysing the initial phase of the coffee industry in Mysore and Coorg in Karnataka. The petitioners claimed that the tax they paid on coffee was much higher than coffee planters elsewhere in India had to pay. The authorities concerned sought experts’ opinion on the petition, and came to the conclusion that the claims made in the petition were baseless. By comparing the role of the European and Indian enterprise in the coffee industry, the article contributes to the ongoing discourses on dual economy and the response of indigenous capital in the face of Western capital. Exotic wildlife also thrives in the hills, for those who need more than just the smell of cardamom growing to get their juices flowing. This flourishing land isn’t good at keeping its secret: adventurers and traders have been in on it for years. The serene Fort Cochin pays homage to its colonial past, each building whispering a tale of Chinese visitors, Portuguese traders, Jewish settlers, Syrian Christians and Muslim mer- chants. Yet even with its colonial distractions, Kerala manages to cling to its vibrant traditions: Kathakali – a blend of religious play and dance; kalarippayat – a gravity-defying martial art; and theyyam – a trance-induced ritual. Mixed with some of the most tastebud-tingling cuisine in India and you can imagine how hard it will be to leave before you even get here.
