Wilson, Advisor The U.S. Army officer corps experienced an intellectual revolution following the experience of WWI that fundamental altered the relationship between man and machines in war. As a result, officers failed to develop the technology gene and began to think of war as being inherently quantitatively and technological based. This dissertation examines the relationship between technology and the U.S. Army and Navy officers specifically between 1900-1925. Furthermore, the treatise addresses the role of Frederick Taylor and the rise of scientific management within the U.S. Army and Navy. iii Acknowledgements In writing this dissertation, I received invaluable assistance and support from a number of people and organizations. -

How Western New York Gave Wings to the World --by M.E. Sterns ON AUGUST 25, 1886, there was a report in the Buffalo Courier concerning a paper read before the American Association for the Advancement of Science, whose 35th annual meeting was held in Buffalo that summer. The paper, presented by a Mr. Lancaster, was on the subject of flight and the newspaper article noted that: "Some of the members of the association seem to be in a quandary as to whether Mr. Lancaster is a crank; or a sharp practical joker who has been giving the great association of America's savants guff. On Monday, as has been duly reported, they quite unanimously joined in reviling and laughing at him." "An early Curtiss Pusher in a mowed hay field. Some of them flew, some of them didn't." So was the subject of flight treated by some of the nation's most progressive scientific minds in 1886. Fortunately, however, there were some who disagreed with the scientists of the time on the matter of flight --- men who could already see in their mind's eye the "flying contraptions" that were soon to be a reality. A group of these early air age enthusiasts lived in Buffalo during the latter part of the last century, and beginning with them, Western New York became an area where many of aviation's great firsts were performed or developed. MOST OF THESE MEN originally belonged to one of the many cycling clubs that were formed in the Buffalo area in the late 1800's, among them the Buffalo Bicycle Club (sometimes known as the High Wheel Club), the Press Cycling Club, the Ramblers, the East Side Cyclers and the Eldredge Club, of Tonawanda. -

Western Historical Manuscript Collection Kansas City KC263 – Katharine Wright Haskell (1874 – 1929) Papers, 1922-1928 (55 folders) Provenance: These letters were received as accession number 610kc from Mrs. Henry C. Haskell, the widow of Henry C. Haskell, stepson of Katharine Wright Haskell. Mrs. Henry C. Haskell loaned this material to Western Historical Manuscript Collection for microfilming on 20 October 1990. Biography: Katharine Wright was born in Dayton, Ohio on August 19, 1874, the last child and only daughter of Bishop and Mrs. Milton Wright of the United Brethren Church. Her four older brothers included Wilbur and Orville Wright, the first men to accomplish powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903. Katharine graduated from Oberlin College of Ohio in 1898 and after, taught Latin at Steele high school in Dayton and helped her brothers raise money for their famous project. Giving speeches and writing letters on behalf of the airplane experiment, Katharine was known to have been as necessary to the success of the flight at Kitty Hawk as were her brothers. Always maintaining close ties with her alma mater, she was elected to the Board of Trustees of Oberlin College. Katharine had met and become friends with Henry Haskell and with Isabel Cummings while the three were students at Oberlin College. Henry and Isabel were married in 1901. The couple were frequent guests at the Wright home in Dayton over the years, and when Isabel died in 1923, Henry resumed a correspondence with Katharine. In time, a romance developed. Wilbur, Orville and Katharine, each unmarried, lived together in Dayton. -

MS-1: Wright Brothers Collection PART III WRIGHT FAMILY PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION This series includes many original photographic prints made by the Wrights from their own negatives shortly after the images were taken. The Wrights exposed at least 303 gelatin dry plate negatives in the course of documenting their process of invention. All of their glass plate negatives were given to the Library of Congress in 1949, but many of their original prints remained with the Estate of Orville Wright. Many of the Wright Brothers’ original negatives were damaged in Dayton’s great flood of 1913, when they were submerged for up to four days. The Wright State University collection includes some images for which no negatives exist at the Library of Congress and so many of these prints are unique. In addition, this collection includes hundreds of prints collected by the Wrights through their association with other aviation pioneers such as Octave Chanute, and a great variety of aeronautical prints either collected by them, or sent to them by well-wishers through the years. While the major prints exist in both collections, both the Wright State University collection and the Wright collection in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress contain many images that are unique to each collection. Wilbur and Orville Wright began photographing their experiences on the Outer Banks using a 4 x 5 inch dry plate camera. In 1902 they purchased a Korona view camera which used 5 x 7 inch dry plates. They developed their negatives and made prints in the darkroom they set up at their home in Dayton. -

Episode 6, NC-4: First Across the Atlantic, Pensacola, Florida and Hammondsport, NY Elyse Luray: Our first story examines a swatch of fabric which may be from one of history’s most forgotten milestones: the world's first transatlantic flight. May 17th, 1919. The Portuguese Azores. Men in whaling ships watched the sea for their prey, harpoons at the ready. But on this morning, they make an unexpected and otherworldly sighting. A huge gray flying machine emerges from the fog, making a roar unlike anything they have ever heard before. Six American airmen ride 20,000 pounds of wood, metal, fabric and fuel, and plunge gently into the bay, ending the flight of the NC-4. It was journey many had thought impossible. For the first time, men had flown from America to Europe, crossing the vast Atlantic Ocean. But strangely, while their voyage was eight years before Charles Lindbergh's flight, few Americans have ever heard of the NC-4. Almost 90 years later, a woman from Saratoga, California, has an unusual family heirloom that she believes was a part of this milestone in aviation history. Wright Company The Wright Company was incorporated on November 22, 1909. The Wright Company factory was completed in November 1910 and a duplicate factory building was erected in 1911. The buildings continued in use until the Wright Company was sold, October 15, 1915. The Process of Invention The Search for Control: From their observations of how buzzards kept their balance, the Wright brothers began their aeronautical research in 1899 with a kite/glider. In 1900, they built their first glider designed to carry a pilot. The Wright brothers began serious experimentation in aeronautics in 1899 and perfected a controllable craft by 1905. In six years, the Wrights had used remarkable creativity and originality to provide technical solutions, practical mechanical Birthplace design tools, and essential components that resulted in a profitable aircraft. They did much more than simply get a flying machine off the ground. They established the fundamental principles of aircraft design and engineering in place today. In 1908 and 1909, they demonstrated their flying machine pub- licly in the United States and Europe. By 1910, the Wright Company was of Aviation manufacturing airplanes for sale.
