Ives “All passes; art alone enduring stays to us; I lie bust outlasts the throne^ the coin, Tiberius.” A I an early day after the opening of the Exposition, it became evident that there was a large class of visitors made up of students, teachers and others, who desired a more extensive and intimate knowledge of individual works than could be gained from a cursory view, guided by a conventional catalogue. 11 undreds of letters from persons especially interested in acquiring intimate knowledge of the leading char¬ acteristics of the various schools of expression repre¬ sented have been received; indeed, for two months be¬ fore the opening of the department, every mail carried replies to such letters, giving outlines of study, courses of reading, and advice to intending visitors. -

Lincoln was against slavery. He was in favour of justice and equality. The END of the CIVIL WAR On April 9th, 1865, Genenal Lee and the Confederates surrended. It was the end of the war. HIS DEATH On April 14th, 1865 Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth ,in a theatre in Washington D.C. THE END OF SLAVERY On December 6th, 1865, the U.S Congress voted the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and slavery was abolished. The man the reporter saw that day, and the place where he lived, re- veal Lincoln as he really was—ambitious and hard-working, but very down to earth. It’s hard to imagine a legend as just a regular guy, but visitors to that same home today, now the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, get that sense through the artifacts of his daily life—the mahogany veneered horsehair rocker he relaxed in at the end of the day, his pigeon-holed writ- ing desk, even the khaki-colored box cushion he sat on when traveling. “This is where he was preparing for all of the wonderful things he did in THIS IS WHERE HE WAS PREPARING FOR ALL OF THE WONDERFUL THINGS HE DID IN WASHINGTON. HE DIDN’T JUST SHOW UP THERE. —SITE CURATOR SUSAN HAAKE Washington,” says Susan Haake, curator for the site. “He didn’t just show up there.” For many, the idea of Abraham Lincoln conjures up images of a little boy growing up in a one-room cabin or a gangly, somber-faced 55- year-old sitting in the Oval Office, struggling to hold the nation together. What people probably don’t often think about are the in-between years in Springfield, raising a family and laying the foundations for his path to the presidency. As the city’s website boasts, it’s the “home of Abraham Lin- coln,” where resides the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Mu- seum, his old law office, and even his account ledger on display in a downtown bank. -

Mr. Lincoln: The Life of Abraham Lincoln Professor Allen C. Guelzo THE TEACHING COMPANY ® Allen C. Guelzo, Ph.D. Henry R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era and Director of Civil War Era Studies, Gettysburg College Dr. Allen C. Guelzo is the Henry R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era and Director of Civil War Era Studies at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He is also the Associate Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. He was born in Yokohama, Japan, but grew up in Philadelphia. He holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in history from the University of Pennsylvania, where he wrote his dissertation under the direction of Bruce Kuklick, Alan C. Kors, and Richard S. Dunn. Dr. Guelzo has taught at Drexel University and, for 13 years, at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania. At Eastern, he was the Grace Ferguson Kea Professor of American History, and from 1998 to 2004, he was the founding dean of the Templeton Honors College at Eastern. Dr. Guelzo is the author of numerous books on American intellectual history and on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War era, beginning with his first work, Edwards on the Will: A Century of American Theological Debate, 1750– 1850 (Wesleyan University Press, 1989). His second book, For the Union of Evangelical Christendom: The Irony of the Reformed Episcopalians, 1873–1930 (Penn State University Press, 1994), won the Outler Prize for Ecumenical Church History of the American Society of Church History. SPONSORED BY THE WASHINGTON COLUMBUS CELEBRATION ASSOCIATION IN COORDINATION WITH THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE CELEBRATING CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL The Site In the years following the great quadricentennial (400th anniversary) celebration in 1892 of the achievements and discoveries of Christopher Cohnnbus, an effort was launched by the Knights of ~ Columbus to establish a monument to the ~ great discoverer. The U. S. Congress passed a law which mandated a Colwnbus Memorial in the nation's capital and appropriated $100,000 to cover the ~· ~, ·~-~=:;-;~~ construction costs. A commission was T" established composed of the secretaries of State and War, the chairmen of the House and Senate Committees on the Library of Congress, and the Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus. With the newly completed Union Railroad Station in 1907, plans focused toward locating the memorial on the plaz.a in front of this great edifice. After a series of competitions, sculptor Lorado Z. Taft of Chicago was awarded the contract. His plan envisioned what you see this day, a monument constructed of Georgia marble; a semi-circular fountain sixty-six feet broad and forty-four feet deep and in the center, a pylon crowned with a globe supported by four eagles oonnected by garland. A fifteen foot statue of Columbus, facing the U. S. Capitol and wrapped in!\ medieval mantle, stands in front of the pylon in the bow of a ship with its pn,, extending into the upper basin of the fountain terminating with a winged figurehead representing democracy. -

Burns ‘A baby’s unconsciousness’ in sculpture: modernism, nationalism, Frederick MacMonnies and George Grey Barnard in fin-de-siècle Paris In 1900 the French critic André Michel declared the US sculpture on view at the Exposition Universelle in Paris as ‘the affirmation of an American school of sculpture’.1 While the sculptors had largely ‘studied here and … remained faithful to our salons’, Michel concluded, ‘the influence of their social and ethnic milieu is already felt in a persuasive way among the best of them’.2 How did Michel come to declare this uniquely American school? What were the terms around which national temperament – what Michel describes as a ‘social and ethnic milieu’ – was seen as manifest in art? Artistic migration to Paris played a central role in the development of sculpture in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hundreds of US sculptors trained in drawing and modelling the human figure at the Ecole des beaux-arts and other Parisian ateliers.3 The circulation of people and objects incited a widening dialogue about artistic practice. During the emergence of modernism, debates arose about the relationships between tradition and innovation.4 Artists were encouraged to adopt conventions from academic practice, and subsequently seek an individuated intervention that built on and extended that art history. Discussions about emulation and invention were buttressed by political debates about cultural nationalism that constructed unique national schools.5 In 1891, for example, a critic bemoaned that US artists were imitative in their ‘thoughtless acceptance of whatever comes from Paris’.6 By this period, US artists were coming under fire for so fully adopting French academic approaches that their art seemed inextricably tied to its foreign model. -
