  • Koel Chatterjee Phd Thesis
Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.

It is surprisingly related today. The main theme of Shakespeare’s work is ‘LOVE’- ‘the blind fool’. He indirectly acknowledges there may be obstacles in true love and urges to marry with true ‘mind’ rather than merely two people. This love is a bold subject matter that has always lacked rules and always attracts controversy - specially within the strict norms of Asian Culture. These various challenges and obstacles make multistory-love-complex silently. Cinema woos audiences by offering this emotion. Modern Indian Cineme is already an indestructible massive field of art work which has been successfully taken the extract of the Shakespearean drama to serve the common. The literary works of Shakespeare reinvigorate uncountable people of the world. The unique excellence of Bard’s ‘violent delights’ and ‘violent ends’; excessive passion and love full of zeal; jealousy and romance; greed for empowerment and assassination; laughter and satire; aesthetic sensibility and of course the plot construction both in comedy and tragedy- are all time favourite to Bollywood screen.

KAUSHIK BHAUMIK The Persistence of Rajasthan in Indian Cinema : One Region, So Many Views O f all the eco-cultural zones in India Rajasthan has received the maximum cinematic attention from filmmakers not belonging to the region, ranging from Mani Kaul from Kashmir to Vijay Anand from Punjab to Kumar Shahani from Sind to Satyajit Ray from Bengal to Kalpana Lajmi from Assam. There is by now a large corpus of films shot in this region that together make up a series of overlapping viewpoints on aspects of Indian culture. Beginning with the very process of narrativization and visualizing narratives, thinking through India’s cultural histories at its eco-cultural frontiers, to the issue of feudal cultures that constitute the political and cultural economies of north India, if not India as a whole, the films have touched on a wide range of concerns.1 For the purposes of this seminar my simple argument would be that Rajasthan serves as some kind of a cultural matrix where the ‘truth’ of India is relentlessly queried and the workings of the eco-culture made to utter oracular prognostications about the fate of India, albeit a certain India. The rarefaction of cultural life in an arid eco-frontier of north India seems to distil the ‘essence’ of north Indian culture as a whole and therefore serves as much to reveal as construct a cultural fantasy about what north Indian culture is all JOURNAL OF THE MOVING IMAGE 13 about. Such a ‘marginal-central’ position that narratives set in Rajasthan seem to occupy in the history of Indian cinema in turn creates an ‘extreme’ cinema in all registers of filmmaking that produce, I shall argue, the intensification not of a ‘real’ of India but of certain filmmaking proclivities reacting to the directions India’s cultural history has taken in the last fifty years or so.

As purveyor of entertainment, Bollywood has provided a platform to many actors to flourish their talents as an actor. As far as Aamir Khan is concerned, acting is the life, blood, and soul of Aamir Khan. The way he portrays various characters in his movies, make him a perfect actor of versatile genre. Less studies have been conducted on Aamir Khan and his movies, and on the versatile portrayal of Aamir Khan contained in his movies. The purpose of this paper is to understand the versatile characteristics played by Aamir Khan in his movies. The present paper makes an attempt to critically analyse the three movies of different genres of Aamir Khan. These movies were purposively selected as Lagaan – a patriotic, productional and nostalgic movie, Rang De Basanti – a revolutionary, nationalistic and rebellious movie, and Taare Zameen Par – an inspirational, experimental and directorial movie, on account of their distinguishing stories. As the selected films etched a niche in the hearts and minds of cinemagoers and movie viewers due to their innovative stories and splendid cinematography, the thematic analysis was undertaken.

  • Aamir Khan AAMIR KHAN Is One of India’S Most Famous Bollywood Stars
Aamir Khan AAMIR KHAN is one of India’s most famous Bollywood stars. His new TV series, Satyamev Jayate, explores India’s biggest social challenges and has been seen by hundreds of millions of people in his country and across Asia. Khan was recently selected as one of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people. Aamir Khan, born in 1965 to Zeenat and Tahir Hussain Khan, belongs to the family of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, legendary freedom fighter and President of the Indian National Congress for the 11 years leading to the independence of India in 1947. Both his father Tahir Hussain Khan and uncle Nasir Hussain Khan were film makers for over four decades, and so, having grown up with films being made around him the world of film making was a natural choice for Khan. After high school he worked as an apprentice for four years to his uncle Nasir, one of the most successful film makers of his time. Khan made his acting debut in 1988 with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, a film produced by his uncle Nasir and directed by his cousin Mansoor Khan. The film was a huge success, catapulting Khan into overnight stardom. In his 25-year career, Khan has acted in 45 films, and has established himself as one of the most bankable stars in mainstream Indian cinema. By selecting unusual stories, he has consistently been challenging himself, and by hitting the bullseye at the boxoffice with each experiment, he has been redefining the rules of mainstream Indian cinema. In 2001 he turned producer with the acclaimed and hugely successful Lagaan (2001).
