Roeber Professor of History Head of the History and Religious Studies Department *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT In 1537, the brutal murder of the heirless Duke Alessandro dei Medici brought the young and relatively inexperienced Cosimo dei Medici to the ducal chair of the most tumultuous city of the age: Renaissance Florence. This study examines how Cosimo used the politics of the sacred to legitimate monarchical rule in a city in which sacral monarchy had no historical precedent and few indigenous traditions. Utilizing a broad sweep of sources including government documents, letters, testaments, sermons, devotional literature, humanist tracts, diaries, art, and monastery records, the dissertation argues that Cosimo and his literati borrowed only the models of sacral monarchy that could be inscribed in local cultural and religious assumptions, the mundane axioms and organizing principles of thought with which Florentines and Tuscans made sense of their daily reality. In a sentence, Cosimo‟s grandiose political claims worked because they were only a special case of more generalized assumptions writ deeply into both the intellectual and quotidian experience of Florentine life. Indeed, if sociological considera- tions alone mattered, Cosimo I’s nasty personal relationship with Pope Paul III would have exploded into outright revolt, and the networks of heretical opinion circulating among the city’s cultured elite would have found fertile ground on Tuscan soil.1 However, sociology seems ill-suited to explain why Italy stayed Catholic since Italy had its cities, artisans, merchants, and nascent capitalism long before England, France, or Germany.

This dissertation seeks to challenge the argument that the cardinal virtues, as described by humanists like Leonardo Bruni and Matteo Palmieri, were models of behavior that only men adhered to. Elite men and women alike embraced the same civic ideals of prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. Although they were not feminists advocating for social changes, women like Alessandra Strozzi, Margherita Datini, and Lucrezia Tornabuoni had a great deal of opportunity to actively support their own interests and the interests of their kin within popular cultural models of civic virtue.

A medium commonly used in antiquity, terracotta fell out of favor until the Quattrocento, when central Italian artists became reacquainted with it. Terracotta was cheap and versatile, and sculptors discovered that it was useful for a range of purposes, including modeling larger works, making life casts, and molding. Reliefs of the half- length image of the Madonna and Child became a particularly popular theme in terracotta, suitable for domestic use or installation in small chapels. Donatello’s Louvre Madonna presents this theme in a variation unusual in both its form and its approach. In order to better understand the structure and the meaning of this work, I undertook to make some clay works similar to or suggestive of it.

    Shipton et al.: Humanism and Christianity: Shared Values? WARREN SHIPTON, YOUSSRY GUIRGUIS, AND NOLA TUDU Humanism and Christianity: Shared Values? Introduction The word humanism is derived from the Latin humanitas that originally meant the study of human nature. The idea was to elevate humanity with a focus on human dignity and potential through education (Ritchie and Spencer 2014:15, 16). The meaning attributed to the word humanism, in its broadest sense, allowed Christians and non-believers initially to oc- cupy common territory (64-78). In the early-middle Christian era, some thinkers sought to acquaint themselves with the achievements, literature, and thought of past civilizations, particularly Greek, with a view to rec- onciling theology with the philosophy of the classical philosophers (New World Encyclopedia n.d.; Odom 1977:126-128, 183-186). Outside Christian circles, elements supportive of the pre-eminence of human thought and abilities have long been seen among philosophers; however, not all forms of humanism were atheistic, as seen in Confucian thought (Gupta 2000:8- 12). There also are those who have been called “religious” or “spiritual” humanists (Eller 2010:10). The Medieval civilization that followed the collapse of the Roman Em- pire (AD 476) was marked by the rule of kings with nobles supporting the king in return for privileges. The majority of the population existed in serfdom; the Church reigned supreme. A change came in the 14th century helped by the fact that famine and disease created disaster. The abuses in the Church and the pessimism prevalent in society created a climate for change in Europe.

The Vatican is an independent nation, with its own national astronomical observatory, the Specola Vaticana (Vatican Observatory). As- tronomy has been supported at the Vatican since the 1582 reform of the calendar; the present-day Observatory has been in operation since 1891. The work of the observatory is divided between two sites, one in the pa- pal summer gardens south of Rome, Italy, and the other affiliated with the Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, Arizona, USA. Research undertaken by current staff members ranges from cosmol- ogy and the study of galactic evolution to meteoritics and meteors. Given the stable funding provided by the Vatican, the Observatory has specialized in long-term mapping and cataloguing projects that would be difficult to mount under a traditional three-year funding cycle.     INTRODUCTION – MANIFOLD READER RESPONSES: THE RECEPTION OF ERASMUS IN EARLY MODERN EUROPE Karl Enenkel Erasmus provides one of the most interesting cases not only for the pro- cesses of early modern image and reputation building through publishing in print,1 but at the same time – and certainly not to a lesser degree – for the impossibility of controlling one’s reception before an audience that was continually growing, was increasingly emancipated, heterogeneous, and fragmented, and was, above all, constantly changing. This loss of control is especially striking, since Erasmus had been so successful in building up his literary and scholarly fame by shrewdly utilizing both the hierarchical organization of early modern intellectual life and the means of the new medium of the printed book. From the second decade of the 16th century onward, Erasmus succeeded in gaining an immense, hitherto unrivalled fame spread over the whole of Latin-writing and Latin-loving Europe. Erasmus fought his crusade for fame by means of his Latin works – which he had printed at such important publishers as Josse Bade (Paris), Aldus Manutius (Venice), Johannes Froben (Basel), and Mathias Schürer (Strasbourg) – especially the Adagia; De duplici copia; his translation and paraphrases of and commentaries on the New Testament; his edition of Hieronymus, including a new Life of St. Jerome; the Ciceronianus; and the Laus Stultitiae. By their very appearance, all of these works caused seri- ous earthquakes in intellectual life with respect to philological criticism, authentic Latin style, and religious, ethical, and social criticism. Since Erasmus was so successful in spreading his fame all over Europe that almost all intellectuals of that era were, in some way or another, acquainted with his name (even if they did not have the opportunity to carefully study his works), one could be tempted to think that “Eras- mus” or “Erasmian” became a kind of intellectual trademark or brand.
