Race for the Senate, 1858 By 1850, the extension of slavery into new territories won during the Mexican War of 1846–48 provided a testing ground for competing visions of America. The passage of the Fugitive Slave Law in 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854 sparked a firestorm in Kansas and made slavery a central issue across the country. These events moved Lincoln to reenter political life and to speak out publicly against pro-slavery factions. The Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision in 1857 ruled that no African American could be a U.S. citizen. It ignited jubilation in the South and fierce protests in the North, and marked the end of compromise between the opposing groups.

Numerous distinguished scholars have shaped their entire career around the study of the United States presidency. Many other well-respected scholars of rhetoric focus their studies on the analysis of film. Both these areas of study have enriched rhetorical scholarship over the decades. Rarely, however, have studies of fictional film and studies of the historical U.S. president met. This is the intervention of this thesis. This thesis provides an in-depth examination of this phenomenon through an analysis of twelve feature-length fictional films. With public sentiment, nothing can fail: without it nothing can succeed.” Lincoln-Douglas Debate at Ottawa August 21.1858 Art – The sculpture, paintings, and drawings of Abraham Lincoln and the artists will be developed into interconnected lessons on art, reading, writing, and critical thinking. Research projects on the lives of the artists creating the Lincoln art will be developed to enlarge the student knowledge of art mediums and the artists’ background. The photographs of the oil paintings by Fletcher Ransom are being used with permission for use by the Illinois and Midland Railroad, Springfield, Illinois and further information will be provided in the unit on Art on the background of the artist and how these paintings came to be completed.
