Bol. San. Veg.

Regeneration methods to reduce pine weevil damage to conifer seedlings. ISSN: 1401-6230, ISBN: 91 576 6714 4 Damage caused by the adult pine weevil Hylobius abietis (L.) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) can be a major problem when regenerating with conifer seedlings in large parts of Europe. Weevils feeding on the stem bark of newly planted seedlings often cause high mortality in the first three to five years after planting following clear-cutting. The aims of the work underlying this thesis were to obtain more knowledge about the effects of selected regeneration methods (scarification, shelterwoods, and feeding barriers) that can reduce pine weevil damage to enable more effective counter-measures to be designed. Field experiments were performed in south central Sweden to study pine weevil damage amongst planted Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.) seedlings. The reduction of pine weevil damage by scarification, shelterwood and feeding barriers can be combined to obtain an additive effect. When all three methods were used simultaneously, mortality due to pine weevil damage was reduced to less than 10%. Two main types of feeding barriers were studied: coatings applied directly to the bark of the seedlings, and shields preventing the pine weevil from reaching the seedlings. It was concluded that the most efficient type of feeding barrier, reduced mortality caused by pine weevil about equally well as insecticide treatment, whereas other types were less effective.

Its center of diversity exists in southern and eastern Asia from India to Taiwan, The Philippines, Japan, and Australia, Fiji, and Pacific Islands. Two species, T. cucumerina (snake gourd) and T. dioica (pointed gourd), are widely cultivated in tropical regions, mainly for the culinary use of their immature fruit. The fruit of these two species are good sources of minerals and dietary fiber. Despite their economic importance and nutritive values, not much effort has been invested toward genetic improvement of these crops. Only recently efforts have been directed toward systematic improvement strategies of these crops in India. Horticultural Reviews, Volume 41, First Edition. Edited by Jules Janick. Importation of Fresh Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), Shelled or in Pods, from Jordan into the Continental United States A Qualitative, Pathway-Initiated Risk Assessment February 14, 2011 Version 2 Agency Contact: Plant Epidemiology and Risk Analysis Laboratory Center for Plant Health Science and Technology United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Plant Protection and Quarantine 1730 Varsity Drive, Suite 300 Raleigh, NC 27606 Pest Risk Assessment for Beans from Jordan Executive Summary In this risk assessment we examined the risks associated with the importation of fresh beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), in pods (French, green, snap, and string beans) or shelled, from the Kingdom of Jordan into the continental United States. We developed a list of pests associated with beans (in any country) that occur in Jordan on any host based on scientific literature, previous commodity risk assessments, records of intercepted pests at ports-of-entry, and information from experts on bean production. This is a qualitative risk assessment, as we express estimates of risk in descriptive terms (High, Medium, and Low) rather than numerically in probabilities or frequencies. We identified seven quarantine pests likely to follow the pathway of introduction. We estimated Consequences of Introduction by assessing five elements that reflect the biology and ecology of the pests: climate-host interaction, host range, dispersal potential, economic impact, and environmental impact. We estimated Likelihood of Introduction values by considering both the quantity of the commodity imported annually and the potential for pest introduction and establishment. We summed the Consequences of Introduction and Likelihood of Introduction values to estimate overall Pest Risk Potentials, which describe risk in the absence of mitigation.

Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits.

Ophiostomatoid fungi associated with the ambrosia beetle Platypus cylindrus in cork oak forests in Tunisia. Tunisian Journal of Plant Protection 13 (si): 61-75. Cork oak (Quercus suber) is a unique species of the Western Mediterranean region and over the last decades it has been threatened by several pests and diseases. Amongst the main dangerous pests, the ambrosia beetle Platypus cylindrus (the oak pinhole borer) has a key role on the process of cork oak decline namely in Portugal, Morocco, and Algeria. However, in Tunisia, where cork oak forests cover around 90.000 ha of the territory, this insect continues to have a secondary pest status. As all ambrosia insects, P. cylindrus is able to establish symbiotic relationships with fungi and it is known as the vector of ophiostomatoid fungi, a group including primary tree pathogens. The aim of this study was to identify these beetle-associated fungi in Tunisian forests and to understand the contribution of this association in cork oak decline by comparing with the results from other countries.

Large grazing herbivores drive the ecology of the site and can have a profound impact on invertebrates, both positive and negative. This survey was commissioned in order to assess the site’s invertebrate assemblage in a standardised and repeatable way both internally between fields and sections and temporally between years. Eight fields were selected across the estate with two in the north, two in the central block
