University of Minnesota, Duluth Hockey Media Guide (1982-1983) ARCHIVES PRINT 13/15/21 1982-83 lVJ.LDIA GUID~ · .. 1982-8) . ; ' \ :ti s~fl' \your host, UMD I[ II[ 1-- UMD is 35 years old this year and if you were to describe its development over the years in one word, that word would certainly be 'growth.' Before UMD became a coordinate campus of the University of Minnesota in 1947, the site of the present day campus was nothing more than brush and woods. By the early 1950s, though, the campus was al- ready taking shape with the Science Building (now called the Chemistry Building) and the Physical Education Building in place. Administrators had a far-reaching campus plan for UMD's orderly development to 1970. That plan envisioned a student body of 3,500 by 1970. More than 5,000 students actually were enrolled by then. Today, as indicated by this year's record enrollment of 7,700 plus students, UMD continues its steady growth. The school offers more instructional programs than ever for both undergraduate and gradu- ate students in six colleges and schools with major fields of study in everything from the natural sciences and social sciences to the humanities and fine arts. UMD offers two years of basic science in the School of Medicine with students transferring to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities School of Medicine following satisfactory completion of UMD's program. Students choose from 72 graduate majors and 1,900 courses. UMD offers four associate (two-year) degrees, 10 bachelor's degrees, six master's degrees in 17 fields and has programs leading to teacher licensure in 41 areas. The campus, situated in an appealing residential area overlooking Lake Superior, has facilities that are unique to the area with 32 major buildings in all, including the renowned Tweed Museum of Art, the modernistic Marshall Performing Arts Center and the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium. UMD's 35 years of continued growth is a prime example of the area's commitment to quality higher education. the athletic department staff ROMANO The UMD Athletic Department sponsors 15 varsity sports for men and women under the guidance of Athletic Director Ralph Romano. An alumnus of UMD, Romano previously served the Athletic Department as sports publicity director, ticket manager, and business manager before he was elevated to the athletic director's seat in 1969 following the retirement of Lloyd Peterson. Before accepting the athletic director's responsibilities, Romano also doubled as the university's hockey coach for nine years (1959-68), and he is credited with leading UMD into the prestigious WCHA in 1966. Romano's assistant athletic director is former Bulldog hockey star Bruce McLeod, who first became the department's business manager in 1969 following graduation from UMD. He also served as sports in- formation director before being named to his current post in 1977. Linda Larson joined the staff in 1975 as the coordinator of women's athletics, and she is recognized as one of the most dynamic and productive leaders of women's sports in the state. She is also the women's basketball coach. Dukes Knutson, a 1973 UMD grad, was named sports information director last July after nine years of teaching and coaching at Denfeld High School in Duluth. The financial transactions of the department are handled by business manager Al Nyquist, who joined the department following graduation from UMD in 1980. The unheralded but vital chores of managing UMD's equipment are taken care of by equipment manager Rick Menz, who completed his studies at UMD in 1982. Betty Oland returns as the team's trainer. The Bulldogs compete in three different conferences. All men's teams except hockey belong to the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (N lC) while the hockey squad is a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). Richard Ojakangas, the men's faculty representative, is currently on a sabbatical leave of absence, and Ron KNUTSON Caple of UMD's chemistry department is serving as his replacement. The women's teams compete in the Northern Sun Conference (NSC) with Pat Merrier of the business department acting as faculty repre- sentative. UMD has a history of producing outstanding athletic teams as evidenced by the five conference championships or co-championships won last season. / _- , OLAND MENZ CAPLE MERRIER 1981-82 Final Statistics OVERALL (1 6-21 -3) WCHA ONLY (9-17-2) Name-Pos.
