De wandeling is 2,2 km lang en duurt ongeveer 1,5 uur. Neem aan de rotonde bij Sint-Jacobs de Ottogracht. Sla de eerste straat rechtsaf. Dit is de Baudelostraat. Volg deze straat tot aan de Leie en sla linksaf. Zo kom je op de Baudelokaai en de Minnemeers. Met het openbaar vervoer: - vanaf station Gent-Dampoort: bus 3, 38 en 39 naar Sint-Jacobs; - vanaf station Gent-Sint-Pieters: bus 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 76, 77 en 78 naar Gent-Zuid, verder met bus 5 naar Sint-Jacobs. Aan de rotonde neem je de Bibliotheekstraat. Je wandelt door het Baudelopark en volgt de Baudelokaai (naast de Leie) naar links. MIAT 1 Minnemeers 9 Het MIAT werd in 1994 geopend in de voormalige katoenspinnerij Desmet-Guéquier en is gewijd aan de geschiedenis van de textielnijverheid en de industriële samenleving. Het bestaande hoofdgebouw dateert uit de periode 1905-1912. Het werd gebouwd naar het voor- beeld van de katoenfabrieken in het Engelse Manchester, met de typische ‘brandvrije’ troggewelven en gietijzeren liggers en kolommen. Tussen de Minnemeers en de Oudevest, de straat aan de achterkant van het museum, lag op het einde van de 18e eeuw een van de vroegst geïndustrialiseerde gebieden van Gent. Vanaf het begin van de 19e eeuw werden de kleinere eigendommen, zowel woningen als ateliers, ge- leidelijk aan verdrongen door kleine fabrieken. De basis werd gelegd voor industriële schaalvergroting. In 1905 leidde dat tot de fusie van al die bedrijven in de fabriek Desmet-Guéquier, een mechanische katoenspinnerij met een oppervlakte van 3500 m². Tegenwoordig wordt de bedrijfshal gebruikt als tentoonstellingsruimte. De weidse vensterpartijen, de monumentale architectuur en de ruime zalen van de voormalige katoenfabriek zorgen voor een prachtig licht- en schaduwspel met de tentoon- gestelde machines. Bovendien biedt het museum een prachtige uitzicht: vanop de bovenste verdieping kan je genieten van een van de meest spectaculaire panorama’s over het historische centrum van Gent. De honderden arbeiders die hier vroeger werkten, zullen zich weinig druk gemaakt hebben over de lichtinval en het uitzicht. Het labeur in de mechanische spinnerijen was hard en ongezond – een vruchtbare voedingsbodem voor het ontluikende socialisme (zie kader). Je wandelt via de trap naar de tuin van het museum, voor de inkom. 19e-eeuwse arbeidsomstandig­­ heden In de mechanische vlasspinnerij was de toestand ronduit verschrikkelijk. In de natte continus (gemecha- niseerde spinmolens) zorgde de vochtige hitte voor een ziekmakende omgeving. De vrouwen moesten vlasdraad spinnen met behulp van water met een temperatuur van 50 tot 80 graden Celsius. De dampen condenseerden en vielen neer op de arbeidsters, die met de handen voortdurend in het warme water en het slijk wroetten. Zo kregen ze kloven die de tijd niet kregen om te genezen en dus gingen zweren. Dat werd ‘waterkanker’ genoemd. Allerlei kwakzalverijen – zoals erop urineren – moesten de pijn verlichten. Rond 1850 werkten de Gentse textielarbeiders 80 tot 100 uur per week in mensonwaardige omstandighe- den. De fabrieken draaiden 14 uur per dag, plus 9 uur op zaterdag. Op zondag werd er 3 uur onbezoldigd gewerkt om de werkplaatsen en machines te reinigen. In 1897 kon een kind met het loon van 9 uur wer- ken één brood kopen. He became dictator, at first as head of the Consulate (1799-1804), then as “Emperor of the French” under the First French Empire (1804- 1815). Napoleon I’s type of politics (popularly called Bonapartism) skillfully used the various class struggles in France to perpetuate his own dictatorial rule and dynasty while also building a military-bureaucratic caste that satisfied the class interests of the old and emergent elites.

His answer was stark: ‘No. I do not think it can.’ He then posed and answered a second question: ‘Can socialism work? Of course it can.’1 Perhaps the Austrian-born economist’s pessimism was simply the effect of teaching at Harvard. (By temperament a conservative who was hostile to the New Deal and allergic to Keynesianism, Schumpeter gradually tired of the ‘cocoon’ on the banks of the Charles, and came very close to moving to Yale on the eve of World War II.)2 Yet Schumpeter offered four plausible reasons for believing that socialism’s prospects would be brighter than capitalism’s in the second half of the twentieth century, even if he signaled his strong preference for capitalism in his ironical discussion of socialism. First, he suggested, capitalism’s greatest strength—its propensity for ‘creative destruction’—is also a source of weakness. Disruption may be the process that clears out the obsolescent and fosters the advent of the new, but precisely for that reason it can never be universally loved. Second, capitalism itself tends towards oligopoly, not perfect competition. The more concentrated economic power becomes, the harder it is to legitimize the system, especially in America, where ‘big business’ tends to get confused with ‘monopoly.’ Third, capitalism ‘creates, educates and subsidizes a vested interest in social unrest’—namely, intellectuals.

    JAARVERSLAG 2014 I. De collectie is uitgebreid met nieuwe domeinen en is vervolledigd op de terreinen waarop Amsab-ISG al langer actief is. 1.1. Archieven en collecties van actoren in de domeinen met betrekking tot de missie van Amsab-ISG, zijn uitgebreid, aangevuld en vervolledigd. Amsab-ISG heeft hiertoe nauw contacten onderhouden met archiefvormers. Medewerkers van Amsab-ISG onderhouden contacten met vertegenwoordigers van de belangrijkste archiefvormers. Voor sp.a, Groen, ABVV, NVSM, de milieubeweging en verschillende humanitaire organisaties werden contactpersonen aangeduid. In het kader van 50 jaar Turkse en Marokkaanse migratie werd intensief aan netwerking gedaan binnen verschillende migrantengemeenschappen en organisaties. Erfgoed dat voor diverse projecten in het kader van deze herdenking werd verzameld, werd in Amsab-ISG ondergebracht en geregistreerd. Amsab-ISG heeft een scherp collectieprofiel en heeft een duidelijke plaats ingenomen bij de uitbouw van een ‘collectieplan Vlaanderen’. Amsab-ISG heeft hiervoor afgestemd met de Vlaams ingedeelde culturele archiefinstellingen. Hendrik Ollivier, hoofd Collectie, maakt deel uit van de werkgroep Collectieplan Vlaanderen, gecoördineerd door Archiefbank Vlaanderen. 2 II. Amsab-ISG heeft de zichtbaarheid van de collectie verhoogd. 2.1. Het overzicht van de collectie is online consulteerbaar en doorzoekbaar gemaakt. Vanaf begin 2014 is het collectieoverzicht online raadpleegbaar en doorzoekbaar. Het biedt een overzicht van alle archieffondsen en collecties die op Amsab-ISG worden bewaard, ook de fondsen die nog niet ontsloten zijn en niet doorzoekbaar via de catalogus. Dit kadert in onze politiek van een zo open mogelijk collectiebeleid.

I had been struggling to collect my thoughts; thoughts concerning what to devote my thesis to and many hours of blood, and tears. Indeed, there had been times where I felt as though I could not finish my work. Thus, discussions, laughter, and frustration have enwrapped me for two years. And now, finally, I can end six years of education, knowing I have created something that I can be proud of. So, as I lay down my virtual pen for the last time – at least for the time being – I want to extend my humblest ‘thank you’ to all of those alluring and inspiring people that have been pushing me towards my goal. Mother, who despite not fully knowing what I am writing about, have supported my passions since my teenage years.     The Internationale Words by Eugene Pottier (1871) Music by Pierre Degeyter (1888) Piano Arrangement by Jerry Engelbach (2001) Degeyter’s original piano arrangement of The Internationale (if indeed it was by him) is harmonically tame, so I wrote this one for myself. I wanted to avoid the stodginess of other versions but keep a 19th-century classical feeling. Recordings on the Web tend to be didactic (a sin in a song about revolution) or (shudder) pseudo-folky. The best singing I have heard has been by Marxist groups at street rallies. You don’t see too many of these in the United States. The two versions in this file are in A Major and Bb Major. My chord symbols are the basic harmony and do not reflect all the changes in the arrangement. The lyrics I use are but one of many different versions available online. This is an Adobe Acrobat PDF file. The original Finale 2002 files are on Coda Music’s Finale Showcase. Just input “The Internationale” in the Search box: http://www.codamusic.com/coda/fs_home.asp. Renard The Report on Deep-Sea Deposits based on the specimens collected during the voyage o f H.M.S. Challenger in the years 1872 to 1876, signed by John Murray - one of the Naturalists o f the Expedition - and Rev. A.F. Renard - Professor o f Geology and Mineralogy in the University o f Ghent - was published in 1891. This report, which is considered as the founding work of marine geology, may be regarded as a team work implying three excep­ tional scientists: Sir Wyville Thomson, John Murray and Alphonse- François Renard. This paper focuses on the role of Alphonse-François Renard, who was ciuator at the Musée Royal d’Histoire Naturelle in Brus­ sels at the time of the initial contacts with the Challenger Office in Edin­ burgh. In 1888, Renard was appointed professor of geology and mineralogy at Ghent University. While several biographies have already narrated Renard’s life, a few key moments remained elusive. Some newly consulted documents, such as a set of 52 letters of Alphonse-François Renard to Sir Archibald Geikie kept at the Library of the University of Edinbiugh, confronted with archives in Brussels and available literature, shed some new light e.g. on Renard’s early discovery of the world of geological science at the Abbey of Maria Laach in the Eifel and on the chronology and circumstances of his stays in Austria and Scotland.
