Inside Back Cover A Message from the WAHA President… Welcome to the exciting new hockey season. Congratulations are in order to all of you as WAHA achieved its goal of exceeding 20,000 skaters this past season. As we work our way through this season, be sure to stay in touch with and work closely with your Regional Directors. Their contact information is on the WAHA website www.wahahockey.com. Let’s be sure to make this an exciting and safe time for all skaters, regardless of age, skill and gender. Hockey is a sport for everyone, and we need to insure that. Finally, let’s make it a point of emphasis this year to tap into the girls who aren’t playing hockey and grow that side of the game. We have had a lot of success, but growing the game for girls will expand our numbers greatly. LET’S PLAY HOCKEY! Al Deming WAHA HISTORY No history of the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association, or WAHA, as it is popularly known, would be complete without an historical background of the sport in the State of Wisconsin. Although best known as a youth organization, the foundations of WAHA lay in participation by adult teams. It appears that the first organized hockey in Wisconsin was played in Superior in the late 1890’s, where a club was assembled that played against teams from Duluth and Two

  • Since Blazing Into a New Era with the Opening of the Colorado Springs
Since blazing into a new era with the opening of the Colorado Springs World Arena in January 1998, Tiger Hockey has continued to solidify its position among the nation’s most elite Division I programs. With six league titles, 16 home-ice playoff berths and a dozen NCAA tournament bids tucked away since 1994, Colorado College keeps adding chapter after chapter to its fabled history. CC’s recent string of success, which includes last season’s appearance in the national quarterfinals preceded by trips to the “Frozen Four” in 1996, 1997 and 2005, speaks volumes for the modern-day version of a program that has spanned eight decades. Sure, when Scott Owens took over as head coach in 1999, he inherited a perennial powerhouse. But where does the tale really begin? How has little Colorado College, a private liberal arts and sciences college with an enrollment of less than 2,000 students, maintained such elite status in a sport filled with Division I giants? TWO CONCEPTS COME TO MIND: Tradition. From its pre-World War II roots, to its hosting of the first 10 NCAA Tournaments and co-founding of the WCHA, the school has influenced college hockey's growth from infancy. Commitment. Proving that academic and athletic excellence can co-exist in a small campus environment, CC has relied on vision, hard work and creativity to revive a program that many others nationwide now envy. THE EARLY YEARS Colorado College Hockey got its start in January of 1938, when the Broadmoor Hotel converted its seldom-used indoor riding academy into an ice rink.

DETERMINING THE TOP ALL-TIME COLLEGE COACHES THROUGH MARKOV CHAIN-BASED RANK AGGREGATION MELISSA JAY, VENKATASAI GANESH KARAPAKULA, AND EMMA KRAKOFF Abstract. We develop a mathematical model that determines the \best all-time college coach(es)" of the past century in a given sport. We propose ranking college coaches through Markov chain- based aggregation of ranked lists using holistic criteria. Our model synthesizes four full or partial ranked lists based on win percentages, victories, career durations, and effort levels to produce the final comprehensive rankings. As a demonstration, we determine that Ron Mason, Augie Garrido, and Gus Donoghue are the top all-time college coaches of the past century in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey, baseball, and men's soccer, respectively. Our general model is applicable not only across all possible sports but also to both male and female coaches. Additionally, it accounts for differences among coaches in their coaching time-periods. Introduction In this paper, we develop a mathematical model that determines, using various criteria, the \best all-time college coach(es)" of the past century in a given sport. Ranking college coaches based on a single factor, such as the win percentage, tends to be biased.

  • University of Minnesota, Duluth Hockey Media Guide (1982-1983)
ARCHIVES PRINT 13/15/21 1982-83 lVJ.LDIA GUID~ · .. 1982-8) . ; ' \ :ti s~fl' \your host, UMD I[ II[ 1-- UMD is 35 years old this year and if you were to describe its development over the years in one word, that word would certainly be 'growth.' Before UMD became a coordinate campus of the University of Minnesota in 1947, the site of the present day campus was nothing more than brush and woods. By the early 1950s, though, the campus was al- ready taking shape with the Science Building (now called the Chemistry Building) and the Physical Education Building in place. Administrators had a far-reaching campus plan for UMD's orderly development to 1970. That plan envisioned a student body of 3,500 by 1970. More than 5,000 students actually were enrolled by then. Today, as indicated by this year's record enrollment of 7,700 plus students, UMD continues its steady growth. The school offers more instructional programs than ever for both undergraduate and gradu- ate students in six colleges and schools with major fields of study in everything from the natural sciences and social sciences to the humanities and fine arts. UMD offers two years of basic science in the School of Medicine with students transferring to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities School of Medicine following satisfactory completion of UMD's program. Students choose from 72 graduate majors and 1,900 courses. UMD offers four associate (two-year) degrees, 10 bachelor's degrees, six master's degrees in 17 fields and has programs leading to teacher licensure in 41 areas.
