The building, which was never completed, was constructed by King Francis I of France. Chambord is the largest château in the Loire Valley; it was built to serve as a hunting lodge for Francis I, who maintained his royal residences at the Châteaux of Blois and Amboise. The original design of the Château de Chambord is attributed, though with some doubt, to Domenico da Cortona; Leonardo da Vinci may also have been involved. Chambord was altered considerably during the twenty-eight years of its construction (1519–1547), during which it was overseen on-site by Pierre Nepveu. With the château nearing completion, Francis showed off his enormous symbol of wealth and power by hosting his old archrival, Emperor Charles V, at Chambord. In 1792, in the wake of the French Revolution, some of the furnishings were sold and timber removed. For a time the building was left abandoned, though in the 19th century some attempts were made at restoration. During the Second World War, art works from the collections of the Louvre and the Château de Compiègne were moved to the Château de Chambord. The château is now open to the public, receiving 700,000 visitors annually. Flooding in June 2016 damaged the grounds but not the château itself. © Copyright Smile of Europe – Destination Management Company – 2017 / 2018 3 FRANCE « The Wine Trail » 07 Days / 06 Nights • Tours - is a city located in the centre-west of France. It is the administrative centre of the Indre-et-Loire department and the largest city in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France (although it is not the capital, which is the region's second-largest city, Orléans). In 2012, the city of Tours had in the whole metropolitan area a population of nearly 0.5 million people. Tours stands on the lower reaches of the River Loire, between Orléans and the Atlantic coast. The surrounding district, the traditional province of Touraine, is known for its wines, for the alleged perfection (as perceived by some speakers and for historical reasons) of its local spoken French, and for the Battle of Tours (732). The city is also the end-point of the annual Paris–Tours cycle race. © Copyright Smile of Europe – Destination Management Company – 2017 / 2018 4 FRANCE « The Wine Trail » 07 Days / 06 Nights • Tours, France – optional sightseeing : 1) Tours Cathedral Saint-Gatien 2) Place Plumereau 3) Old Historical Centre of Tours and its Tudor Buildings 4) Flower Market 5) Ruins of the Basilica of St. Martin of Tours 6) Jardin des Prébendes 7) Hotel de Ville 8) Hotel Gouin 9) Jardin de la Prefecture 10) Pont Wilson. • About « Wine of the Loire Valley » : the Loire Valley wine region includes the French wine regions situated along the Loire River from the Muscadet region near the city of Nantes on the Atlantic coast to the region of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé just southeast of the city of Orléans in north central France. In between are the regions of Anjou, Saumur, Bourgueil, Chinon, and Vouvray. The Loire Valley itself follows the river through the Loire province to the river's origins in the Cévennes but the majority of the wine production takes place in the regions noted above. The area includes 87 appellations under the Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC), Vin Délimité de Qualité Superieure (VDQS) and Vin de pays systems. While the majority of production is white wine from the Chenin blanc, Sauvignon blanc and Melon de Bourgogne grapes, there are red wines made (especially around the Chinon region) from Cabernet franc. In addition to still wines, rosé, sparkling and dessert wines are also produced. With Crémant production throughout the Loire, it is the second largest sparkling wine producer in France after Champagne. Among these different wine styles, Loire wines tend to exhibit characteristic fruitiness with fresh, crisp flavors-especially in their youth. The Loire Valley has a long history of winemaking dating back to the 1st century. In the High Middle Ages, the wines of the Loire Valley were the most esteemed wines in England and France, even more prized than those from Bordeaux. • Wine Tasting Session LOIRE – « AOC selection » : Smile of Europe • Overnight in Tours (FRANCE) – preferred choice of accommodation as per - Appendix 4 Directory - ( 1 shared dbl / twin room ) Day 2: TOURS – POITIERS - BORDEAUX (B) • Available types of accommodation : Hotel (First 3 ½***) - Hotel (Deluxe 4****) – Hotel (Prestige 5*****) – Château (First 3 ½***) - Château (Deluxe 4****) - Château (Prestige 5*****) - Date : day 00 Month -2017. • Complimentary breakfast at your Hotel or at the Château • Poitiers – is a city on the Clain river in west-central France. Two major military battles took place near the city: in 732, the Battle of Poitiers (also known as the Battle of Tours), in which the Franks commanded by Charles Martel halted the expansion of the Umayyad Caliphate, and in 1356, the Battle of Poitiers, a key victory for the English forces during the Hundred Years' War.
