Ballets Russes is a feature-length documentary covering more than fifty years in the lives of a group of revolutionary artists. It tells the story of the extraordinary blend of Russian, American, European and Latin American dancers who, in collaboration with the greatest choreographers, composers and designers of the first half of the 20th century, transformed ballet from mere music hall divertissement to a true art form. From 1909, when Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev premiered his legendary Ballet Russe company in Paris, to 1962 when Serge Denham’s Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo performed for the last time in Brooklyn, Ballets Russes companies brought their popular, groundbreaking and often controversial choreographies to big cities and small towns around the world. Along the way, these artistic visionaries left their mark on virtually every other area of art and culture – from stage design, painting and music to Hollywood and Broadway. Through their inclusive cosmopolitanism, they also put the first African-American and Native American ballerinas on the stage. Using intimate interviews with surviving members of the Ballets Russes companies (now in their 70s, 80s and 90s) as well as rare archival materials and motion picture footage, Ballets Russes is both an ensemble character film and an historical portrait of the birth of an art form. -

Bolender spent the final third of his 70-year career in Kansas City, as Artistic Director of the Kansas City Ballet 1981-1995 (Missouri State Ballet 1986- 2000) and Director Emeritus, 1996-2006. Bolender’s records constitute the first processed collection of the Kansas City Ballet Archives. The collection spans Bolender’s lifetime with the bulk of records dating after 1960. A Message from Josefa Villanueva-Reyes, Artistic Director and Founder: I welcome you with great joy and happiness to celebrate the Santa Clara Ballet’s 45th Anniversary of the Nutcracker Ballet. The Santa Clara Ballet continues the legacy left to us by our late Director and choreographer, Benjamin Reyes, by sharing this favorite family Christmas Ballet with our community, our student and professional dancers and our loyal supporters. The Company’s roots started right here in Santa Clara, and has continued despite the usual problems of obtaining funding and support. We can continue because of all of you who are present in our performances, and through your generous donations and volunteer work. The Company continues its work in spreading the awareness and the love of dance to warm families and contribute to the quality of life of the community. For this Sunday’s performance of our 45th Annual Nutcracker, the stage will be graced by our Alumni who serve as a testament to the success of the company’s influence to the community and the world beyond. Josefa Reyes JOSEFA VILLANUEVA-REYES started her training in the Philippines with Roberta and Ricardo Cassell (a student of Vincenzo Celli). She was formerly a member of the San Francisco Ballet Company and the San Francisco Opera Ballet. Previous to that, she performed as a principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet Celeste for four years. Her performing experience included multiple lead roles from the classical repertory. Villanueva-Reyes taught at the San Francisco Conservatory of Ballet and Theatre Arts as well as San Jose City College. -

NEWS RELEASE Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts Sandra Bent, Public Relations (405) 325-5321 Exhibition Celebrating Ballets Russes Opens Oct. 6 at Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art NORMAN— The University of Oklahoma School of Dance, OU Libraries and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art are showcasing the Ballets Russes Special Collections and Archive and its connection to the University of Oklahoma with an array of exhibitions, lectures and an Oklahoma Festival Ballet production. Many events are open to the public with complimentary admission. The public is invited to the complimentary exhibition opening at the museum at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. From Diaghilev to Terekhov and Chouteau: An Exhibition of Material from the Ballets Russes Special Collections and Archive remains on display in the Ellen and Richard L. Sandor Gallery through Dec. 30. The exhibition opens alongside the museum’s fall exhibition Picturing Indian Territory: 1819-1907 the same night. The Ballets Russes, the pre-eminent ballet company of the early 20th century, was founded in 1909 by Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev. Throughout the company’s history, it was a who’s who of famous artists that ensured the success of the company. Noted composers Strauss, Stravinsky, Ravel and Prokoviev wrote scores for the ballet company. Set designers included such renowned painters as Picasso, Matisse, Braque and Miró. Choreographers such as Balanchine, Fokine and Massine, and principal dancers Nijinsky, Karsavina and Danilova served as dominant figures in the ballet world. The company’s cutting-edge productions forever changed audience expectations of ballet as theatre. The Ballets Russes connection to the university comes from two of its principle dancers Yvonne Chouteau and Miguel Terekhov. -

NATIONAL MEDAL OF ARTS | NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK NATIVE AMERICAN CONNECTIONS AT JACOB’S PILLOW A summary of the intersections between the Pillow and Indigenous peoples and traditions of the Americas, compiled by Jacob’s Pillow Director of Preservation Norton Owen. According to the chapter titled “Indians in Becket” by Pillow neighbor Ruth I. Derby in A Bicentennial History of Becket, the Mohicans camped in Becket during the summer months, hunting moose, deer, and bear, as well as otter, raccoons, beaver, foxes, and other small fur-bearing animals. A later Becket history identified descendants of the Muckhaneek, Narragansett, and Pequot tribes. They collected and dried food for the winter and skins for clothing. They also made maple syrup and sugar and taught settlers to do this. They sold the land to settlers in 1736, though the plans weren’t accurate and Chief Konkapot was upset that traditional hunting grounds were inadvertently included in the property transfer. This discrepancy was later settled with an additional payment that covered all lands west of the Westfield River. There are reportedly Indian burial grounds off George Carter Road, near Jacob’s Pillow. 1933 – During its first summer of Pillow performances, the repertory of Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers includes the Osage-Pawnee Dance of Greeting and a Shawn solo, Invocation to the Thunderbird. 1934 – Ted Shawn revives his Hopi Indian Eagle Dance, originally part of his full-length 1923 production, Feather of the Dawn. A new group work, Ponca Indian Dance, is presented for the first time. 1936 – The first act of a full-evening work, O Libertad!, opens with a section titled Noche Triste de Moctezuma and also includes other sections about Native Americans of the Southwest. -
