Welcome back to another exciting and fast paced year of Badminton Vic

Firstly I hope everyone has had a fantastic, and safe, Christmas and new years period. Another exciting and action packed year of badminton is once again upon us - and if you thought last year was a rather snug fit with everything that was packed in, this year may be likely to burst at the seams.

This year we have all of our regular events on with the potential of having another Grand Prix event this year!! Stay tuned for more on this and where to get your tickets from.

However, on to the serious side of things, we have our AGM & Awards night coming up on March 20 at Kooringal Golf club again. Now is the time to be thinking about how you want Badminton to be governed over the next twelve months at the up coming elec- tion!! If you have an interest in shaping the future of Badminton in the state of Victoria and feel you can contribute, please get yourself nominated - or if you know someone in this position, please discuss this option with them. We are always looking for people to come forward and assist us.

Further we have the chance to recognize those people that have put into badminton over the past 12 months - so many people put so much in. Please nominate them and provide them with the opportunity of recognition within the sport at our Awards night. It is always a fantastic night that does take the time to recognize as many individuals as pos- sible!

On a final note, this will be my last opportunity to contribute to the monthly newsletter as after three and a half years I am now moving on to new challenges, and scarily enough, a world beyond badminton (is it truly out there?) I would like to thank everyone who has supported Badminton in the time I have been here, and everyone who has assisted us evolving badminton within Victoria. I will be taking away a lot of good memories, and a wealth of experience.

So for the final time, may your shuttles fly true

Mark Drehlich Executive Director

The board, staff & members of Badminton Victoria extend our sincere condolences to Judy Nyirati on the recent death of her mother Mrs Richards. Mrs Richards was a great supporter of Judy’s throughout her career and will be sadly missed.

10 BADMINTON VICTORIA ‘Around the Courts’ Blast from the Past

BY CLIFF MITCHELL Continued from December 2009 issue: Excerpts from 1948 Annual Report

• Some notable men representing Victoria were Bert Tonkin as Captain (who also is a VBA Council member representing the Methodists) the McCabe brothers Alan & Ar- thur, Cliff Cutt, Dick Russell (elder brother of Stan,) & the two notable ladies were Eva Robert & Ethel Peacock.

• Public interest in the Victorian & Australian Championships were due to the efforts of two Publicity officers with Radio interviews, Tramway & Railway advertising, posters & press reports being just some of the publicity.

• Other items of interest are the inventory of the VBA which is 1 Amplifier & 3 Speakers: 3 Field Telephones: 7 sets of Iron posts & 3 sets of Wooden posts: 2 Supporting Boxes: 36 Light shades, & 1 Typewriter, & all in good working order.

• After an investigation of Badminton in country areas a Regional council was ap- proved to be formed in an area that had two or more affiliated bodies that wished to combine to further the progress of the game within their region. The Gippsland Regional Association was the first to be formed & West Gippsland intends to form one very soon as well.

• A questionnaire in the form of a State-wide census to see how many players there were in Victoria & how many Shuttles were used this year by clubs as well. Another important question was the request of names of players who had lost their lives in both World Wars. • Unfortunately at the time of the report, clubs affiliated with Ballarat, Geelong & Portland Associations had not replied & unless the census is complete it will be considered valueless. • From those Associations that have supplied the information, the num- ber of players given are Gents 1517 & 1203 Ladies, & the number of shuttles used is over 20,000 although the shuttle total should double this figure when all clubs have responded.

• The Council would like to acknowledge the support given by Evans & Balfour, Mel- bourne Sports Depot, Hartley’s Ltd, C F Barnes Tennis Centre, Wathen & Dobson, Le- viathan Ltd, Spalding and Hedley’s in the form of donations & advertising. Their con- tributions have helped keep all tournament costs within reach of the younger play- ers & increased the popularity of our great game of badminton.

Additional archive material will be accepted in electronic form and included in future issues.
