For contact details see back inside cover of the Bulletin The Ricardian Bulletin is produced by the Bulletin Editorial Committee, Printed by Micropress Printers Ltd. © Richard III Society, 2011 From the Chairman n March, I referred to the tragic flooding in Australia, since when we have had the equally I tragic earthquake in New Zealand and the tsunami in Japan. We have members in both countries and thankfully, as far as we know, all are safe. (I know that one member in Christchurch NZ was actually rescued from one of the buildings that collapsed.) Here in the United Kingdom, of course, we have just had a splendid Royal Wedding, with all the pageantry and celebrations to enjoy, and this edition includes another recipe from Tig Lang, this time for ‗Apple Juice fit for a Duchess‘, which somehow seems very topical. In April, we had another successful study weekend in York, this time looking at the de la Pole family. In this issue, we give details of two of the talks given, with others to follow in the future. As well as Tig‘s recipe, this edition also comes with the usual comprehensive range of news and reviews to make for great reading. We continue our commemoration of the centenary of Paul Murray Kendall‘s birth with a report on the visit to Bosworth by his daughters Callie and Gillian, who also provide some fascinating responses to the questions we asked them. The importance of Kendall‘s biography of King Richard can never be overstated. With its heavy reliance on primary sources, it made a significant contribution to the arguments for a favorable view of Richard. It is a pleasure, therefore, to announce that the Society will be providing a memorial bench at Bosworth in Kendall‘s memory. This will be in place for the battle‘s anniversary in August and we are hopeful that Callie and Gillian will be able to come over for its unveiling. It is with much sadness that we record the deaths of Brian Moorhen and Peter Lee. Brian was our Membership Manager for a number of years and Peter was a former Chairman of the London Branch. Our sympathies go to Wendy Moorhen and Diana Lee and all their families. Diana stepped down from her role as Business Manager recently and we are grateful for her work over the past two years. We advertised the post in the last Bulletin and I am very pleased to welcome Stephen York who answered the call and has now taken it on. I am also pleased to note that the Ricardian Chronicle Project is making good progress with Toni Mount and Helen Challinor joining its management team. Let me encourage members who want to get involved in research to sign up for the project. It gives me great pleasure to announce that we have a new edition of Ricardian Britain (see page 4). The first edition came out as long ago as 1968, and we acknowledge the pioneering contribution of Carolyn Hammond and Val Alliez, the founding editors. This edition is on-line as part of the website, which will give it much greater flexibility and enable us to make changes as they become necessary. The bi-annual Australasian Convention meets in Melbourne this August and we wish our members down under well and look forward to hearing all about it in December‘s Bulletin. There will, of course, be many Society events over the coming months, including the annual Bosworth memorial service at Sutton Cheney. It will be the five hundred and twenty-sixth anniversary of the battle, and I hope to meet many of you there on Bosworth Sunday, 21 August. 2 Society News and Notices Richard III Society Members’ Day and Annual General Meeting Saturday 1 October 2011 Notice is hereby given that the 2011 Annual General Meeting of the Richard III Society will be held on Saturday 1 October 2011 at the School or Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), Malet Street (off Russell Square), London WC1H 0XG. The formal business of the meeting will include reports from the Society‘s officers, the presentation of the annual accounts of the Society to 31 March 2011 and the election of the Executive Committee for the coming year. Exact timings for the day will be notified in the September Bulletin. Nominations for the Executive Committee should be sent to the Joint Secretaries, Susan and David Wells, by post to 23 Ash Rise, Halstead, Essex CO9 1RD, to be received not later than Friday 16 September 2011. All nominations must be proposed and seconded and accepted in writing by the nominee. A pro-forma for this purpose can be downloaded from the Society‘s website. Resolutions for the Agenda, also proposed and seconded, should reach the Joint Secretaries at the address and by the same date as set out above. Alternatively, these can be sent by email to: [email protected] by no later than Friday 16 September. If you intend to come to the event, please register your place by email to the Secretaries at the email address above or by completing and returning the booking form in this Bulletin by post. Call to Branches and Groups If your branch/group wishes to make a report at the AGM, please let the Joint Secretaries know in writing or via email by Friday 16 September, so that it can be included on the AGM agenda. Reports can be made in person by a Branch/Group representative or, for overseas branches/ groups or if no local representative is able to attend the AGM in person, a printed report may be supplied to be read out at the AGM. Reports should not exceed three minutes, and should consist of new material not previously reported verbally or in print. Refreshments Light refreshments will be provided by SOAS during the informal part of the day. The Society will be charged for this, but refreshment sales to individual attendees are not permitted. Therefore attendees will be asked to make a contribution towards the cost on arrival. Lunch will be by own arrangements and various local facilities are available within a very short walk of the venue. Please note that SOAS will not permit the bringing in of food for consumption on the premises. Inaugural Isolde Wigram Memorial Lecture This year the speaker will be the historian Dr David Starkey, who will be speaking on ‘A Wave of Pretenders? Yorkist sentiment in the reign of Henry VII’. 3 Registration of Attendance In view of our speaker this year, we are anticipating a higher than usual number of people wishing to attend. Our venue will hold in excess of 200 people, but there is a finite limit. Therefore it is vital that we know how many members are proposing to be there. For this reason, we are introducing the following system for registration: Everyone wishing to attend must register in advance, either by using the pro-forma in the centre pages of this Bulletin or by writing or emailing to the Joint Secretaries at the postal or email address shown on the inside back cover of the Bulletin. All registrations will be acknowledged. If you do not hear within two weeks, please contact Sue and Dave Wells to confirm that your place is reserved. If you have not registered and received a response, we regret that you will not be able to attend. Requests to attend will be dealt with on a ‗first come first served‘ basis. If the maximum limit is reached, a waiting list will be maintained. Full details and logistics for the Members’ Day and AGM will be published in the September Bulletin but, in the meantime, if you have any queries please get in touch with the Joint Secretaries: contact details as set out on the inside back cover of the Bulletin.

The earliest record of the coats is in the notebook of Richard Lee, Port­ cullis, who sketched them for his Gatherings of Oxfordshire on his Visitation of the County in 1574. It is now in the Bodleian (Wood MS. D. 14), and a page of it, showing some of the shields on the Ewelme tombs, was reproduced in facsimile in the Harleian Society'S volume of the Visitations of Oxfordshire.

    Sound recording in the British folk revival: ideology, discourse and practice, 1950–1975 Matthew Ord Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of PhD International Centre for Music Studies Newcastle University March 2017 Abstract Although recent work in record production studies has advanced scholarly understandings of the contribution of sound recording to musical and social meaning, folk revival scholarship in Britain has yet to benefit from these insights. The revival’s recording practice took in a range of approaches and contexts including radio documentary, commercial studio productions and amateur field recordings. This thesis considers how these practices were mediated by revivalist beliefs and values, how recording was represented in revivalist discourse, and how its semiotic resources were incorporated into multimodal discourses about music, technology and traditional culture. Chapters 1 and 2 consider the role of recording in revivalist constructions of traditional culture and working class communities, contrasting the documentary realism of Topic’s single-mic field recordings with the consciously avant-garde style of the BBC’s Radio Ballads. The remaining three chapters explore how the sound of recorded folk was shaped by a mutually constitutive dialogue with popular music, with recordings constructing traditional performance as an authentic social practice in opposition to an Americanised studio sound equated with commercial/technological mediation. As the discourse of progressive rock elevated recording to an art practice associated with the global counterculture, however, opportunities arose for the incorporation of rock studio techniques in the interpretation of traditional song in the hybrid genre of folk-rock. Changes in studio practice and technical experiments with the semiotics of recorded sound experiments form the subject of the final two chapters.

Signed Page 3 ABSTRACT This thesis considers the English parliamentary privilege of freedom from arrest (and other legal processes), 1603-1629. Although it is under-represented in the historiography, the early Stuart Commons cherished this particular privilege as much as they valued freedom of speech. Previously one of the privileges requested from the monarch at the start of a parliament, by the seventeenth century freedom from arrest was increasingly claimed as an ‘ancient’, ‘undoubted’ right that secured the attendance of members, and safeguarded their honour, dignity, property, and ‘necessary’ servants. Uncertainty over the status and operation of the privilege was a major contemporary issue, and this prompted key questions for research. First, did ill definition of the constitutional relationship between the crown and its prerogatives, and parliament and its privileges, lead to tensions, increasingly polemical attitudes, and a questioning of the royal prerogative? Where did sovereignty now lie? Second, was it important to maximise the scope of the privilege, if parliament was to carry out its business properly? Did ad hoc management of individual privilege cases nevertheless have the cumulative effect of enhancing the authority and confidence of the Commons? Third, to what extent was the exploitation or abuse of privilege an unintended consequence of the strengthening of the Commons’ authority in matters of privilege? Such matters are not treated discretely, but are embedded within chapters that follow a thematic, broadly chronological approach.

A bit of profile isn’t gonna hurt us — and I say us, the plural, for the folk scene — isn’t gonna hurt us at all.” In the same year as Carthy’s moment of recognition, something happened that did hurt the folk scene. Lal Waterson, Carthy’s sister-in- law, bandmate, near neighbor and close friend, died of cancer.

As followers in the Conqueror’s army the Wydeviles rose through service with the Mowbray family. If we accept the definition given by Crouch and Turner for a brief period of time the Wydeviles qualified as barons in the twelfth century. This position was not maintained. By the thirteenth century the family had split into two distinct branches. The senior line settled in Yorkshire while the junior branch settled in Northamptonshire. The junior branch of the family gradually rose to prominence in the county through service as escheator, sheriff and knight of the shire.

    Topic Records 80th Anniversary Start time: 8pm Running time: 2 hours 40 minutes with interval Please note all timings are approximate and subject to change Martin Aston discusses the history behind the world’s oldest independent label ahead of this collaborative performance. When Topic Records made its debut in 1939 with Paddy Ryan’s ‘The Man That Waters The Workers’ Beer’, an accordion-backed diatribe against capitalist businessmen who underpay their employees, it’s unlikely that anyone involved was thinking of the future – certainly not to 2019, when the label celebrates its 80th birthday. In any case, the future would have seemed very precarious in 1939, given the outbreak of World War II, during which Topic ceased most activity (shellac was particularly hard to source). But post-1945, the label made good on its original brief: ‘To use popular music to educate and inform and improve the lot of the working man,’ explains David Suff, the current spearhead of the world’s oldest independent label – and the undisputed home of British folk music. Tonight at the Barbican (where Topic held their 60th birthday concerts), musical director Eliza Carthy – part of the Topic recording family since 1997, though her parents Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy have been members since the sixties and seventies respectively - has marshalled a line-up to reflect the passing decades, which hasn’t been without its problems. ‘We have far too much material, given it’s meant to be a two-hour show!’ she says. ‘It’s impossible to represent 80 years – you’re talking about the left-wing leg, the archival leg, the many different facets of society - not just communists but farmers and factory workers - and the folk scene in the Fifties, the Sixties, the Seventies..
