Game Theory in Security, Sports, and Business Note to teachers: Teacher notes appear in dark red in the module, allowing faculty to pull these notes off the teacher version to create a student version of the module. Module Summary This module introduces students to game theory concepts and methods, starting with zero-sum games and then moving on to non-zero-sum games. Students learn techniques for classifying games, for computing optimal solutions where known, and for analyzing various strategies for games in which no optimal solution exists. Finally, students have the opportunity to transfer what they’ve learned to new game-theoretic situations. Prerequisites Students should be able to use the skills learned in High School Algebra 1, including the ability to graph linear equations, find points of intersection, and algebraically solve systems of two linear equations in two unknowns. Knowledge of basic probability (such as should be learned by the end of 9th grade) is also required; experience with computing expected value would be helpful, but can be taught as part of the module. No computer programming experience is required or involved, although students with some programming knowledge may be able to adapt their knowledge to optional projects. Suggested Uses This module can be used with students in grades 10-14 in almost any class, but is best suited to students in mathematics, economics, political science, or computer science courses. -

First, the manual presents a background discussion of the materials. The materials resulted from an ethnic education project basedon a course for teachers on Community Policies in Ethnic Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle. One of the main goals of the project was to develop materials in ethnic studies for grades 5-8 that deal with Greeks, Jews, Lithuanians, and Ukrainians. Two main themes selected for the materials are(1) contributions of an ethnic group to American life and (2) the relationship of an ethnic group to its homeland. The materials concentrate on the following five topics: early settlement of America, mass immigration, cultural patterns in Europe and USSR, conflicts within the nation, and challenge of an interdependent world. The ways that the themes in the materialscan be integrated into an existing curriculum are listed and matchedto one of the five topics of ethnic studies. -

Thinly veiled anti-homelessness legislation is now standard urban policy across much of the United States. One clear marker of this new urbanism is that vulnerable and unsheltered people are increasingly being treated as moveable policy objects and pushed even further toward the margins of our communities. Whilst the political-economic roots of this trend are in waning localism and neoliberal polices that defined “clean up the streets” initiatives since the 1980s, the cultural roots of such governance in fact go back much further through complex historical representations of masculinity, work, race, and mobility that have continuously haunted discourses of American homelessness since the nineteenth century. A common perception in the United States is that to be homeless is to be inherently mobile. This reflects a cultural belief across the political spectrum that homeless people are attracted to places with lenient civic attitudes, good social services, or even nice weather. This is especially true in the American West where rich frontier myths link notions of homelessness with positively valued ideas of heroism, resilience, rugged masculinity, and wilderness survival. -

However, the communication of ideas and opinions on societal issues also takes place in entertainment formats such as fictional TV series. Furthermore, mediation in entertainment is often regarded as more effective than dissemination through information formats, (also) due to the evading of recipients’ selection barriers. The importance of investigating TV series bases on the format’s large narrative space that enables the communication and repetition of ideas and messages and on the format’s popularity with audiences and, consequently, with broadcasters. Countless different influences shape the composition of TV series’ content and the inclusion of societally relevant messages. One potentially very important reason for incorporating specific messages and content elements in TV series is the extent to which decision-makers regard societal relevance as a success factor. -
