River travelers camped here before the turn of the century and seemed always to build their campfires in the same place, at the downstream corner of the arch. So were you.” That he and the board of the Sierra Club had chosen not to contest the damming of Glen Canyon was, in his mind, his greatest failure. By all accounts, though, it also transformed him. Brower went on to forge a template for modern activism that still defines much of the work of the Sierra Club to this day. David Brower had many years to regret the loss of Glen Canyon. He died in 2000—soon after “climate change” entered the national lexicon and shortly before the Sierra Club’s volunteer leadership resolved to focus on addressing it. Would he have savored the irony that climate pollution from fossil fuels is hastening the demise of Lake Powell? Perhaps, but such a harsh remedy surely is not one he would have chosen.

    The Lost World Of Glen Canyon feel as though I’m traveling back through time as I round yet another bend in Davis Gulch, a tributary of the Escalante River in southern Utah. I’m descending deeper and deeper into a redrock labyrinth, which Ihasn’t seen the light of day for more than 30 years. Each new twist in the canyon walls reveals a succession of plant communities quickly reclaiming the newly exposed ground. Submerged beneath 60 feet of Lake Powell water just five years ago, the small clear steam at my feet now gurgles beneath a profusion of willows and eight-foot tall cottonwood trees swaying in the breeze. Before making this trip, I had visions of a muddy slog through silt- clogged, tamarisk-choked canyon bottoms.     THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography.

Ansel Adams Gunlock, Washington County, Utah, 1953 Ansel Adams El Capitan, Yosemite National Park, California, 1956 Ansel Adams (American, 1902-1984) Ansel Adams’s documentation of the western landscape has taken on iconic significance as one of the defining purist visions of both the American West and of the photographic medium. Images such as this one, taken within the National Park System, have frequently been used to promote tourism and preservation of the landscapes they portray. El Capitan is a subject Adams photographed repeatedly, using the mountain’s towering presence to signify the sublime and unfathomable vastness of nature. Compositionally, Adams tends to frame these monuments of nature so that their iconic character is evoked, and to this aim, he avoids including the tourists and signs of habitation that surround the sites. Born in San Francisco in 1902, Adams began working as an official photographer for the Sierra Club in 1928. In 1932 he and other California-based photographers, including Edward Weston, founded the group f64, which maintained an interest in the technically perfect photographic print. The name f64 is a reference to the smallest standardized aperture setting on the camera’s lens; photographs taken on this setting have the greatest depth of field meaning that nearly every object in the picture plane is in perfect focus.

Of the 46 color prints, many were originally reproduced in Eliot Porter's two books for the Sierra Club: In Wildness is the Preservation of the World (1962) and The Place No O�e Knew: Glen Canyon on the Colorado (1963.) Seven black and white photographs also included make an interesting point of com- parison with his color work. Eliot Porter's interest has always been in nature photography - in landscape, in flowers, in rocks and water, in birds. All are represented in the present exhibition at the Institute, which indicates Porter's place as the great living master of color photography. Born in Winnetka, Illinois in 1901, Eliot Porter graduated from Harvard in 1924 and from its Medical School in 1929. After teaching biochemistry and bacteriology there from 1930 to 1939, he gave up science for photography. In 1941 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, renewed in 1946, for bird photography. In the same year he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he still lives. Eliot Porter's work has been published in Land Birds of America, Living Birds of the World, Les plus beaux oiseaux, Living Insects of the World, The Lower Animals, and American Water and Game Birds.
