The building, which was never completed, was constructed by King Francis I of France. Chambord is the largest château in the Loire Valley; it was built to serve as a hunting lodge for Francis I, who maintained his royal residences at the Châteaux of Blois and Amboise. The original design of the Château de Chambord is attributed, though with some doubt, to Domenico da Cortona; Leonardo da Vinci may also have been involved. Chambord was altered considerably during the twenty-eight years of its construction (1519–1547), during which it was overseen on-site by Pierre Nepveu. With the château nearing completion, Francis showed off his enormous symbol of wealth and power by hosting his old archrival, Emperor Charles V, at Chambord. In 1792, in the wake of the French Revolution, some of the furnishings were sold and timber removed. For a time the building was left abandoned, though in the 19th century some attempts were made at restoration. During the Second World War, art works from the collections of the Louvre and the Château de Compiègne were moved to the Château de Chambord. The château is now open to the public, receiving 700,000 visitors annually. Flooding in June 2016 damaged the grounds but not the château itself.

The Cathedral of Reims (damaged by the Germans during the First World War but restored since) housed the Holy Ampulla (Sainte Ampoule) containing the Saint Chrême (chrism), allegedly brought by a white dove (the Holy Spirit) at the baptism of Clovis in 496. It was used for the anointing, the most important part of the coronation of French kings.

• Reims – optional tours & sightseeing : 1) Reims Cathedral : (Notre-Dame de Reims) - the French equivalent, somewhat, for England's Westminster Abbey, the cathedral at Reims was the church in which numerous French monarchs were officially crowned. Reims is one of the later Gothic cathedrals and renowned for its height. There is a fine interior west facade with carvings of Biblical scenes; some fine 13c stained glass in the high windows of the nave and choir; and windows by Marc Chagall (in the eastern chapel) and the two local artists Jacques and Brigitte Simon. The south transept window by Jacques Simon shows themes linked with champagne including a portrait of the monk who invented it, Dom Perignon ; 2) The Porte de Mars : a large late-Roman period triumphal arch ; 3) Hotel Jean-Baptiste de la Salle : a fine Renaissance mansion ; 4) The so-called Hotel des Comtes de Champagne is a fine Gothic merchant's house ; 5) Reims Town Hall : dates from the 17th century. Behind it on the right is a fine art nouveau building originally for Mumm champagne, with mosaics showing the champagne making process ; 6) Saint Remi Abbey & Basilica & Museum : a Romanesque church some way south of the centre of town. 7) Boulingrin Covered Market : built in 1927, the Halles (covered market) du Boulingrin was the result of an architectural competition launched in 1922 for the construction of a wholesale and retail market. It was closed down in 1988. The slightly reinforced concrete vault overlooking the stalls from a height of 19.85 metres is only 7 cm thick. The building became a listed monument, and was re-commissioned in 2012. 8) Villa Demoiselle : as the flagship of a blend of Art nouveau and Art déco, Villa Demoiselle was built from 1904 to 1908 according to plans by the architect Louis Sorel. In 2004, Paul- François Vranken, president of 9) Vranken Champagnes, acquired the villa and undertook major restoration work which lasted almost five years. The very best craftsmen were engaged to restore the villa to its former glory whilst remaining faithful to the style of the era. Step back in time and come to discover the champagne house in conjunction with a visit or reception and admire its decor that boasts a unique sophistication. The Villa Demoiselle is neighbour on 10) Pommery Cellars. It is surrounded by a 5 800 m2 large garden and houses a collection of golden vintages.
