Thank you. MP Visit Mr Jayawardena, MP for North East Hampshire, came to visit us on Friday. He could only manage a short visit but has promised to come back for longer to meet our students. He was very keen to discuss the concerns we have as a school and we discussed the following. 1) Recruitment At the Conservative Party conference, the “perfect storm” of missed recruitment targets, rising student population, improving economic prospects making teaching less attractive, coupled with decreasing numbers of graduates, did force the admission that teacher recruitment was “a challenge” from Nicky Morgan. Mr Jayawardena was interested to know my views on regional pay (why not) and bursaries for shortage subjects (not really working). 2) Fair Funding When schools in one part of the country can receive over £6,000 per student and others below £4,000 something is not right. Mr Jayawardena is extremely keen to promote a fairer funding formula and it will certainly benefit the schools in his constituency. We also discussed teacher workload, massively increased by changes to the curriculum in every key stage and changes to assessment. We are promised a period of stability, but that workload still exists and occupies much of our time. We look forward to his next visit – our Politics and Economics Sixth Form students were certainly keen to meet him and we would love to show him the excellent things we are doing. Open Morning We have hosted over 200 families at our Open Mornings for applications for 2016 and were very pleased that so many attended. I think that it is important that parents shouldn’t just believe what they hear and see on an Open Evening but check out a school in operation too. The feedback was very positive and our sixth form guides did an excellent job. For some sixth form, it was a new experience and therefore a learning opportunity but generally of benefit to all. It was a shame we couldn’t show off our new Hall and refurbished Science labs but I have now learned not to make any promises with the completion dates of building projects. I look forward to seeing you all! Mrs Buttle YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE 11-15 JULY 2016 Following on from my presentation to the Year 10 students and parents at the information evening, I’d just like to make sure that everyone in Year 10 is aware that, if they organise a work experience placement during Trips Week (11 – 15 July 2016), they will need to complete a Private Placement Form and return it to me so that I can contact the company to complete some suitability checks. The Private Placement Form is available from my office, on the VLE under Business, Careers and Work Experience or if you email me, I can send one. Also on the VLE is an Information Booklet with lots of advice about finding a suitable placement. I am compiling a spreadsheet of companies that have offered work experience to our students and can also make that available. I’m here to help, so phone or email me. Good luck!
