It might surprise you to know that, from my It might surprise you to know that, from my experience, one of the most controversial experience, one of the most controversial topics that I can preach on is the subject of topics that I can preach on is the subject of REST. It is a significant theme that runs REST. It is a significant theme that runs throughout the bible. It begins at the begin- throughout the bible. It begins at the begin- ning, with God resting on the seventh day of ning, with God resting on the seventh day of creation which is the model for our Sabbath creation which is the model for our Sabbath break from the working week. Of course, somewhat ironically what was meant to provide us with freedom and recovery was what was meant to provide us with freedom and recovery was often used by the more overzealous amongst us to restrict, often used by the more overzealous amongst us to restrict, simply adding to our burdens. And so, it is with some relief simply adding to our burdens. And so, it is with some relief that we find Jesus declaring himself the ‘Lord of the Sabbath’ that we find Jesus declaring himself the ‘Lord of the Sabbath’ in the New Testament and reclaiming the Sabbath as being in the New Testament and reclaiming the Sabbath as being for our benefit and fulfilment.
