Department of Economics Issn 1441-5429 Discussion paper 30/10 Yegor Gaidar: Pragmatic Economist or (and) Romantic Revolutionary1 Gennadi Kazakevitch2 The article reflects upon the legacy of Yegor Gaidar (19 March 1956 – 16 December 2009), Russian economist – academic and political leader, the key figure of the initial stage of post communist transformation in Russia in early 1990s. The Controversy Immediately after the life of any very prominent person comes to the end, unalloyed tributes normally follow. Not surprisingly this happened for Yegor Gaidar, both in the Western media and on the Russian internet sites of all political persuasions. There was just one difference. “THE FRIENDSHIP OF PEOPLES”: SOVIET BALLET, NATIONALITIES POLICY, AND THE ARTISTIC MEDIA, 1953-1968 BY KRISTEN ELIZABETH HAMM THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2009 Urbana, Illinois Adviser: Professor Diane P. Koenker ABSTRACT This project places the art form of Soviet classical ballet within the political and cultural context of the Khrushchev-era Thaw. It traces the Soviet Union’s long-standing nationalities policy—envisioned by Lenin even before 1917 and championed by Stalin throughout his tenure—and its connection to the proliferation of state-sponsored classical ballet theatres across the ethnically diverse, non-Russian regions and republics of the USSR. Classical ballet served a dual purpose in fulfilling the Soviet Union’s claim to be the most culturally, scientifically, economically, and politically advanced country on earth. First, the internationally-heralded achievements of Russia’s two oldest ballet institutions—the Bolshoi and Kirov Theatres—served to demonstrate Soviet cultural superiority to the rest of the world. Second, by founding state-sponsored ballet theatres in its peripheries, the Soviet Union utilized the art form of classical dance as a part of its civilizing mission to spread culture to its own “backward” regions. The artistic achievements of these provincial and republic ballet theatres served as a powerful source of propaganda, not only to Moscow and Leningrad, but also abroad, emphasizing the Soviet Union’s dedication to cultural development even in traditionally under-developed regions. -

Yegor Gaidar: Pragmatic Economist or Romantic Revolutionary? GENNADI KAZAKEVITCH1 The Controversy Immediately after the life of any prominent person comes to an end, unalloyed tributes normally flow. Not surprisingly this happened for Yegor Gaidar, both in the Western media and on Russian internet sites of all political persuasions. But there was one difference: the obituaries, both in English and in Russian, reveal how divided public opinion was on the man and his influence. “If a new Managing Director took over a large sluggish company and caused its value to shrink drastically, you’d call them a bungler, or at best unlucky. So why is Gaidar viewed as a hero?” “I admire such strong personalities as Yegor Gaidar was — [a man] who is able to perform a great deed and not be afraid of the responsibility.” 2 These are from a Western source. In Russia, a former mayor of Moscow, Gavriil Popov, and the current mayor, Yury Luzhkov, claimed that Yeltsin appointed Gaidar as Acting Prime Minister in 1992 only under pressure from the United States, and a promise of tens of billions of dollars in aid (Popov and Luzhkov 2010). They added: “The failure of Gaidar’s model [of reform] was inevitable because it was based on a wrong theory, and did not correspond to the fundamental reality predetermined by socialism in Russia.” In response, one of the most prominent Russian liberal journalists and dissidents Valeria Novodvorskaya (2010) writes: “Gaidar [is] our personal Saviour who opened the door for us to the capitalist Paradise.” 1 Monash University, [email protected]. -

Each chapter focuses on the core concerns of a particular author: Pelevin’s preoccupation with neocolonialism and empire, Slavnikova’s contrast between dystopian history and “utopian” death, Sorokin’s interest in historical trauma and the inner workings of terror, and Fedorchenko and Osokin’s eccentric utopian projects. The dissertation helps to understand contemporary culture, since speculative fiction’s imagined realities and envisioned futures are closely connected with sociocultural tendencies. The sustained investigation of the 2000s is merited by the fact that “the Zeroes,” as the decade is known in Russia, is characterized by significant cultural shifts. -

The plot was drawn from a prize-winning collection of stories native to the Ural Mountains, as collected by Pavel Bazhov and published Feature: under the title The Malachite Casket (Malakhitovaya shkatulka). The attractively illustrated tale had already appeared on the big screen The Tale of the Stone Flower in 1947: The Stone Flower was the first-ever Soviet movie in color, and deemed enough of a success for transposition to the grand Prokofiev’s Last Gift (Christina Ezrahi) 2 theater. The Mistress of the Copper Mountain guards a cache of Articles fabulous jewels and stones buried beneath the rugged terrain. The hero is a stonecutter, an artist-laborer obsessed with chiseling The Juvenile Symphony of Sergey Prokofiev a dazzlingly life-like flower out of malachite for his betrothed; (Laura J. Brown) 11 the villain a corrupt bailiff doomed to be swallowed up by the mountain on the Mistress’s command.
