Resolution No. 11-65

CONGRATULATING KUMU HULA KEALI'I REICHEL AND HALAU KE'ALAOKAMAILE FOR HONORS WON AT THE 48 TH ANNUAL MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL 2011

WHEREAS, the wahine from Wailuku's Halau Ke'alaokamaile swept top honors and was the overall winner at the 48 th annual Merrie Monarch Festival hula competition held on April 27-30, 2011, in Hilo, Hawaii, earning 1,163 points; and

WHEREAS, Halau Ke'alaokamaile won an early award when Tori Hulali Canha of Wailuku scored 1,071 points, capturing the Miss Aloha Hula crown, with her sparkling rendition of "Aia I Maui Ku'u Lei Loke" and "Pua Lei Aloha"; and

WHEREAS, the wahine from Halau Ke'alaokamaile went on to place first in the kahiko, or traditional dance, division by earning 584 points, and placed second in the auana, or modern dance, division by earning 579 points; and

WHEREAS, Halau Director, Kumu Hula Keali'i Reichel places emphasis on the Halau's respectful portrayal of the mele, or song, by taking time to understand the meaning of the song, and expressing that meaning through each dance; and

WHEREAS, Kumu Hula Keali'i Reichel instills in the haumana, or students, and the ho'opa'a, or chanters, that taking a scholarly approach to hula is only part of the equation; the rest is determination, skill, and trust in their kupuna, or elders, that will carry them forward to excel in the tradition of Hawaii's unique art of hula; and

WHEREAS, having been recognized at the Merrie Monarch Festival for their exceptional efforts and talent, Halau Ke'alaokamaile has brought pride and honor to the people of the County of Maui; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the County of Maui:

1. That it hereby congratulates Kumu Hula Keali'i Reichel and Halau Ke'alaokamaile for honors won at the 2011 Merrie Monarch Festival; and

2. That it also hereby recognizes all members of the Halau and ohana who played supportive roles that led to the winning of these distinguished awards. Resolution No. 6
