Newspaper of the Diocese of Jefferson City Giving and gratitude in a time of pandemic By Jay Nies There’s nothing like a crisis to shed light on the nature of Church finances. They aren’t about budgets, spread- sheets or those ubiquitous Sunday en- velopes. They’re about ministry. “Specifically, they’re about maximiz- ing the ministry we can do with the re- sources we have,” stated Joseph Braddock, Chief Financial Officer for the Jefferson City diocese. The COVID-19 pandemic has tightened those resources, even as it has revealed new opportunities for charity and outreach. In that way, it has highlighted the im- portance of a Christian ethic of return- ing to God a portion of His generosity. “As Christian stewards, we receive God’s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in jus- tice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord,” W. Shawn McKnight explained. That return includes a financial tithe. Prayer for a Communion of Desire Most Reverend W. Shawn McKnight, S.T.D. My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. Bishop of Jefferson City I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, renew my heart now with the power of Your Spirit. I embrace You and unite myself wholly to You. Unite me more closely to Your Body, the Church. And never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
