5/28/14 It’s all about relationships: Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Start Their Ministries Minnesota was still a territory in 1851 when Bishop Joseph Cretin decided some of the Native Americans and immigrants of his new Roman Catholic Diocese would benefit from education and other services. Familiar with the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in France, which was founded in the 17th century to do “all of which woman is capable, and which will most benefit the dear neighbor” [Primitive Constitution], he decided a direct appeal would be best. Bishop Cretin traveled down the Mississippi River by steamboat to the village of Carondelet, a small town five miles south of St. Louis, Missouri where the sisters had settled in 1836. His request was successful. With ice forming along the Mississippi’s shore, four Sisters of St. Joseph from Carondelet, Missouri, stepped off a steamboat at the St. Paul landing on November 3, 1851. “The group,…accustomed to makeshift living conditions ever since their arrival in St. Louis,” was not surprised by their new quarters. The habitation awaiting them in St. Paul had been the Bishop’s house, “a shanty adjoining the log chapel of St. Paul, the first cathedral. St. Joseph’s Academy was opened [in the chapel] the second week of November, 1851, only a few days after the arrival of the four sisters.” By the end of their first year, Mother St. John wrote: “There were eighty-seven pupils, seventeen of them boarders, of Canadian and Indian descent. Father Larry Snyder reminded graduates they have the opportunity to build up a society that respects the dignity of CONTENTS all people and build up the kingdom of justice and peace. The Filicide Enigma: Was Gen. Henry Sibley’s Son Ha nged in Ma nkato? By Walt Bachman Introduction For the first 20 years of Henry Milord’s life, he and Henry Sibley both lived in the small village of Mendota, Minnesota, where, especially during Milord’s childhood, they enjoyed a close relationship. But when the paths of Sibley and Milord crossed in dramatic fashion in the fall of 1862, the two men had lived apart for years. During that period of separation, in 1858 Sibley ascended to the peak of his power and acclaim as Minnesota’s first governor, presiding over the affairs of the booming new state from his historic stone house in Mendota. As recounted in Rhoda Gilman’s excellent 2004 biography, Henry Hastings Sibley: Divided Heart, Sibley had occupied key positions of leadership since his arrival in Minnesota in 1834, managing the regional fur trade and representing Minnesota Territory in Congress before his term as governor. He was the most important figure in 19th century Minnesota history. As Sibley was governing the new state, Milord, favoring his Dakota heritage on his mother’s side, opted to live on the new Dakota reservation along the upper Minnesota River and was, according to his mother, “roaming with the Sioux.” Financially, Sibley was well-established from his years in the fur trade, and especially from his receipt of substantial sums (at the Dakotas’ expense) as proceeds from 1851 treaties. 1 Milord proba bly quickly spe nt all of the far more modest benefit from an earlier treaty to which he, as a mixed-blood Dakota, was entitled. -

The pandemic, together with the social unrest in the wake of George Floyd’s unjust death, have taken a heavy toll. At the same time, I’m very proud of how our Catholic community has responded. In the midst of dual crises, in a time of fear and uncertainty, we have come together to help our neighbors and support Catholic organizations. Only together can we achieve success, as Archbishop Hebda says, “On our own, there’s little that we’re able to accomplish. It’s only with collaboration, involving the thinking and generosity of many folks that we’re able to put together a successful plan.” The Catholic Community Foundation of Minnesota (CCF) has never been better prepared to meet the challenges of the moment. Within days of the suspension of public Masses in March, CCF established onlyCOMMUNION IN THE MIDST OF CRISIS the Minnesota Catholic Relief Fund. Immediately, hundreds of generous people made extraordinary donations to support our local Catholic community. Shortly thereafter, CCF began deploying monies to parishes and schools in urgent need. This was all possible because CCF had the operational and relational infrastructure in place to act swiftly: the connections, the trust, the expertise, and the overwhelming support of our donors. CCF has proven it’s just as capable of serving the long-term needs of our Catholic community. together Through our Legacy Fund and a variety of endowments, individuals can support Catholic ministries in perpetuity, while parishes partner with CCF to safeguard their long-term financial stability. -

At the time this cover illustration was drawn, the nation was in the midst of building the vast Interstate Highway system that was largely paid for with federal money. This illustration conveys an idealized view of how the new freeways would safely and efficiently transport automobiles and trucks into and out of a city. Plans that called for the construction of an interchange on I-94 in St. Paul at Prior Avenue produced plenty of controversy and called into question some of the underlying assumptions behind these new roadways. Most analyses of public radio listening examine the performance of individual stations within this large mix, the contributions of specific national programs, or aggregate numbers for the system as a whole. This report takes a different approach. Through an extensive, multi-year study of 228 stations that generate about 80% of public radio’s audience, we review patterns of listening to groups of stations categorized by the formats that they present. We find that stations that pursue different format strategies – news, classical, jazz, AAA, and the principal combinations of these – have experienced significantly different patterns of audience growth in recent years and important differences in key audience behaviors such as loyalty and time spent listening. This quantitative study complements qualitative research that the Station Resource Group, in partnership with Public Radio Program Directors, and others have pursued on the values and benefits listeners perceive in different formats and format combinations. Key findings of The Public Radio Format Study include: • In a time of relentless news cycles and a near abandonment of news by many commercial stations, public radio’s news and information stations have seen a 55% increase in their average audience from Spring 1999 to Fall 2004. -

Director: Kevin W. Irwin, S.T.D. The Missa Chrismatis (“Chrism Mass”), the annual ritual Mass that celebrates the blessing of the sacramental oils ordinarily held on Holy Thursday morning, was revised in accordance with the decrees of Vatican II and promulgated by the authority of Pope Paul VI and inserted in the newly promulgated Missale Romanum in 1970. Also revised, in tandem with the Missa Chrismatis, is the Ordo Benedicendi Oleum Catechumenorum et Infirmorum et Conficiendi Chrisma (Ordo), and promulgated editio typica on December 3, 1970. Based upon the scholarly consensus of liturgical theologians that liturgical events are acts of theology, this study seeks to delineate the liturgical theology of the Missa Chrismatis by applying the method of liturgical theology proposed by Kevin Irwin in Context and Text. A critical study of the prayers, both ancient and new, for the consecration of Chrism and the blessing of the oils of the sick and of catechumens reveals rich theological data. In general it can be said that the fundamental theological principle of the Missa Chrismatis is initiatory and consecratory. The study delves into the history of the chrismal liturgy from its earliest foundations as a Mass in the Gelasianum Vetus, including the chrismal consecration and blessing of the oils during the missa in cena domini, recorded in the Hadrianum, Ordines Romani, and Pontificales Romani of the Middle Ages, through the reforms of 1955-56, 1965 and, finally, 1970. -

At $358 million in assets, the Catholic Community Foundation of Minnesota (CCF) is the largest of its kind in the nation, but we don’t believe that’s the true measure of our success. From the beginning, CCF has engaged philanthropic Catholics and stewarded their charitable giving. As the years have passed, we’ve accumulated more than assets.
