Borislav Grgin Filozofski fakultet sveučilišta u Zagrebu PreCeeDing the TRIPLEX CONFINIUM – the battLe oF krbava FieLD, sePteMber 9th, 1493 In this paper the attempt has been made to present a rounded view and oer some new interpretations re- garding one of the most recognizable and dramatic moments during the late medieval Croatian history. e Battle of Krbava Field, September 9th, 1493, dramatically shook the very foundations of medieval Croatia’s political and social structures. It stimulated creation of various texts written by its contemporaries and later commentators, who were discussing political, military and symbolical elements of the battle. e battle left a signicant imprint even in the collective memory of the Croatian people, thanks to the older historians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the interpretations of the battle in school manuals and teaching. e Krbava Battle, due to its real and symbolic signicance in Croatian˝history, still remains an interesting and challenging topic for the historians and for the wider public. erefore, it is not surprising that, due to incomplete and sometimes conicting and contradictory information in the sources, the interest for the battle and various interpretations reemerged during the last two decades and a half, after Croatia gained its independence. GODINE Sadržaj: U historiografiji komunističke Jugoslavije problematika djelovanja civilnih i vojnih vlasti Nezavisne Države Hrvatske (NDH) na području današnje Bosne i Hercego- vine tijekom Drugog svjetskog rata bila je djelomično istražena jer se ta tema nije mogla slobodno znanstveno istraživati niti se o njoj moglo slobodno pisati. U spomenutom razdoblju naglasak je bio na istraživanju partizanskog pokreta, dok je drugim sudioni- cima rata davana znatno manja pozornost. Oni koji su o toj temi pisali, malu ili gotovo nikakvu pozornost pridavali su sagledavanju okolnosti u kojima su utemeljena i djelo- vala tijela civilne i vojne vlasti NDH u Bosni i Hercegovini pa tako i na području bihać- ko-cazinskog kraja. Athens Journal of History - Volume 1, Issue 3 – Pages 195-204 Traffic Connectivity in Croatia in the Past: The Dubrovnik Region Case By Marija Benić Penava This paper analyses the development of traffic routes in the far south of Croatia during the 19th and 20th century. Poor traffic connectivity was the consequence of traffic policy which was subordinated to the interests of Vienna in the Austro- Hungarian Monarchy, and after World War I, to Belgrade. Since the Dubrovnik region was oriented towards the sea, and since traditionally it had strong entrepreneurship and sea traffic that enabled great economic prosperity of Dubrovnik in the past centuries. Ships flying the flag of Sveti Vlaho (Saint Blaise, the patron saint of the city) were present in the Mediterranean and the world’s oceans, yet the service industry which Dubrovnik provided was completed by tourism only in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The perception of Dubrovnik as a world tourist destination was established in the first half of the 20th century and that could only be maintained by quality traffic routes. Therefore it was extremely important for the prosperity of the far south of Croatia to have and retain the best connectivity by railway as well as sea, land and air traffic. Introduction The transition from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century was a period of great economic change in Europe. The discovery of the Watt’s steam engine (1764) enabled mechanical transport, which neither the working animals nor the natural power, on which transportation was dependent previously, could not contest. The steam engine passed the milestone in the field of transport connection. -

After dealing with the natural features and social importance of the Posavina region in the past, presented is the importance of this region as a unique Croatian ethnic territory during the Mid- dle Ages. With the appearance of the Ottomans and especially at the beginning of the 16th century, great ethnic changes oc- cured, primarily due to the expulsion of Croats and arrival of new ethnic groups, mostly Orthodox Vlachs and later Muslims and ethnic Serbs. With the withdrawal of the Ottomans from the Pannonian basin to the areas south of the Sava River and the Danube, the Sava becomes the dividing line creating in its border areas two socially and politically different environments: the Slavonian Military Frontier on the Slavonian side and the Otto- man military-frontier system of kapitanates on the Bosnian side. Both systems had a special influence on the change of ethnic composition in this region. With the withdrawal of the Ottomans further towards the southeast of Europe and the Austrian occu- pation of Bosnia and Herzegovina the Sava River remains the border along which, especially on the Bosnian side, further changes of ethnic structure occured. Summary Today the main problems of the islands are the poor demographic picture caused KEY WORDS by depopulation, low birth rate, prevalence of the elderly population, and relatively island’s population low economic activities. In that reason, the paper presents the influence of the traffic transport connection between connections between Croatian’s islands and mainland on the demographic picture islands and mainland of the islands. The aim of this paper is to conduct systematic and scientifically island’s economy research of influence various factors on the demographic picture of the islands in sustainable development order to insure the sustainable development of the islands and the retention of the inhabitants on the islands. This paper analyzes the population of Croatian’s islands according to the latest census and the category is correlated with the most prominent limiting factor of development, which is the traffic connection between islands and mainland. The research shows that the improvement of traffic connection and increased density of traffic network between islands and mainland does not have a direct impact on the number of island’s population, but it has a positive impact on all economic and social activities, by creating the prerequisites for sustainable development of the islands and raising the quality of life on islands, as evidenced by the growth of the island’s population on bridged islands and drop population in small islands and islands unrelated to bridges. -
