Abstract The Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus is a Critically Endangered species endemic to the Balearic Islands, subject to a severe decline that could lead to the extinction of the species within three generations (Oro et al. 2004). Predation by introduced mammals is considered the main threat facing the species at its breeding grounds, and therefore conservation action is required along with subsequent monitoring in a species where such information is lacking. In order to assess the long-term impact of a rodent eradication project on the breeding success of the species on Sa Dragonera island, a series of study plots were established in April 2013. A survey was carried out to establish the minimum number of known Apparently Occupied Sites (AOS) within each plot. All potential nest sites within each plot were sampled for the presence of a bird(s) using a combination of methods: (i) tape playback, (ii) physical sighting (by eye or with an endoscope) and (iii) obvious signs of occupation. -

Abstract The Balearic Archipelago is one of the richest European regions in terms of marine animal species diversity and is characterized by a wide range of ecosystem types (e.g. maërl beds, Leptometra beds, soft red algae communities, Posidonia meadows, etc) (Aguilar et al.,2007b) . Some of these communities are considered rare on a European scale. The area’s complex oceanography results in high levels of productivity, reflected by its importance as a feeding ground for a wide range of species, including fin and sperm whales, loggerhead turtles and as a crucial spawning ground for threatened Bluefin tuna. The area is also an important breeding ground for the endemic Balearic shearwater. Introduction In 2006 Greenpeace published a proposal for a regional network of large-scale marine reserves with the aim of protecting the full spectrum of life in the Mediterranean (see Figure 1) (Greenpeace 2006). -

The ocean has a vast potential for generating energy and therefore, the marine renewable energies are included in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These energies include wave, tidal, marine currents, ocean thermal, and osmotic. Moreover, it can also be included wind, solar, geothermal and biomass powers, which their main use is onshore, but in the near future their use at sea may be considered. The manuscript starts with a state-of-the-art review of the abovementioned marine renewable energy resources worldwide. The paper continues with a case study focused on the Spanish coast, divided into six regions: (I) Cantabrian, (II) Galician, (III) South Atlantic, (IV) Canary Islands, (V) Southern Mediterranean, and (VI) Northern Mediterranean. The results show that: (1) areas I and II are suitable for offshore wind, wave and biomass; (2) areas III and V are suitable for offshore wind, marine current and offshore solar; area IV is suitable for offshore wind, ocean wave and offshore solar; (3) and area VI is suitable for offshore wind, osmotic and offshore solar. -

Island Studies Journal, Vol. 12, No. 1, pp. 243-254 Toponymy and nissology: an approach to defining the Balearic Islands’ geographical and cultural character Antoni Ordinas Garau Universitat de les Illes Balears, Spain [email protected] and Jaume Binimelis Sebastián Universitat de les Illes Balears, Spain [email protected] ABSTRACT: The cultural identity of each of the larger islands that make up the Balearic archipelago is shown through the local geographical terminology and toponymy, which are results of the successive overlapping of languages and cultures brought to the islands by various peoples throughout history. By classifying and analyzing the toponymy and geographical terminology of the Balearic Islands, unique particularities can be found. There are differences between each of the islands, as well as with non-island territory, as a result of centuries of isolation. This same isolation has also led to the preservation of terminology and other linguistic aspects, and has created an endemic culture. This is true not only because the world is full of islands (Baldacchino, 2006), but because of the valuable role that they play when considering any of the three lines of research suggested by King (2010). -

PLAZA ESPAÑA-LEGANITOS, 47 28013 MADRID SPAIN +34 911.440.880 www.oceana.org COMENTARIOS Y PROPUESTAS DE OCEANA A LOS BORRADORES DE SEIS PLANES DE GESTIÓN EN EL MARCO DE LA RED NATURA 2000 DE LAS ILLES BALEARS 21 de febrero de 2014 CONSIDERACIONES GENERALES Oceana, atendiendo a los objetivos que rigen a esta organización, se centra solamente en la parte marina de los diferentes Lugares de Importancia Comunitaria (LIC) de los cuales se están elaborando sus respectivos planes de gestión. En primer lugar, Oceana quiere mostrar su preocupación por la deficiente información que contienen los borradores iniciales de los planes de gestión presentados hasta la fecha, lo cual dificulta hacer aportaciones ya que falta una base adecuada sobre la que trabajar. De una adecuada información de partida depende la elaboración de un plan de gestión adecuado para cada LIC, y por ello resulta preocupante que la información ofrecida no sea la correcta. De manera general: - Se han detectado graves errores en el listado de las especies y los hábitats marinos presentes en los diferentes LICs. No sólo por el hecho de omitirlos en algunos casos sino porque la información que se ofrece de su distribución, características, amenazas y presiones o estado de conservación entre otros, es errónea, está desactualizada y/o no tiene en cuenta la situación concreta del LIC. - Se debería tener en cuenta la cartografía más actualizada disponible para cada LIC y en el caso de que no exista, entre las medidas de gestión se debería contemplar como objetivo prioritario la incorporación de una cartografía adecuada. -
