It is a significant theme that runs REST. It is a significant theme that runs throughout the bible. It begins at the begin- throughout the bible. It begins at the begin- ning, with God resting on the seventh day of ning, with God resting on the seventh day of creation which is the model for our Sabbath creation which is the model for our Sabbath break from the working week. The rest was break from the working week. The rest was not just limited to humanity but applied to not just limited to humanity but applied to animals and the land as well. Of course, somewhat ironically animals and the land as well. Of course, somewhat ironically what was meant to provide us with freedom and recovery was what was meant to provide us with freedom and recovery was often used by the more overzealous amongst us to restrict, often used by the more overzealous amongst us to restrict, simply adding to our burdens. And so, it is with some relief simply adding to our burdens. And so, it is with some relief that we find Jesus declaring himself the ‘Lord of the Sabbath’ that we find Jesus declaring himself the ‘Lord of the Sabbath’ in the New Testament and reclaiming the Sabbath as being in the New Testament and reclaiming the Sabbath as being for our benefit and fulfilment. A principle that Christ often mod- for our benefit and fulfilment. A principle that Christ often mod- elled by taking himself and his followers away from the busi- elled by taking himself and his followers away from the busi- ness of work to pray, recharge and rest. I could go on about ness of work to pray, recharge and rest. I could go on about the importance of rest throughout scripture (I do like to go on) the importance of rest throughout scripture (I do like to go on) but it is clearly an important and necessary part of being hu- but it is clearly an important and necessary part of being hu- man and part of God’s design for us. man and part of God’s design for us. I think that is par- we live in does not lend itself easily to rest. I think that is par- ticularly true in a place like St Alban’s. We must always be ticularly true in a place like St Alban’s. We must always be producing, always doing, always achieving, always moving, producing, always doing, always achieving, always moving, always consuming etc., etc. In modern day Britain doing, earn- always consuming etc., etc. In modern day Britain doing, earn- ing, achieving is how we find and maintain our value, identity ing, achieving is how we find and maintain our value, identity and worth. To rest is to put this all at risk and so we are out of and worth. To rest is to put this all at risk and so we are out of practise when those fleeting moments come along.
