The most important natural sites are Hossa National Park, Martinselkonen Nature Reserve and Yli-Vuokki Recreation Area. The battles of the Winter War in Suomussalmi, and especially on the Raate Road, attract tens of thousands of people every year. Information on how to fight can be found is at the Winter War Museum Raatteen Portti. Also close to the Raatteen Portti is the Winter War Monument. Along the museum road is the Russian monument, the restored Purasjoki station, the Raathe battles monument in Likoharju and the Frontier Guard Museum is located at the eastern end of the road. This tour is recommended for tour operators from Japan, India, USA, France, Ireland, Netherlands and Germany speaking countries from Europe. Attitudes to the wolf divide Finns, and the wolf itself causes opinion to change fast once it has arrived in new areas. The wolf is a perpetual problem environmentally, something people have to live with on a daily basis. But what is the importance of social sustainability and how can protection of the wolf be reconciled with what local people see as a decline in the quality of life? How should the wolf issue be managed and who should act in what situation? These are the questions which have to be addressed in preparations for a national policy on wolves. Studies relating to policy on large carnivores for the University of Helsinki’s Institute for Rural Research and Training (Ruralia) represent a breakthrough, yet people in rural communities have always been at the centre of research. The sustainable use of natural resources is becoming more and more about socio-economic issues, with ecology obviously imposing its own set of condi- tions.

  • The Battle of Suomussalmi: December, 1941
C3i Magazine, C3i Nr.2 (1993) Arctic Storm: White Death – The Battle of Suomussalmi: December, 1941 By David James Ritchie A key element in the Soviet plan for the conquest of Finland was a rapid drive to the Gulf of Bothnia at Kemi and Oulu, slicing that small nation in half at its narrow waist and cutting overland communications with pro-Finnish Sweden. Vasili Chuikov's 9th Army was to accomplish this task by means of two independent thrusts. While one rifle corps marched toward Kemi through Salla and Rovaniemi in the north, Chuikov's main force would mount a multi-column advance from the Juntusranta-Raate area and from Rebola that would rol l through the Finnish towns of Suomussalmi and Kuhmo, respectively, before converging on Oulu. In the event, the subsidiary Salla op eration and the flanking drive from Rebola got nowhere, and both sides' attention soon focused on the main thrust through Suomussalm i. Into the Jaws... Occupying the shortest axis of advance toward Oulu, Suomussalmi had most of Chuikov's attention from day one. It also got his best u nit, the powerful 45th Rifle Corps, with 48,000 men, 335 guns and 150 tanks and armored cars in two divisions: Divcom Zelentsov's 16 3rd Rifle Division and Divcom Vinogradov's 44th Motorized Rifle Division. On 30 November 1939, the Mongolians of 163rd Rifle Divisio n advanced on Suomussalmi in two columns. The northern column (81st and 662nd Rifle Regiments, with supporting tanks and cavalry) mo ved on the town from Juntusranta, while the southern column, consisting of 759th Rifle Regiment and the division's recon battalion, marched up the road from Raate.

[email protected]; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9462-9624 Abstract Chaoborus flavicans (Meigen) is a widespread and much studied lacustrine phantom midge. As larvae, these insects are important aquatic predators. Based on the available type material, morphology of immature stages and adults, their aquatic habitat, and DNA barcodes, C. flavicans is shown to be a composite of at least four species, with three of these named here. Chaoborus flavicans is primarily a lake-dwelling species with a Holarctic range. Chaoborus albipes (Johannsen, 1903 stat. rev.) and C. posio Salmela sp. n. are pond-dwelling Holarctic and north European species, respectively. The position of the larval subordinate mandibular tooth at the vertex of the second and fourth teeth is a synapomorphy of the Chaoborus flavicans species complex.

Jones Committee Member The Office of Graduate Studies has verified and approved the above named committee members. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First, I would like to express my gratitude to the members of my committee. These include my graduate professor, Dr. Jonathan Grant, for his advice during the writing of this work, his entertaining lectures, and especially for his patience; Dr. Michael Creswell, for introducing me to military affairs and for encouraging me to pursue this topic; and Dr. James P. Jones, for his continued interest in my academic progress, and for his fifty years of teaching at Florida State. The remaining members of the faculty and staff at FSU deserve recognition for too many reasons to be recounted here – but most of all for making my experience here so enjoyable. Rarely does someone in my circumstance receive the opportunity I have been given, and I will never forget the people who made it such a positive one.
