All Catholics must guard against it in their hearts and work to dismantle the systems that perpetuate it. They aren’t about budgets, spread- sheets or those ubiquitous Sunday en- velopes. They’re about ministry. “Specifically, they’re about maximiz- ing the ministry we can do with the re- sources we have,” stated Deacon Joseph Braddock, Chief Financial Officer for the Jefferson City diocese. The COVID-19 pandemic has tightened those resources, even as it has revealed new opportunities for charity and outreach. In that way, it has highlighted the im- portance of a Christian ethic of return- ing to God a portion of His generosity. “As Christian stewards, we receive God’s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in jus- tice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord,” Bishop W. Shawn McKnight explained. That return includes a financial tithe. Shawn McKnight to the chapel and asked about his just- completed visit to the prison’s Protec- tive Custody Unit (PCU). “It was interesting,” the bishop told him. “There are saints down there.” Bishop McKnight had accompanied Deacons John Hill and Christopher Sago into the PCU, a wing where the men live separately from the rest of the prison population for safety reasons. “The guys were asking about hav- ing the bishop come, and Deacon Hill said, ‘I don’t see why not,” said Dea- con Sago. “He asked, and the bishop said, ‘Well, yeah!’” Anticipation started building in September, when the men got word of the pending visit. “It’s like a birthday and Christmas all rolled into one for these guys,” said Dea- con Sago. “They are super excited.” Bishop McKnight visited with the Bishop W. LOUIS – Pope Francis has announced that Father Shawn McKnight of the Wichita, Kansas diocese has been named the fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Jefferson City, Missouri. This position has been held by the Most Reverend Bishop John Gaydos since June 25, 1997, when Pope John Paul II appointed him as the Bishop of Jefferson City. Bishop-designate McKnight taught graduate studies at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, from 2003 to 2008, where he also served as director of liturgy, dean of students, director of formation in the school of theology, and vice-president for development and alumni relations. He currently serves on the faculty of the St. Meinrad Permanent Deacon Formation Program. He served as chaplain at Newman University in Wichita from 2000 to 2001, where at the same time he was an adjunct professor of theology and visiting scholar at the university’s Bishop Gerber Institute of Catholic Studies.
