Natuurpunt De Ratel Nevele - Lovendegem De vallei van de Oude Kale: een verborgen pareltje ontluikt In de omgeving van Gent zijn er hier en daar interessante plekjes natuur waar het aangenaam toeven is voor wandelaars en natuurliefhebbers. Dat die plekjes niet verloren gaan maar beschermd en verder uitgebreid worden, is te danken aan het vele werk van vrijwilligers in de buurverenigingen van Natuurpunt Gent. Eén van die pareltjes is de vallei van de Oude Kale, een natuurgebied op de grens van Nevele, Lovendegem en Gent. % reviewed paper Spatial Transformations in Urban Areas During the Past 50 Years Isabelle Loris (Phd Msc Isabelle Loris, Ghent University - Center for Mobility and Spatial Planning, Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat 41 B2, 9000 Gent, Belgium, [email protected]) 1 ABSTRACT This research examines the dynamics of spatial transformations in highly urbanized areas and in particular the urban agglomeration of Ghent (Belgium). To this end we go back 50 years in time (1963-2013). The hypothesis is assumed that three major spatial transformations take place during this period: (1) the population increase leads to sub-urbanization or the spreading of functions around the city center until the 1980s and (2) is followed by a period of compaction processes in which remaining open areas are filled within the suburban area. It is mainly about new construction. This condensed nebula - which presents itself as a city edge – (3) finally, together with the city core, transforms both in nature and in use of the existing built-up tissue. This mainly concerns renovation and reuse. The dynamics of these processes can be reconstructed on the basis of building and allotment permits. Based on this, neighborhoods can be distinguished with low or high dynamics regarding transformations. Finally, it will be investigated where transformations will occur in the future. Socio-economic characteristics of starters on the residential market can be an indication of expected transformations in the future in other neighborhoods. The article introduces the concept of Napoleon plots to carry out statistical and spatial analysis. Dynamics and patterns are mapped. Introduction In October 2018, municipal elections will be held again in Belgium. They mark the six-yearly highlight of local democracy in Belgium and Flanders in particular. However, the elections will be held against a background of an intensely changing administrative landscape. First of all, the local centres for social wellbeing will be integrated in the cities and municipalities. This means an additional burden for the new councils that will take office in January 2019. From that moment onwards, the local councils will also be responsible for all social issues on the local level. In the past the social policy was the responsibility of a separate council, that will cease to exist by the end of 2018. Next to that, the new legislature will start with the implementation of a new legal framework, a new decree that sets out the rules for local government. This decree introduces many new forms of management and new procedures to organize local government itself. Finally, new municipal mergers, for the first time in more than 40 years, dominate the political agenda in 15 out of the 308 Flemish municipalities. -

Varen tussen Gent en Deinze via het Kanaal Gent-Brugge-Oostende (Brugse Vaart) en het Afleidingskanaal van de Leie Het Kanaal Gent-Brugge-Oostende staat in Gent via de Ringvaart in verbinding met de Leie en de Schelde. In Merendree kruist het kanaal het Afleidingskanaal van de Leie. In westelijke richting vormt het kanaal de verbinding naar Brugge en verder naar Oostende, waar het via zeesluizen uitwatert in de Noordzee. Een beetje geschiedenis... De Brugse Vaart en het Kanaal Gent-Brugge-Oostende De geschiedenis van het Kanaal Gent-Brugge- Oostende gaat terug tot de 13de eeuw en daarmee is het één van de oudste kanalen van Vlaanderen. Oorspronkelijk liep het kanaal enkel tussen Brugge en Gent en werd het daarom ook de Brugse Vaart genoemd. Het ontstond door een bovenloop van de Reie, namelijk de Brugse Leie of Zuidleie, te verbinden met een bovenloop van de Durme, die ook Rivierenstelsel tussen Gent, Brugge en Oostende rond 1200. De kaart illustreert hoe de Zuidleie en de Hoge Kale in de wel Hoge of Oude Kale genoemd wordt. Karakteristiek bedding van het kanaal werden opgenomen. zijn de hoge zandruggen die moesten doorgraven worden. Op die plaatsen ligt het kanaal nu diep in het landschap verzonken. De bedoeling was om Brugge van meer drinkwater te voorzien en ook om de Zwingeul te spuien1 . Later werd er, deels in de bedding van de Ieperlee, een verbinding met Oostende gegraven. 1 Spuien is het lozen van water door een spuisluis. Spuien gebeurt met name op die plekken waar het water op buitenwater (de zee) moet worden geloosd. -

We have also invited the ambassadors of those nations whose nationals were involved in the plane crashes on Belgian soil, namely the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Poland, Holland, France, the Czech Republic, Norway, the Republic of Ireland, the United States and Rhodesia. To these 14 countries we have added Russia, whose soldiers actively participated in the rescue of survivors of aircraft shot down over Belgium. Let us hope that this “G15” Act of Remembrance, to which you are invited, will take place under the most favourable conditions. The Air Defense is promising us the participation of a military band and an honour guard. For our part, we also expect pupils from the Rebecq schools to be present. The Newsletter you are now going to read contains a variety of articles which should be of interest to you. In it, we report the results of our investigations into 2 aircraft crashes: one at Lovendegem, near Waarschoot (East Flanders) in 1940, the other at Wauthier-Braine (Walloon Brabant) in 1945. -

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Population-based cross-sectional screenings by a team of 6 dermatologists were organized in 2 sociodemographically similar regions. The TBE was organized in a community of 9325 inhabitants 18 years and older (Wichelen, East Flanders, Belgium) during a 5-day screening (March 14-18, 2014). The LDS was organized in a sociodemographically comparable community (Nevele, East Flanders, Belgium) of 9484 adult inhabitants during a 4-day screening (April 22 and 25-27, 2014). The first population received a personal invitation for a standard TBE. In the second population, individuals were invited for an LDS if they had a lesion meeting 1 or more of the following criteria: ABCD rule (A, asymmetry; B, borders; C, colors; and D, differential structures), ugly duckling sign, new lesion lasting longer than 4 weeks, or red nonhealing lesions. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES In total, 1982 individuals were screened, and 47 skin cancers (2.4%) were histologically confirmed, including 9 melanomas (0.5%), 37 basal cell carcinomas (1.9%), and 1 squamous cell carcinoma or Bowen disease (0.1%). -
