As many of you may have heard, it has become known to the public that the NYPD and the CIA have been receiving tips on potential terrorist attacks, as well as team- ing up and spying on the New York population. Some people seem to think that this is morally wrong, and normally I would agree with them. However, due to the anni- versary of what is one of the United States’ most tragic occurrences, I have to say that I agree with what the NYPD and CIA are doing. In my opinion it is smart to spy on people, whether it be domestic or not, simply because the “danger rate” is too high. The decision to keep an eye out for potential terrorists, especially since the 10-year anniversary of the Twin Towers’ collapse is approaching quickly, is one of the better decisions that can be made. Now I am not saying that spying, as a whole, is a good thing; indeed, it is a restriction on people’s privacy. However, the measures that are being taken in order to protect our country are only being taken in the defense of national security, not because spying on people is a new trend. There are two primary reasons I feel that this action is OK. First, it isn’t just one ethnicity or religious group that is being monitored. If the NYPD was just spying on Mus- lims, it would be a different matter entirely, and although Muslims are the main focus of the spying, they are not the only ones being target- ed.
