Tournament Prospects In its first "member" season in the WCHA, the UMD Bulldogs must rely heavily on sophomores to form one for- ward line, man three-fourths of the defense and split the goaltending. "This inexperience could really hurt us in our first two series of the season (Michigan Tech and North Da- kota)," said Coach Ralph Romano. "But by mid-season- barring injuries-I expect us to be as strong as last season. " The Bulldogs played 20 games against WC HA teams last season. Although they had their troubles with T ech and Dakota like everybody else, Dakota, Michigan State and Colorado all dropped games to the Bulldogs. The sophomore look dominates defense where senior Bob Hill, whom Romano considers the equal of any blue- liner in the country, is the lone veteran . He will be joined by Lee Sutton, a sophomore from St. Paul Breck. Tom Ahrens and John McKay, a combination out of Duluth East, will form the pure sophomore pair. The Bulldogs' leading All-American candidate Keith (Huffer)Chrisciansen will center a line that scored 67 goals last season. His wingmates are junior Pat Franc i s co and senior Mike Tok who led the club in individual goals with 24. Captain Owen Rogers, a senior, has been moved to center to form a second line with wings Dick Maertz and Bobby Bell. This trio thrives on forechecking and c apital- izing on opposition mistakes. Center Elroy Froiland from Thief River Falls and wings Dick Thompson of Baudette and Tom Mrozik of Du- luth Central appear likely to form the sophomore line. The goaltending duties are up for grabs between senior Ron Hill and Dave LeBlanc from Ft. William who was voted the outstanding freshman last season. Romano plans to alternate them during the regular season until one estab- lishes superiority. After his nine forwards, four defensemen and two goalies, Romano's available talent drops off sharply. Any major injuries could deal a crushing blow to the Bulldogs' season. Coaching Staff HEAD COACH RALPH ROMANO Native of Fort William, Ontario ... goaltender in minor league system ... came to Duluth Central as high school junior ... enrolled at UMD in 1952 ... earned three varsity letters as Bulldog goaltender. Active in all phases of student activity-R.0.T.C., stu- dent government, publications ... spent three years as Air Force navigator. Joined sports staff of Duluth Herald and News-Tribune after service tour ... came to UMD for 1959-60 season ... reams posted 30-8 record during two MIAC seasons ... led Bulldogs out of MIAC through independent status ro WCHA membership. Active in American Hockey Coaches Association ... elected to AHCA Board of Governors last spring. UMD's Athletic Business Manager with responsibilities in tickets and publicity as well as coaching. Married to former Barbara Pederson, a UMD graduate ... five children, Ralph Jr. 8, Elaine 7, Jeffrey 5, Kevin 4, Paul l . ASSISTAN T COACH MICHAEL HALEY Assistant coach Mike Haley, one of the finest goaltend- ers in UMD annals, enters his fifth season on the staff. Haley still owns the UMD record for the best goaltend- ing average in a season, set during his senior year (1960-61) at 2.7 goals per game. This performance also earned him the squad's Most Valuable Player award. It has naturally fallen upon Haley to correct the flaws of the goaltending corps. Haley prepped at Minneapolis Southwest where he also gained the Most Valuable Player award. He moved to Duluth with his family the following year. When not coaching hockey, Haley works in the sales department of Minnesota Power and Light Company. FRESHMAN COACH BOB LUND First season with B ulldogs ... completing work on el- ementary education degree ... hockey experience with UMD, Warroad Lakers and U.S . Nationals ... native of Salo, Minn . Warroad high school graduate ... placing particular em- phasis on preparing defensemen. UMD HOCKE1 ROSTER 1965-66 NAME POS. AGE HEIGHT WEIGHT CLASS HOMETOWN 12 Ahrens, Thomas D 19 6 165 So. ARCHIVES PRINT 13/15/21 1982-83 lVJ.LDIA GUID~ · .. 1982-8) . ; ' \ :ti s~fl' \your host, UMD I[ II[ 1-- UMD is 35 years old this year and if you were to describe its development over the years in one word, that word would certainly be 'growth.' Before UMD became a coordinate campus of the University of Minnesota in 1947, the site of the present day campus was nothing more than brush and woods. By the early 1950s, though, the campus was al- ready taking shape with the Science Building (now called the Chemistry Building) and the Physical Education Building in place. Administrators had a far-reaching campus plan for UMD's orderly development to 1970. That plan envisioned a student body of 3,500 by 1970. More than 5,000 students actually were enrolled by then. Today, as indicated by this year's record enrollment of 7,700 plus students, UMD continues its steady growth. The school offers more instructional programs than ever for both undergraduate and gradu- ate students in six colleges and schools with major fields of study in everything from the natural sciences and social sciences to the humanities and fine arts. UMD offers two years of basic science in the School of Medicine with students transferring to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities School of Medicine following satisfactory completion of UMD's program. Students choose from 72 graduate majors and 1,900 courses. UMD offers four associate (two-year) degrees, 10 bachelor's degrees, six master's degrees in 17 fields and has programs leading to teacher licensure in 41 areas.
