I warrant that this authorization does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. 2 Abstract This dissertation examines the factors that determine the behaviour of criminal entrepreneurs in legitimate markets. The particular aspect studied is how such entrepreneurs enter a new market when they immigrate into a new country (Chapter 1). The empirical focus of the thesis is the Bulgarian illegal entrepreneurs involved in the sale of stolen cars. More specifically, the dissertation compares their market behaviour in Bulgaria and in Spain between the late 1990s and 2010. The empirical basis for the dissertation is a comprehensive analysis of summaries of 86 Spanish police investigations against organised crime networks, as well as fieldwork consisting of interviews with 79 offenders, law-enforcement officers, entrepreneurs, and car-dealers in Spain and Bulgaria (Chapter 2). To best understand the intertwining of criminal entrepreneurs and legitimate markets the thesis starts by examining the operations of the car markets in Spain and Bulgaria (Chapter 3). It goes on to explain the ‘car-theft industry’ – focusing on how criminal enterprises and networks are structured and operate (Chapter 4). The analysis then continues by comparing how stolen cars are sold by illegal entrepreneurs in Bulgaria and Spain, and the different ways in which ‘legal’ and ‘illegal’ markets intertwine (Chapter 5). The conclusion of this analysis is that Bulgarian criminal entrepreneurs failed to enter the market for used cars in Spain, and instead preferred to traffic and sell the stolen cars in Bulgaria. There are two sets of factors that explain the reasons behind this failure. The first one is the local socio-economic and historical legacies in Bulgaria, which explain how illegal entrepreneurs and buyers (typically part of local economic elites) are linked (Chapter 6), and the factors that fuel demand for stolen cars. The role of the Bulgarian immigrant community in Spain is also considered. The second set of factors, examined through the lenses of economic theories, includes the economic / business rationale that influences the illegal entrepreneurs’ behaviour when entering a market (Chapter 7). The thesis goes on to conclude (Chapter 8) that it is the first set, the complex socio-economic and historical factors that best explain the behaviour of criminal entrepreneurs and their failure to sell stolen cars in Spain. 3 Acknowledgements The first year of the work on this thesis was funded by then Chevening Scholarships of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Many studies answer this question by examining the effects of relative immigrant group size. Instead, I argue that group size increases xenophobia when immigrants are ethnically visible, crossing salient linguistic, religious, or racial boundaries. In three investigations I look at the effects of the following factors on xenophobia: ethnic diversity in the immigrant population, ethnic diversity in the broader society, and being cultural marginal. Analyzing multilevel models using cross- national data from the European Social Survey (ESS), I examine the effects of regional and national contexts of immigrant visibility on xenophobia. I define xenophobia as the perception of immigrant threat. I also test the hypothesis that average xenophobia is higher among individuals living in more ethnically diverse countries. In the second investigation, I reexamine ii immigrant visibility, this time using Swiss ESS data to compare across municipalities. I also consider the effects of living adjacent to rather than in an immigrant-rich community. In a final investigation, I again analyze cross-national ESS data to determine the effects of being different from the cultural majority on xenophobia.

What explains these different perceptions? This project uses surveys and multi-sited ethnography to study the avenues for political voice and integration of immigrants and their offspring. It takes into account the role of the sending community in individual meaning-making, as well as the socialization and institutional practices of the receiving community. It compares the transnational circuits between Latin America and New York, North Africa and Paris, Morocco and Barcelona. The results point to the importance of the state in fostering processes of belonging and exclusion that get translated into different forms of everyday citizenship, contentious politics, and pathways of inclusion. Research Questions Why are Muslim immigrants in Europe seen as contentious while Latino immigrants in the United States are seen as passive? Is this empirically true? How can we explain these perceptions in a systematic way, beyond clichés about the ―radicalization of Islam‖ or the ―humility of Mexican workers‖? "821579 -Forest Crime - ISF-2017-AG-ENV" 2 Illegal logging accounts for as much as 10–30 % of the total logging worldwide, with some estimates as high as 20–50 %1 when laundering of illegal wood is included, with a growing involvement of organized crime. A significant proportion of illegal logging is now carried out by organized criminal networks utilising an international network of quasi-legitimate businesses and corporate structures to hide their illegal activities, which include creative accounting to launder criminal proceeds or collusion with senior government officials. Organized forest crime continues to evolve and develop new methods to conduct forestry crime operations and launder illegal timber. In the Danube-Carpathian Region and Bulgaria, forestry crime is a recognised problem, damaging Europe’s last primeval forests and undermining government policies to sustainably manage and protect forests. According to WWF Bulgaria, 2.5 million m3 of timber, or roughly a third of the total annual production, is lost annually to illegal logging2 and generates nearly 150 million leva (approximately 77,7 million euros) for those implementing the illegal harvest. Although the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR) came into force in 2013 to stop illegal wood and paper products being placed on the European market, the EUTR and national laws in Bulgaria against illegal logging have up to now not been implemented with full effect due to different gaps and obstacles.

Introduction to specific problems of the area The marine spatial plan for Mangalia-Shabla area was conceived as a pilot project included in MATSPLAN -BS project in order to test the capacities of the two countries to develop and adopt a concrete instrument for the management of the marine area. This plan takes into consideration the existing data describing the processes of the natural marine areas as well as the human activities developed in this area in order to establish balance between human actions and ecosystems subsistence. The plan is meant also to to put into practice the EU Directive for MSP, creating an institutional framework for MSP implementation in Romania and Bulgaria, enhancing the cross-border cooperation and exchange of information between the two countries. 1.1 Plan area delimitation The spatial plan area is located at the border between Romania and Bulgaria, its delimitation took into consideration two types of zones: the territorial waters (the management area) and coastal area and EEZ (the extended analyse area for the study of interactions).
