MEDFORD BEER WEEK ORGANIZERS CHRIS DENNETT AND NICK ELLIS. CREDIT: MEDFORD BEER WEEK

In its ninth year, both organizers, Chris Dennett and Nick Ellis have watched Medford Beer Week turn into a “metric week” (that is, 10 days) with more events than the year before and even a “bonus day.” Dennett explains their goal is to present the entire ecosystem of beers in the region. “We want to create motion between bars and restaurants and create awareness about craft beers,” he says. Here is the Messenger’s Picks from each day of Beer Week: Thursday June 6: 7th Annual Ring The Bull Tournament at Opposition Brewing: 6 – 8 pm. The “Sharp Shooter” dog tag is coveted, so practice up and see if you have what it takes to beat the defending champion. Discounted pints for all participants. Friday, June 7: Hat Press and Brew with Ninkasi Brewing at Beerworks Medford: 5 – 9 pm. Choose a hat and a design, and they’ll make you a hat right then and there, for free. Special pricing for Ninkasi beers. Saturday, June 8: Drink and Draw Father’s Day Cards with Coldfire Brewing @ Beerworks: 5 – 9 pm Sunday, June 9: Bring your Birkenstocks, Grateful Dead Open Mic at Osmo’s Alehouse: 6 – 9 pm. Jam with a house band, or get up, plug in, and play your own cover tune. Monday, June 10: Skee Ball Tournament with 10 Barrel at Beerworks Medford: 5 – 9 pm. Join 10 Barrel for a bracket tournament, with prizes for winners and special pricing on 10 Barrel beers. Bracket begins filling in at 5 pm. Tuesday, June 11: Bots, Beer, and the Rise of Invention with CBD Joe’s Food Truck at Osmo’s Alehouse: 5 – 8 pm. Beer while building with robotics? Too geeky not to love. If you sign up for your very first library card, your beer is on the house. Or get Happy Hour prices when you show up with your library card. Double down on the geek. Sometimes they just play and they’re good for watching thermals, but other times it’s kind of like you’re in a dog fight. You have to keep them from getting above or behind you. You’re turning, they’re turning, until you wind up landing and the eagle flies away.” The Applegate Open is the reincarnation of the Rat Race, a paragliding competition which had been running for 15 years before the organizers retired. It had given paragliding pilots the rare opportunity to compete in their sport. Applegate Open creators Dan and Mary Beth Wells felt, “If we didn’t step in and do the event, we were afraid there wouldn’t be any competitions in the U.S. at all. The Applegate Open is one of only two competitions in the US which determine the national championship team, so it’s a big deal for pilots,” relates paraglider pilot and event patriarch, Dan Wells. Although the sport was originally created by mountaineers needing to get to the ground below in a hurry, these days it’s all about staying aloft and enjoying the view, “I guess a good flight is if you’re up for an hour or and an hour and a half and then you know, the longest flights, you fly cross country. You can be up for as many as 12 hours. You can legally fly from sunrise to sunset. Long-distance flights, like 500 kilometers, can be done with prevailing winds and good thermal production,” explains Wells. In the early days of the sport, “Retrieve Coordinator” Mary Beth Wells would drive from the launch towards the goal where she thought pilots may have landed, and do blind callouts over the radio, as it is her job to find the pilots who were forced to land before getting to goal. Wells explains, “We would just drive out towards the goal and on the radio I would be calling out ‘Woodrat pilot, this is retrieve’ and by the end of the week, my voice was shot. But now it’s much more targeted and that’s also much more fuel efficient. Something else that happened last year, which was really awesome was because people read some of the articles about the event, when they saw a paraglider walking along the road with their pack they picked them up and gave them a ride back to HQ.” 22 / WWW.ROGUEVALLEYMESSENGER.COM JUNE 6 - JULY 17 , 2019 / THE ROGUE VALLEY MESSENGER / 23 FREE WILL ASTROLOGY Week of June 6 SUDOKU GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Some birds can him, telling Planck, “In this field, almost everything SUDOKU NO. 226 - VERY HARD fly for days without coming down to earth.
