I warrant that this authorization does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. 2 Abstract This dissertation examines the factors that determine the behaviour of criminal entrepreneurs in legitimate markets. The particular aspect studied is how such entrepreneurs enter a new market when they immigrate into a new country (Chapter 1). The empirical focus of the thesis is the Bulgarian illegal entrepreneurs involved in the sale of stolen cars. More specifically, the dissertation compares their market behaviour in Bulgaria and in Spain between the late 1990s and 2010. The empirical basis for the dissertation is a comprehensive analysis of summaries of 86 Spanish police investigations against organised crime networks, as well as fieldwork consisting of interviews with 79 offenders, law-enforcement officers, entrepreneurs, and car-dealers in Spain and Bulgaria (Chapter 2). -

Journal of World Literature 5 (2020) 568–586 brill.com/jwl Intermedial Translation as Circulation Chu Tien-wen, Taiwan New Cinema, and Taiwan Literature Jessica Siu-yin Yeung soas University of London, London, UK [email protected] Abstract We generally believe that literature first circulates nationally and then scales up through translation and reception at an international level. In contrast, I argue that Taiwan literature first attained international acclaim through intermedial translation during the New Cinema period (1982–90) and was only then subsequently recognized nationally. These intermedial translations included not only adaptations of literature for film, but also collaborations between authors who acted as screenwriters and film- makers. The films resulting from these collaborations repositioned Taiwan as a mul- tilingual, multicultural and democratic nation. These shifts in media facilitated the circulation of these new narratives. Filmmakers could circumvent censorship at home and reach international audiences at Western film festivals. The international success ensured the wide circulation of these narratives in Taiwan. THE COINS OF MUSLIM MALTA Helen W. Brown In 1976 an attempt was made to study the coins from the period of the Muslim occupation of Malta and Gozo surviving in the public and in certain private collections on the islands. I am grateful to Dr Anthony Luttrell for instigating and facilitating this enterprise and for providing the study of the Mdina Hoard published in the article below. The friendly interest and co-operation of the museum curators is warmly acknowledged, and special thanks are due to the private collectors who provided help and information. The following collections were examined: National Museum of Archaeology, Valletta Gozo Museum Cathedral Museum, Mdina Museum of the Missionary Society of St. Paul, Rabat Mr. Joseph Attard Mr. Emanuel Azzopardi, Valletta Mr. Antoine Debono, Rabat Hon. Mr. Justice A.J. Montanaro Gauci, Valletta Chevalier John Sant Manduca, Mdina Mr. Roger Vella Bonavita, Attard Anonymous Collector, Vall etta. Several other collectors, among whose coins no pieces of immediate concern to the project were found, were generous with their time, and their help too is gratefully acknowledged. Outside Malta, enquiries were made at the Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem, St. John's Gate, Clerkenwell in London, and a gift of coins made to the British Museum in 1965 was also examined. Finally, three hoard groups of supreme interest and importance were considered: the great Mdina Hoard of gold coins, almost all melted down immediately, and surviving only in the description of Ciantar, the only substantial body of material whose Maltese provenance is authenticated beyond any doubt; a group of about 140 pieces, mostly of very base silver, the property of the National Museum; and another, similar, group, the property of a private collector. -

Many studies answer this question by examining the effects of relative immigrant group size. Instead, I argue that group size increases xenophobia when immigrants are ethnically visible, crossing salient linguistic, religious, or racial boundaries. In three investigations I look at the effects of the following factors on xenophobia: ethnic diversity in the immigrant population, ethnic diversity in the broader society, and being cultural marginal. Analyzing multilevel models using cross- national data from the European Social Survey (ESS), I examine the effects of regional and national contexts of immigrant visibility on xenophobia. I define xenophobia as the perception of immigrant threat. I also test the hypothesis that average xenophobia is higher among individuals living in more ethnically diverse countries. In the second investigation, I reexamine ii immigrant visibility, this time using Swiss ESS data to compare across municipalities. I also consider the effects of living adjacent to rather than in an immigrant-rich community. In a final investigation, I again analyze cross-national ESS data to determine the effects of being different from the cultural majority on xenophobia. -

Immigrant Political Voice in a Comparative Perspective: New York, Paris and Barcelona Ernesto Castañeda [email protected] To be presented at: Comparing Past and Present, Mini-Conference of the Comparative and Historical Section of the American Sociological Association Berkeley, CA August 12, 2009 Why are Muslim immigrants in Europe commonly perceived as contentious, while Latino immigrants in the United States are often perceived as passive? What explains these different perceptions? This project uses surveys and multi-sited ethnography to study the avenues for political voice and integration of immigrants and their offspring. It takes into account the role of the sending community in individual meaning-making, as well as the socialization and institutional practices of the receiving community. It compares the transnational circuits between Latin America and New York, North Africa and Paris, Morocco and Barcelona. The results point to the importance of the state in fostering processes of belonging and exclusion that get translated into different forms of everyday citizenship, contentious politics, and pathways of inclusion. Research Questions Why are Muslim immigrants in Europe seen as contentious while Latino immigrants in the United States are seen as passive? Is this empirically true? How can we explain these perceptions in a systematic way, beyond clichés about the ―radicalization of Islam‖ or the ―humility of Mexican workers‖? What role do religious views play in drawing real and imagined boundaries between immigrants and locals? -

ACT for Youth Center of Excellence A collaboration of Cornell University, University of Rochester, and New York State Center for School Safety Challenging Casanova: Moving beyond the notion that “boys just want sex” by Andrew Smiler, PhD According to popular culture, teenage boys want sex, not relationships. They don’t care with whom, where, or when it happens, as long as it doesn’t require any kind of emotional commitment or relationship. This image is so embedded in our culture that it’s the default presentation of many male rap performers in their music videos and it’s got its own (sub) genre of films. It’s the primary, if not only, depiction of male sexuality in abstinence-only education (Santelli et al., 2006). This image is damaging to boys, and acceptance of the behaviors that go along with it harms both boys and girls. We can do better. Why do we need a different image of male sexuality? There are several problems with this image of young men’s sexuality. First, it’s true only for a minority of boys (Smiler, 2013). Even though only about 15 - 20% of boys have three or more partners in any given year (Dariotis et al., 2008; Humblet, Paul, & Dickson, 2003), we expect most, if not all, boys to be highly promiscuous. In essence, we tell the majority of boys they’re not normal. Instead of validating their desire for sexual contact within a relational context, we send boys the message that they’re somehow atypical. Girls are also taught that this image of male sexuality is the norm, and thus encouraged to develop a “defensive sexuality” (Tolman, 2002) that focuses on controlling boys’ sexuality instead of attending to their own sexual preferences, interests, and pleasures. -
