Peck Department of Biology, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5B6, Canada stewart_peck@carleton. ca Abstract. The beetle fauna of the island of Dominica is summarized. It is presently known to contain 269 genera, and 361 species (in 42 families), of which 347 are named at a species level. Of these, 62 species are endemic to the island. The other naturally occurring species number 262, and another 23 species are of such wide distribution that they have probably been accidentally introduced and distributed, at least in part, by human activities. Undoubtedly, the actual numbers of species on Dominica are many times higher than now reported. This highlights the poor level of knowledge of the beetles of Dominica and the Lesser Antilles in general. Of the species known to occur elsewhere, the largest numbers are shared with neighboring Guadeloupe (201), and then with South America (126), Puerto Rico (113), Cuba (107), and Mexico-Central America (108). The Antillean island chain probably represents the main avenue of natural overwater dispersal via intermediate stepping-stone islands. The distributional patterns of the species shared with Dominica and elsewhere in the Caribbean suggest stages in a dynamic taxon cycle of species origin, range expansion, distribution contraction, and re-speciation. Olivier, 1790), Heterobostrychus aequalis (Waterhouse, 1884), Sinoxylon unidentatum (Fabricius, 1801), Xyloperthella picea (A.G. Olivier, 1790) and Apate monachus Fabricius, 1775 are recorded for the first time. Two of the mentioned species (H. aequalis and S. unidentatum) are alien and recorded only on the basis of single captures and the possible establishment of these species is discussed. Earlier records of Scobicia pustulata (Fabricius, 1801) from Malta are incorrect and should be attributed to S. chevrieri (A. Villa & J.B. Villa, 1835). -

New data on the occurrence of beetles of the family Bostrichidae on Socotra Island are presented – altogether nine species have been recorded hitherto. Besides faunistic data, the paper contains descriptions of two new subspecies: Enneadesmus obtusidentatus obscurior Borowski subsp. nov. and Enneadesmus forfi cula socotrensis Borowski subsp. nov. Both subspecies differ from nomino- typical forms in smaller size and distinctly shorter and less prominent tubercles and denticles on elytral truncation. Key words. Coleoptera, Bostrichidae, Enneadesmus, new subspecies, new records, Socotra, Yemen Introduction The family Bostrichidae comprises more than 550 species, grouped into 9 subfamilies, 11 tribes and more than 90 genera (BOROWSKI & WĘGRZYNOWICZ 2007). The Palaearctic fauna of Bostrichidae consists of 160 species and subspecies belonging to 46 genera (BOROWSKI 2007). Bostrichids are adapted to inhabit wood, having developed – besides many morphological structures enabling this way of life – symbiosis with bacteria producing cellulose-decopmosing enzymes. So equipped, they live almost exclusively in sap-wood, rich in starch, sugars and proteins. The activity of most species of Bostrichidae is restricted to twilight and night, only some of them – e.g. represantives of the genera Lyctus Fabricius, 1792, Psoa Herbst, 1797, Bostrichus Geoffroy, 1762 or Xylopertha Guérin-Méneville, 1845 – may remain active also in the daytime. -

ABSTRACT Diversity, and for the first time, the vertical distribution of borer insects (Scolytinae, Platypodinae, and Bostrichidae) are described as associated with the edge and inside of a mangrove. To determine the diversity in these sites, insects were captured with interception traps baited with 70 % ethyl alcohol and using ultraviolet light as an attractant. To analyze the vertical distribution, traps baited with ethyl alcohol were placed at 1.5 m, 6 m, and 12 m in height. According to the diversity index (1D), the bor- der was 1.36 more diverse than the inside with 15.82 and 11.67 respectively. -

E-mail: [email protected] Recibido: 20 de enero 2015 Aceptado: 20 de agosto 2015 RESUMEN Se evaluó la riqueza de especies de los insectos presentes en árboles de Prosopis pallida de la Universidad de Piura: insectos totales, insectos plaga e insectos benéficos y se discute sus posibles relaciones con algunos factores climáticos (sequía y precipitación). Se registraron, en total, 9 órdenes, 69 familias y 129 especies de insectos, el orden Coleoptera con 40 especies y la familia Coccinellidae con ocho especies fueron los más diversos. Los insectos plaga están representados por 57 especies y se agrupan en fitófagos (46 especies) y succionadores de savia (11 especies). Los árboles de Prosopis pallida son atacados mayormente por coleópteros barrenadores de las familias Cerambycidae (47%), Bostrichidae (33%) y lepidópteros nocturnos de la familia Noctuidae (15%), siendo el estado larval con el que más hacen daño. Las hojas y ramas son atacadas principalmente por lepidópteros defoliadores de las familias Geometridae, Crambidae y Gelechiidae.
