Last Match UTRGV Opens Season With Win Over Corpus Christi Feb. 3, 2021 at Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium – Freshman Anna Frida Groedem scored in the 96th minute to give The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team the 2-1 overtime victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, as part of the Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Wednesday at Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Field. UTRGV’s (1-0) lead over Corpus Christi (1-0) in the showdown standings is now 15-9. Groedem took control of the loose ball after the Islanders misplayed a goal kick and found the back of the net for her first-career goal and the game-winner. The scoring started midway through the first half, junior Shentatious Knox connected with sophomore Anna Torslov outside of the box as Torslov knocked it passed Kennedy Stelling in the 24th minute for the 1-0 lead. Corpus Christi got its lone goal from Maggie Murray in the 55th minute, which tied the match at 1-1 before going into overtime. Redshirt junior Maile Lundardi (1-0) made four saves in the match to earn the win. UTRGV outshot Corpus Christi 11-6 and 8-5 on goal. Stellling made six saves.

Previous Matches UTRGV Falls in Seminfinals to No. 1 Seattle U Nov. 8, 2019 at Championship Field – The fifth-seeded University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team fell 1-0 in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament to top-seeded Seattle University on Friday at Championship Field. The match remained scoreless until the 77th minute, when Seattle U’s (11-7-2, 6-1-1 WAC) Lauren Brown scored her first goal of the season making it 1-0. UTRGV (9-7-2, 3-3-1 WAC) put the pressure on Seattle U with the clock winding down as a header from senior goal keeper Kinga Szemik was saved by Seattle U goal keeper Madison Waguespack to close out the match. UTRGV Advances to WAC Semifinals on Penalty Kicks Nov. 6, 2019 at Championship Field – The fifth-seeded University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament with a 2-0 win in penalty kicks over No. 4 CSU Bakersfield after finishing in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday at Championship Field. Sophomore Elina Seppälä converted on her penalty kick to give UTRGV the 1-0 lead after senior Kinga Szemik made her second penalty-kick save. That set it up for senior Sarah Bonney who put it past CSU Bakersfield’s (9-9-2, 4-4-1 WAC) Andrea Neves to clinch the win for the Vaqueros. CSU Bakersfield got the scoring started in the 37th minute when Eszter Toth took the pass from Darian Tatum and put it in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Emily Zapata knotted the match at 1-1 in the 54th minute as she took the pass from junior Gina Steiner and got it past Neves for her eighth goal of the season setting up the penalty kicks finish. Rally Falls Short as UTRGV Falls at Seattle U Oct. 26, 2019 at Championship Field – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team scored a second half goal but the rally fell short, falling 2-1 to Seattle University on Saturday at Championship Field. Seattle U (9-7-2, 5-1-1 WAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of first half goals from Jessie Ray and Leahi Manthei. In the second half, UTRGV (9-6-2, 3-3-1 WAC) came out of halftime and quickly put some pressure on Seattle U. Senior Sarah Bonney found an open lane with her shot bouncing off the post and then it was sophomore Emily Zapata, who got the rebound and found the back of the net to get UTRGV on the board at 52:21.It’s Zapata’s team-leading sixth goal of the season. Seattle U’s Madison Waguespack, who made three saves throughout the match, kept UTRGV at bay the rest of the way. Seattle U outshot UTRGV 23-15 and 5-4 on goal.
