\ :ti s~fl' \your host, UMD I[ II[ 1--

UMD is 35 years old this year and if you were to describe its development over the years in one word, that word would certainly be 'growth.' Before UMD became a coordinate campus of the University of in 1947, the site of the present day campus was nothing more than brush and woods. By the early 1950s, though, the campus was al- ready taking shape with the Science Building (now called the Chemistry Building) and the Physical Education Building in place. Administrators had a far-reaching campus plan for UMD's orderly development to 1970. That plan envisioned a student body of 3,500 by 1970. More than 5,000 students actually were enrolled by then. Today, as indicated by this year's record enrollment of 7,700 plus students, UMD continues its steady growth. The school offers more instructional programs than ever for both undergraduate and gradu- ate students in six colleges and schools with major fields of study in everything from the natural sciences and social sciences to the humanities and fine arts. UMD offers two years of basic science in the School of Medicine with students transferring to the , Twin Cities School of Medicine following satisfactory completion of UMD's program. Students choose from 72 graduate majors and 1,900 courses. UMD offers four associate (two-year) degrees, 10 bachelor's degrees, six master's degrees in 17 fields and has programs leading to teacher licensure in 41 areas. The campus, situated in an appealing residential area overlooking Lake Superior, has facilities that are unique to the area with 32 major buildings in all, including the renowned Tweed Museum of Art, the modernistic Marshall Performing Arts Center and the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium. UMD's 35 years of continued growth is a prime example of the area's commitment to quality higher education. the athletic department staff

ROMANO The UMD Athletic Department sponsors 15 varsity sports for men and women under the guidance of Athletic Director . An alumnus of UMD, Romano previously served the Athletic Department as sports publicity director, ticket manager, and business manager before he was elevated to the athletic director's seat in 1969 following the retirement of Lloyd Peterson. Before accepting the athletic director's responsibilities, Romano also doubled as the university's hockey coach for nine years (1959-68), and he is credited with leading UMD into the prestigious WCHA in 1966. Romano's assistant athletic director is former Bulldog hockey star Bruce McLeod, who first became the department's business manager in 1969 following graduation from UMD. He also served as sports in- formation director before being named to his current post in 1977. Linda Larson joined the staff in 1975 as the coordinator of women's athletics, and she is recognized as one of the most dynamic and productive leaders of women's sports in the state. She is also the women's basketball coach. Dukes Knutson, a 1973 UMD grad, was named sports information director last July after nine years of teaching and coaching at Denfeld High School in Duluth. The financial transactions of the department are handled by business manager Al Nyquist, who joined the department following graduation from UMD in 1980. The unheralded but vital chores of managing UMD's equipment are taken care of by equipment manager Rick Menz, who completed his studies at UMD in 1982. Betty Oland returns as the team's trainer. The Bulldogs compete in three different conferences. All men's teams except hockey belong to the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (N lC) while the hockey squad is a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). Richard Ojakangas, the men's faculty representative, is currently on a sabbatical leave of absence, and Ron KNUTSON Caple of UMD's chemistry department is serving as his replacement. The women's teams compete in the Northern Sun Conference (NSC) with Pat Merrier of the business department acting as faculty repre- sentative. UMD has a history of producing outstanding athletic teams as evidenced by the five conference championships or co-championships won last season.

"THE KEY IS GOING TO BE WHETHER OR NOT WE GET SCORING PRODUCTION OUT OF CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS, AND WHETHER OR NOT OUR TEAM DEFENSIVE PLAY IMPROVES. WE'RE STILL A YOUNG TEAM , BUT WE DO HA VE SOME EXPERIENCE AT ALL POSITIONS, WHICH SHOULD HELP US ." -UMD Coach KEY PLAYERS LOST: The Bulldogs graduate only three seniors from last year's squad, and all were forwards - left wing Scott Carlston, center and captain Bill Oleksuk, and right wing Gary DeGrio. Carlston led the Bulldogs in scoring last year with 30 points and 44 assists while Oleksuk tallied 21 goals and 27 assists. DeGrio, who has signed a contract with the , netted 18 goals and 17 assists. "It's going to be very difficult to fill their shoes," Sertich said. "Scott, Bill and Gary had outstanding collegiate careers for us and will continue to play hockey elsewhere." THE TENDING: Bob Mason and Jon "Rusty" Downing shared the goal- tending chores last year as freshmen, and Ron "Jolly" Erickson was the regular goalie in 1980-81, so the Bulldogs bring a wealth of experience to the nets in '82-83. "Goaltending should be one of our strengths this year," Sertich said. "Bobby and Rusty each had some strong games last year, although they both lacked consistency, and Ron has had some big games for us in the past." Mason appears to have the inside track for the No. 1 position, but Sertich said a successful WCHA requires depth in the nets, and UMD will have that this year. THE DEFENSE: Sertich expects a lot of competition for defensive jobs heading into the '82-83 season as virtually everyone on the blueline returns from last year. Junior Tom Kurvers and sophomore Jim Johnson are coming off strong years, and senior Jim Graven begins his third season as a regular. Other veteran defensemen include seniors Rob Murray and George Crookshank, and junior Bill Grillo. THE OFFENSE: With the loss of Carlston, Oleksuk, and DeGrio, Sertich points to seniors Gregg Moore and Dan Fishback as the players who must take over the scoring leadership. "Gregg and Dan had great seasons last year, and they'll have to be our offensive leaders this year if we're going to go anywhere." Moore tied a school record for most goals in a season with 31 and finished second in the WCHA scoring race. "We're a little thin right now up the middle and on the right side," Sertich acknowledged, "but we're excited about the potential of our returnees and a good crop of freshmen. " Mike Krensing, who played defense last year, will be returned to the front lines as a center this season in hopes of manufacturing more Bulldog goals. Other veterans Sertich expects to contribute include Bob Lakso (12-11-23); Bill Mason (11 -9-20); Tom Herzig (4-6-10); John Santori (0-2-2); and Mike Valesano (2-7-9). Players who didn't see much action last year but who could win regular jobs this season include Kevin Smalley, Dan May, Dean Ekman, and Mark Baron. THE NEWCOMERS: Sertich is confident that several of the Bulldog recruits can move in and play WCHA hockey right away. Among the more promising freshmen are Norm Maciver, defense; center of Aurora-Hoyt Lakes; and wingers Mark Odnokon and , who played at Prince Albert last year. Other incoming freshmen who could win varsity spots are center Brian Glynn, Tonawanda, NY; defenseman Guy Gosselin, Rochester, MN; wing Brad Johnson, Silver Bay, MN; defenseman Gary Keiger, White Bear Lake, MN; center Skeeter Moore, Duluth, MN; and center Jim Toninato, Bemidji, MN. head coach -- -- -

mike sertich

Mike Sertich is a man of intense pride. When he sets out to do a job, not only does he complete it, but he completes it well. And that's a characteristic Sertich expects from his hockey players. "I feel 50 fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of such a fine institution as UMD, and I want our players to appreciate the education and experience this school and its hockey program is giving them," he said. "We take too many things for granted in life, and playing hockey for UMD is a once- in-a-lifetime privilege. Part of my job, as I see it, is to make sure our players make the most of their opportunity." There are certain things one can expect Following graduation from UMD in 1969, from a Sertich-coached team. Conditioning Sertich joined the faculty at Grand Rapids is one. He reflects an attitude common to the seniors on the squad in that he seeks to complete his career at UMD not by emphasizing individual statistics, but rather by improving the team standing. Serving as captain is nothing new for Jim as he led his Wayzata Trojans· during his senior year in high school, winning All-Conference and All-State honors.
