Mots-clés : avifaune, périurbain, région méditerranéenne, phénologie, suivi à long terme. Abstract A year-round bird-species survey was monitored in two low density residential sites, each one on the outskirts of a small town north of Montpellier (Mediterranean southern France), one from 1980 to 1996, the other from 1998 to 2013. The two sites, as well as their surrounding landscape mosaics, have a contrasted vegetation with open habitats for the former and wooded habitats for the latter. A total of 90 bird-species were listed. Most of the 39 species most regularly observed every year on both sites, i.e. characteristic species, are widespread and abundant across France. However, these species constitute a bird assemblage of high phenological diversity, as it is usual for the South European avifauna. Only ca. a third of the characteristic species is more or less associ- ated to urbanized habitats. Key-words : avifauna, rural-urban fringe, Mediterranean region, phenology, long-term survey.

Fragmenta entomologica, Roma, 40 (1): 105-114 (2008) NOTES ON TRICHOFERUS ARENBERGERI WITH DESCRIPTION OF MALE (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae) ALESSANDRO B. BISCACCIANTI (*) and DANIELE SECHI (**) Trichoferus arenbergeri Holzschuh, 1995 was described from Sar- dinia based upon three females collected in the following localities: “2 km westl, Siniscola [NU], Monte Albo” (locus typicus), “Siniscola (Nuoro)” and “Ozieri” [SS] (Holzschuh 1995: 15). The male of this taxon is still unknown, as well as its biology, ecology and preimaginal stages. During several surveys carried out from 2002 to 2007 at differ- ent sites in southern Sardinia, several specimens (larvae, pupae and adults of both sexes) of this poorly known longhorn beetle were col- lected and observed. The aim of this paper is to describe the male morphology, the biology and the habitat of the species, with a discus- sion about its relationship to other congeneric species. Larval and pu- pal morphology will be treated in a further contribution (Biscaccianti & Di Giulio unpublished data). Specimens examined are listed from North to South and from East to West; they are preserved in the collections listed below. Measures of specimens are taken in the following way. Total length: from the forehead to the apex of elytra; elytral length: from humerus to elytral apex; elytral width: maximum width at humeri; tarsal joint length: from the base of joint (excluding articulation) to the apical margin, or to the midpoint of a line tangential to the apex of the lobes (for bilobed joints); tarsal joint width: maximum width. Nomenclature of associated beetle-fauna follows Liberti (2007), plant nomenclature follows Conti et al.

  • The Beetle Fauna of Dominica, Lesser Antilles (Insecta: Coleoptera): Diversity and Distribution
INSECTA MUNDI, Vol. 20, No. 3-4, September-December, 2006 165 The beetle fauna of Dominica, Lesser Antilles (Insecta: Coleoptera): Diversity and distribution Stewart B. Peck Department of Biology, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5B6, Canada stewart_peck@carleton. ca Abstract. The beetle fauna of the island of Dominica is summarized. It is presently known to contain 269 genera, and 361 species (in 42 families), of which 347 are named at a species level. Of these, 62 species are endemic to the island. The other naturally occurring species number 262, and another 23 species are of such wide distribution that they have probably been accidentally introduced and distributed, at least in part, by human activities. Undoubtedly, the actual numbers of species on Dominica are many times higher than now reported. This highlights the poor level of knowledge of the beetles of Dominica and the Lesser Antilles in general. Of the species known to occur elsewhere, the largest numbers are shared with neighboring Guadeloupe (201), and then with South America (126), Puerto Rico (113), Cuba (107), and Mexico-Central America (108). The Antillean island chain probably represents the main avenue of natural overwater dispersal via intermediate stepping-stone islands. The distributional patterns of the species shared with Dominica and elsewhere in the Caribbean suggest stages in a dynamic taxon cycle of species origin, range expansion, distribution contraction, and re-speciation. A chromosomal analysis of 15 species of Gymnopleurini, Scarabaeini and Coprini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) R. B. Angus, C. J. Wilson & D. J. Mann The karyotypes of one species of Gymnopleurini, two Scarabaeini, five Onitini and seven Coprini are described and illustrated. Gymnopleurus geoffroyi, Scarabaeus cristatus, S. laticollis, Bubas bison, B. bubalus, B. bubaloides, Onitis belial, O. ion, Copris lunaris, Microcopris doriae, M. hidakai and Helopcopris gigas all have karyotypes with 2n=18 + Xy. Copris hispanus and Paracopris ramosiceps have karyotypes with 2n=16 + Xy and Copris sinicus has a karyotype comprising 2n=12 + Xy. Heterochromatic B-chromosomes have been found in Bubas bubalus. Spanish material of Bubas bison lacks the distal heterochromatic blocks found in most of the chromosomes of Italian specimens. The karyotype of Heliocopris gigas is unusual in that the autosomes and X chromosome are largely heterochromatic. R. B. Angus* & C. J. • Of the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
Belgian Journal ofEntomology 5 (2003) : 89-102 A review of the Oedemeridae (Coleoptera) of the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador Stewart B. PECK and Joyce COOK Department of Biology, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, K1S 5B6, Canada (e-mail: ste'[email protected]). Abstract Extensive new collections contribute new information on the identity and distribution of the oedemerid beetles of the Galiipagos Islands. Specimens previously recorded as near Oxacis pilosa CHAMPION are descn'bed as Oxycopis galapagoensis sp. n. Oxacis pilosa CHAMPION of Guatemala and Nicaragua is transferred to the genus Oxycopis. Hypasclera collenettei (BLAIR) is the most common and widespread species in the islands, and is variable in that it shows significant differences in aedeagus morphology between separate islands. Alloxacis hoodi V AN DYKE is found be a synonym of H. collenettei. H. seymourensis (MUTCHLER) is known only from the central islands. Paroxacis galapagoensis (LINELL) is also widespread. All four Galapagos species are presently considered to be endemic, and each represents a separate ancestral colonization of the archipelago. Keywords: · Hypasclera, Oxycopis, Paroxacis, island insects, endemic species, colonization. Introduction Members of the beetle family Oedemeridae are commonly called the false blister beetles. Adults are found frequently at lights or by sweeping vegetation, and they are obligate pollen feeders (AR.NETT, 1984). Larvae may feed on plant roots or may be inhabitants of moist decaying wood and some may live in salt-soaked driftwood (ARNETT, 1984, KrusKA, 2002). Oedemerids have been described and reported from the Galapagos by several workers: BLAIR (1928; 1933); F'RANZ (1985); LINELL (1898); MUTCHLER (1938); and VAN DYKE (1953).

Olivier, 1790), Heterobostrychus aequalis (Waterhouse, 1884), Sinoxylon unidentatum (Fabricius, 1801), Xyloperthella picea (A.G. Olivier, 1790) and Apate monachus Fabricius, 1775 are recorded for the first time. Two of the mentioned species (H. aequalis and S. unidentatum) are alien and recorded only on the basis of single captures and the possible establishment of these species is discussed. Earlier records of Scobicia pustulata (Fabricius, 1801) from Malta are incorrect and should be attributed to S. chevrieri (A. Villa & J.B. Villa, 1835).

  • Bostrichidae (Coleoptera) of Socotra with Description of Two New Subspecies
ACTA ENTOMOLOGICA MUSEI NATIONALIS PRAGAE Published 31.xii.2017 Volume 57(supplementum), pp. 101–111 ISSN 0374-1036 http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:D831032F-6D38-4EB4-8974-F357F6E5EE5D https://doi.org/10.1515/aemnp-2017-0111 Bostrichidae (Coleoptera) of Socotra with description of two new subspecies Jerzy BOROWSKI & Marek SŁAWSKI Department of Forest Protection and Ecology, ul. Nowoursynowska 159/34, 02-776 Warsaw, Poland; e-mails: [email protected]; marek_sł[email protected] Abstract. New data on the occurrence of beetles of the family Bostrichidae on Socotra Island are presented – altogether nine species have been recorded hitherto. Besides faunistic data, the paper contains descriptions of two new subspecies: Enneadesmus obtusidentatus obscurior Borowski subsp. nov. and Enneadesmus forfi cula socotrensis Borowski subsp. nov. Both subspecies differ from nomino- typical forms in smaller size and distinctly shorter and less prominent tubercles and denticles on elytral truncation. Key words. Coleoptera, Bostrichidae, Enneadesmus, new subspecies, new records, Socotra, Yemen Introduction The family Bostrichidae comprises more than 550 species, grouped into 9 subfamilies, 11 tribes and more than 90 genera (BOROWSKI & WĘGRZYNOWICZ 2007). The Palaearctic fauna of Bostrichidae consists of 160 species and subspecies belonging to 46 genera (BOROWSKI 2007). Bostrichids are adapted to inhabit wood, having developed – besides many morphological structures enabling this way of life – symbiosis with bacteria producing cellulose-decopmosing enzymes. So equipped, they live almost exclusively in sap-wood, rich in starch, sugars and proteins. The activity of most species of Bostrichidae is restricted to twilight and night, only some of them – e.g. represantives of the genera Lyctus Fabricius, 1792, Psoa Herbst, 1797, Bostrichus Geoffroy, 1762 or Xylopertha Guérin-Méneville, 1845 – may remain active also in the daytime.

  • Supplemento Alla Revisione Del Genere Dasytes Paykull, 1799 in Italia (Coleoptera, Cleroidea, Melyridae Dasytinae)
BOLL. SOC. ENTOMOL. Abstract: A supplement to the revision of the Italian Dasytes (Coleoptera, Cleroidea, Melyridae Dasytinae). Since the revision of genus Dasytes in Italy, issued in 2004 ‒ 15 years ago ‒ the study of further, abundant materials allowed gathering several new information deemed to be worth publication.
