Another exciting and action packed year of badminton is once again upon us - and if you thought last year was a rather snug fit with everything that was packed in, this year may be likely to burst at the seams. This year we have all of our regular events on with the potential of having another Grand Prix event this year!! Stay tuned for more on this and where to get your tickets from. However, on to the serious side of things, we have our AGM & Awards night coming up on March 20 at Kooringal Golf club again. Now is the time to be thinking about how you want Badminton to be governed over the next twelve months at the up coming elec- tion!! If you have an interest in shaping the future of Badminton in the state of Victoria and feel you can contribute, please get yourself nominated - or if you know someone in this position, please discuss this option with them. We are always looking for people to come forward and assist us. Further we have the chance to recognize those people that have put into badminton over the past 12 months - so many people put so much in. Please nominate them and provide them with the opportunity of recognition within the sport at our Awards night. It is always a fantastic night that does take the time to recognize as many individuals as pos- sible! On a final note, this will be my last opportunity to contribute to the monthly newsletter as after three and a half years I am now moving on to new challenges, and scarily enough, a world beyond badminton (is it truly out there?) I would like to thank everyone who has supported Badminton in the time I have been here, and everyone who has assisted us evolving badminton within Victoria. I will be taking away a lot of good memories, and a wealth of experience. P: 9686 4777 www.badmintonvic.com.au 3 BADMINTON VICTORIA ‘Around the Courts’ RECENT RESULTS 2010 U13 INTERSTATE SERIES & REGIONAL TEAMS CHALLENGE 2010 kicked off to a great start with Victoria claiming 1st & 2nd spots in the inaugural event of 2010! The U13 events, hosted by WSBA saw less teams than in 2009 but it was still a great challenge and the standard of badminton was high. Congratulations to the players representing Victoria 1 (Darshand Gobinathan, Kunal Patil, Eric Qi, Andre Zopf & Janice Au, Joy Lai, Alice Lorincz, and Alice Wu) and Victoria 2 (Phillip Audley, Antony Guan, Sonny Li, John Taing & Maria Bianca, Adriana Phan, Lily Rigg and Maggie Wu). We’re proud of you! The Regional Teams Challenge saw Dulwich Hill, NSW take top honours and the Badmin- ton Academy of Victoria were runners up. Full results of both events below. Each event was fiercely contested with selection of the U/17 State Team for 2010 pending.     Facts and Records History of Badminton In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a lawn party at his country house in the village of Badminton, Gloucestershire. A game of Poona was played on that day and became popular among British society’s elite. The new party sport became known as “the Badminton game”. In 1877, the Bath Badminton Club was formed and developed the first official set of rules. The Badminton Association was formed at a meeting in Southsea on 13th September 1893. It was the first National Association in the world and framed the rules for the Association and for the game. The popularity of the sport increased rapidly with 300 clubs being introduced by the 1920’s. Rising to 9,000 shortly after World War Π. The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed in 1934 with nine founding members: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France and as a consequence the Badminton Association became the Badminton Association of England. From nine founding members, the IBF, now called the Badminton World Federation (BWF), has over 160 member countries. The future of Badminton looks bright. Badminton was officially granted Olympic status in the 1992 Barcelona Games. Indonesia was the dominant force in that first Olympic tournament, winning two golds, a silver and a bronze; the country’s first Olympic medals in its history. More than 1.1 billion people watched the 1992 Olympic Badminton competition on television. Eight years later, and more than a century after introducing Badminton to the world, Britain claimed their first medal in the Olympics when Simon Archer and Jo Goode achieved Mixed Doubles Bronze in Sydney.

    1 What Is Badminton And Its History The bat was initially referred to as Battledore. They continued to dominate, right until today. The players movement on the court were less organized. In fact, Denmark is known very well for bringing the standard of Badminton to a higher level in the history of badminton. When India was still a British Colony badminton was played mostly by the British military officers. Unfortunately we have yet to see England produce players of that class. The style of play in badminton has evolved over the years. It has been a while since the English had dominated the world of badminton. England Produced the Best Player in the History of Badminton. How the Name Badminton Came About. It was played by 2 Danish players. Technology made this possible. Deception also became an important element in winning badminton rallies. Peter Gade for example showed us INSANE deceptive shots. Among the Asian nations, the Chinese have been winning the most titles in almost every category, including the women s category. He even produced world class badminton deception in some major competitions. Badminton trainings are also more intense and some are even supported by sports science. The game of badminton started to become popular in India at a small town called Poona. Historical Development of Badminton. In the early 19th century, Great Britain produced many fine players. Apart from that, the strokes were also very different compared to how we hit the shuttle nowadays. The Chinese Badminton Association has informed the organisers that Dong, who had also pulled out from the World Championships in Glasgow due to high fever, was unable to compete due to injury. It was another set back for the championships which had earlier seen the withdrawal of reigning world champion Peter Rasmussen of Denmark while Malaysia's top doubles champ Yap Kim Hock pulled out due to shoulder injury, forcing his partner Cheah Soon Kit to find a new partner. In Dong's absence, former world champion Joko Suprianto of Indonesia has been seeded first in the six-star tournament while defending champion Ong Ewe Hock has been drawn to meet Joko in the final. According to the seedings released by the International Badminton Federation (IBF), Ewe Hock is in the same half with third seed Peter-Gade Christensen of Denmark. Christensen, who became the first European since Morten Frost Hansen to win a title in Asia when he won the Taiwan Open this year, is expected to clash with the Malaysian in the semifinal. Three-time champion Rashid Sidek has been seeded fourth and is likely to come up with Joko in the last four. Rashid beat him in the quarterfinals in the Olympi c Games in Atlanta.

Therefore, I have decided to choose badminton’s World Number One Men’s Singles player, Lee Chong Wei, to write an article about. He has won many championships like the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games and the World Series. He even made it into both the Beijing Olympic Games and the London Olympic Games and came out as first runner-up against China’s Lin Dan, who is his biggest rival. Even though he lost twice to him in the Olympic Games, he never gave up. That could inspire our schoolmates not to give up! In the article, I will include some personal information about him such as what made him play badminton, how hard his trainings were, his experiences and, more importantly, how he wants to promote badminton as a fun sport to many people around the world. I will also include photos of him doing a power smash, which is his signature move. I believe students would be very inspired by the short story he told.

And I choose badminton because I was more an individual, I was more on my own, I could take full responsibility, that’s what I liked at that time. Since I’ve been missing the team part and being part of the team, but I don’t regret my decision, probably it was a good decision. Chau Yap: You were quite good in soccer as well – I mean football? Peter Gade: Yes I was quite good, yeah. Chau Yap: Oh ok, what position did you play in? Peter Gade: Midfielder. Chau Yap: A mid-fielder, oh ok. That explains why you have so much stamina. Peter Gade: But quite attacking, but that also explains… Chau Yap: Yeah, ok, ok. So, it’s when you turned – you said sixteen, right, that you decided to play Badminton professionally, was it sixteen? Peter Gade: Professional was when I was seventeen, eighteen, I moved alone, I moved from Aarhus to the main capital, to the Copenhagen area and that was the final professional step and say now, this is what I want to do. But since I was fourteen, fifteen years old, I was very focused and this was the only thing I wanted to do. Chau Yap: What would be the national sport for Denmark is it Badminton or is it football? Peter Gade: No, I think it’s handball and football.
