Written evidence submitted by Humanists UK (IRN0004) ABOUT HUMANISTS UK At Humanists UK, we want a tolerant world where rational thinking and kindness prevail. We work to support lasting change for a better society, championing ideas for the one life we have. Since 1896, our work has been helping people be happier and more fulfilled. By bringing non-religious people together we help them develop their own views and an understanding of the world around them. Together with our partners Humanist Society Scotland, we speak for 100,000 members and supporters and over 100 members of the All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group. Through our ceremonies, pastoral support, education services, and campaigning work, we advance free thinking and freedom of choice so everyone can live in a fair and equal society. We work closely with Humanists International, founded in 1952 as the global representative body of the humanist movement, with over 170 member organisations in over 70 countries, and of which our Chief Executive is also the current President. We are also a member of the European Humanist Federation (EHF). We have good relations with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), meeting regularly with ministers and officials. We are on the steering group of the UK Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) Forum and are an active member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on FoRB. We are accredited at the UN Human Rights Council – the only national humanist group to hold such accreditation – and make interventions there every session. We contribute annually to Humanists International’s Freedom of Thought Report1; and co-founded the End Blasphemy Laws campaign,2 which has successfully prompted ten countries to repeal their blasphemy laws since it was founded in 2015. -

1 Science, Religion, and a Revived Religious Humanism For over 150 years there has been a vital, and often contentious, dialogue between science and religion. In recent years, new energy and fresh public interest have been injected into this conversation. This largely has come about due to the new insights into religion and ethics achieved by collaboration between evolutionary psychology and cognitive and social neuroscience. What are the likely social consequences of this new interest in the relation of science and religion? There are at least three possible answers. One might be the new atheism exemplified by the writings of Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens.1 In this approach, the alleged defective thinking of the world religions is exposed, and a worldview and way of life based strictly on science are offered as replacement. A second option might be the return of a hegemonic dominance of religion over science. A third might be the emergence of a revitalized religious humanism of the kind that has happened on several occasions in the past in most of the great world religions. This last option is the one I will advocate. What would this religious humanism be like? The major world religions would remain visible and viable as religious movements. But the 13 contributions of science would help these religions refine their interests in improving the health, education, wealth, and overall well-being of their adherents and the general population. In addition, the sciences would help them refine their grasp of the empirical world, about which they, like humans in general, are constantly making judgments, predictions, and characterizations. -

Becoming a celebrant with Humanist Ceremonies™ Background Humanists UK is the UK’s principal charity representing people who hold no religious belief. For over a century, Humanists UK has provided ceremonies for people who are not religious but who wish to mark significant events in their lives. Humanist Ceremonies is Humanists UK’s organised network of trained and accredited celebrants in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. (The Humanist Society of Scotland is the equivalent organisation in Scotland.) Over time the number of people offering non-religious ceremonies has grown, in response to demand. More people recognise that religion is not for them and feel uncomfortable, even hypocritical having a religious ceremony. They recognise that life without religion does not mean a life without morality. They want a ceremony that is distinctive, personal and significant, specifically devised for them. Many individuals and organisations now offer non-religious ceremonies. However, a humanist ceremony is more than just an event with no religion. A humanist ceremony will reflect humanist principles, namely the value we place on humanity and reason, on our rights and responsibilities, on our individuality, on our personal histories and on our connections with others. In short, Humanist Ceremonies celebrate human lives in all their particularity and variety. Ceremonies Celebrants in the Humanist Ceremonies network can train to lead funerals, weddings or partnerships, and namings. Most Humanist Ceremonies celebrants are trained and accredited to do funerals. Our humanist funerals are the ceremonies most in demand as our reputation for highly personalised and meaningful ceremonies grows. However, requests for humanist weddings, partnerships and naming ceremonies are 1 rising. -

My name is Rafida Bonya Ahmed. I am a Bangladeshi-American author and blogger. I am a humanist and atheist. I am a mother to a recent John’s Hopkins graduate. I am a U.S. citizen and a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics Human Rights Centre. And I am here today to provide a much-needed voice for the nonreligious communities and individuals harmed by religious persecution. While I would not venture to represent the interests of all nonreligious people, I am a person who knows first-hand the violence accusations of blasphemy can incite. I appreciate that the committees are putting an overdue spotlight on the egregious violations of human rights conducted in the name of religion, and I urge both committees and Congress to pursue policies that hold bad actors to account. -

religions Article Catholics, Culture and the Renewal of Christian Humanism John Sullivan Theology Department, Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool L16 9JD, UK; [email protected] Abstract: If Catholic educators are to equip students to engage with contemporary culture in a way that is credible and winsome, they need first, to be able to draw upon the living tradition of their faith appreciatively, critically and creatively, and second, to articulate a renewed form of Christian humanism. This paper addresses the second of these prerequisites by taking two steps towards the development of a Christian humanism for our times. First, I propose a rationale for the task of rethinking the case for Christian humanism as a resource for both cultural engagement and for educational practice. Second, I consider three potential sources and guides for becoming confident and competent in communicating this renewal of Christian humanism: Jacques Maritain, Romano Guardini and Pope Francis. Responding to Relativism, Humanism, and Religious Pluralism in the Secular University Ed Christian Kutztown University of Pennsylvania The ideologies of relativism, humanism, and religious pluralism are basic to the intellectual mindset of both teachers and students on the secular university campus, even though many are unfamiliar with the words. The ideology of hu- manism goes back to the late 15th century, with the dawning of the Italian Ren- aissance, but many of its ideas, of course, are derived from the Greek philoso- phers. Relativism and religious pluralism have their roots in the work of Des- carte, Hume, Locke, and Mill, but they did not achieve the level of social para- digm, one might argue, until this generation, making them particularly Òlast dayÓ delusions. It is tempting to trace relativism, humanism, and religious pluralism back to the temptations in the Garden of Eden. ÒThou shalt not surely dieÓ offered Eve the ÒfreeÓ choice peculiar to relativismÑa range of choices, any of which might be right for the one who proclaims, ÒI have to do whatÕs right for me.Ó ÒYou shall be as godsÓ is the very heart of humanism, which proudly asserts that ÒMan is the measure of all things.Ó1 By offering Eve the option of disobedience disguised as her own wisdomÑas an acceptable and even preferable route to eternal blissÑthe serpent introduced a key tenet of religious pluralism. ÒYou shall be as gods, knowing good from evil,Ó is as well the same half-truth whis- pered by the Gnostics and by the various manifestations of New Age and nou- veau-mystical gurudom. -

GS 2197 GENERAL SYNOD The Church - An Advocate for Freedom of Religion or Belief Summary 1. The world is an increasingly hostile place for freedom of religion or belief (FoRB). In 2012 the Pew Forum reported that 83% of the global population lives in countries where the free practice of faith is restricted.1 Little has changed in the preceding years with Pew reporting in November 2020 that government restrictions on religion reached the highest level globally in more than a decade.2 2. This Report documents the Church’s response to this challenge from a public affairs (paras 9—19) and a programmatic perspective (paras 20—22). An important element of this work is the Freedom of Religion or Belief Leadership Network (FoRBLN): a 3-year project involving MPA which is funded (£5.6m) by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Another very significant recent development was the Independent Review commissioned by the then Foreign Secretary and Chaired by the Bishop of Truro, of which more is said below and in the Appendices to this paper. 3. The current paper goes on to suggest ways in which the Church’s work might develop in the future (paras 23—27) including amongst other things advocating for the full implementation of the Truro Report’s recommendations and collaborating with others in marking the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief (22 August) as well as UN Human Rights Day (10 December). 4. This paper is supported by a series of Appendixes: Appendix 1 - Provides an overview of what FoRB entails as a human right; Appendix 2 - Documents abuses and infringements to FoRB in recent years; Appendix 3 – Sets out future challenges facing the government’s FoRB strategy; Appendix 4 - Provides a copy of the Church’s submission to the Truro Review; Appendix 5 – Reproduces the Truro Report’s Final Recommendations. -
